Chapter 22 - Trying Not to Remember

Luna stood up and continued eating spaghetti with Matteo. As she ate, she found herself wondering how her husband ended up as a mafia boss. After finishing her meal, she went to the bedroom to rest, preparing herself for the next day.

Matteo finished eating shortly after and immediately went to bed. Meanwhile, Luna changed into her pajamas and joined him.

The following morning, their date day had finally arrived. As Luna woke up, she got out of bed and went to take a bath. Afterward, she put on a dress and did her makeup. Matteo was still fast asleep. She tapped his leg gently.

"It's time. Today is the day," she said.

Matteo, still half-asleep, groaned and turned to face her. "Already? It's morning?" he mumbled.

"Yes, it's morning," Luna replied.

"Just give me 30 more minutes," he said, his voice tired. "I really need a little more sleep. I'll use that time to regain my energy."

Luna sighed but smiled. "Okay, 30 minutes. That's all you're getting."

Since she was already dressed, she put on an apron and headed to the kitchen to make coffee for him. She realized she had forgotten to do it earlier. Once the coffee was ready, she brought it upstairs and placed it beside his bed. Then, she went back down to warm up some leftover spaghetti from the night before.

By the time she was done, only 15 minutes had passed. She returned to the bedroom and tried waking Matteo again.

"Wake up. Take your coffee," Luna said, nudging him.

Matteo groaned again, barely opening his eyes. "Has it been 30 minutes already?"

"The time already surpassed 30 minutes," Luna replied, exaggerating slightly. "Time is moving fast, and you're still sleeping."

"Just 10 more minutes," Matteo mumbled, rolling over.

Luna's patience ran out. "No! Stand up!" she snapped as she grabbed his arm and pulled him out of bed.

Matteo sighed in defeat, rubbing his face. "Alright, alright." He took the coffee she handed him and sipped it. The warmth and caffeine kicked in, shaking off his sleepiness.

"Sorry, I was slacking off," he admitted.

"You sure were," Luna teased.

Matteo stretched and said, "Let me go brush my teeth, then I'll join you for spaghetti."

He walked over to his wardrobe, grabbed his toothbrush and toothpaste, then headed to the bathroom.

After finishing brushing his teeth, Matteo returned to the bedroom and joined Luna, who was sitting on the bed. As he sat down, Luna brought the spaghetti from the table to the bed, and they both started eating slowly.

"It looks like I was the only one looking forward to today. You don't seem serious at all—you don't care about today," Luna said.

"I do care. It's just that I'm really exhausted from work," Matteo replied. "But don't worry, I'll make it up to you by buying you a gift."

Luna wondered why her husband was in the mafia. He was so kind and caring. Since yesterday, she had been trying to push those thoughts out of her mind, but they kept coming back.

"This spaghetti is really good. Bravo, bravo! It's the best—I could eat it all day," Matteo said.

"But you said you don't like spaghetti because you ate it too much when you were younger," Luna teased.

"Nah, I actually like spaghetti, but I don't love it that much. I prefer steak, and I haven't had steak in a while," Matteo replied.

After they finished eating, Matteo went back to the bedroom to take a bath. As he left, Luna watched him, but her mind kept going back to the things she had seen in his office—the pictures of dead bodies, the people he had killed, the gun in his office. She tried to shake the thoughts away so she could enjoy the day, but it seemed impossible. No matter how much she tried, they kept coming back.
