Chapter 29 - DW: The Mechanic Chapter 25

It does not take the TARDIS long to arrive. Once the landing is complete, I quickly detach Alice from the telepathic circuits before moving to the monitor to see where we are. What I see is some kind of grove that is vibrant with all kinds of fauna. There is no sign of being close to a city at all. After running a few scans, I find out that it's not actually in London; it's a separate space. I hate to say it, but I have never seen anything in Doctor Who that would be related to it. It's not another universe, just a grove. The only thing that I can say would be similar would be from anime, more specifically the Fate series.

It exists but is separate. The worst part is that, according to the scans, it's here because there is something or someone anchoring it here, similar to how Archer would call forth Unlimited Blade Works; he acts as the anchor. The issue is that I have no idea what this thing's purpose is. For all I know, it could be slowly integrating itself with our reality or just be a grove.

I look at Alice before speaking: "How long ago did you find this place?" I know most would not find it important, but if this place has a negative effect on those who enter, it's important that I know when she found this place.

"I think it was around my 6th birthday, so about 16 years ago I believe." Hearing her, I move over to the internal scanner, getting it to scan her. After a few minutes, I get the results, and believe me, I am surprised by the results. Her vitality is higher than normal. Not only that, it shares the same signature as the grove outside, which means this place is essentially giving her its own life force. But why?

After thinking for a bit, I decide it's time to see what this grove is all about. Walking to the door with Alice not far behind, I open the door and walk out. Once outside, I feel as if I am being watched. However, the moment Alice leaves the TARDIS, it disappears. As I can feel the flow of the life force flow into Alice, it's at that moment that I feel something else hidden in the vitality: emotions of worry—not just any kind of worry, the kind a mother has for her child.

Looking through the knowledge I have, I can't fathom how this is possible. Alice is human, unless... "Alice, you said you found this place when you were 6. Did anything else happen that year?" She looks at me before speaking, "My mother passed away. Oh, there was also a shooting star." I now realize what happened: a six-year-old misses her mother and wishes on a star. Most of the time it does nothing, but in rare cases a wish is granted in bizarre ways. Her wish trapped her mother's soul in a grove that exists despite the fact that her mother still takes care of her. Hearing my words, she looks around and realizes what I was implying.

"Is there a way to fix this?" Her words come out in a tearful burst as she realizes what she did. "Yes, the wish bound this place to you. All you need to do is let go. As for those who were following you, once this place disappears, they will not be able to find you." I can see she is conflicted, but not long after, I hear her mumble a goodbye. As she does, the grove begins to distort before it disappears completely. Once it's gone completely, I look around to see we are in an alleyway, not far from where I originally landed. Looking up, I see a ship that was not there earlier. So, that's how their camouflage tech works; it was using the energy from the separate space of reality to hide them. "What do we do now?" Hearing her, I smile before speaking. "Nothing; now that they are revealed, they will either be driven off or dealt with by the relevant department. For now, what about you? What do you want to do?" She looks at me confused before she speaks. "What do you mean? Wouldn't I just return to my ordinary life?".

I laugh before speaking, "Would you like to come with me in the TARDIS, travel through time and space, and explore a whole universe?" Hearing me, she freezes up for a moment before speaking, "Yes, I would. I have nothing left here, and I think my mother would want me to take this opportunity to see what's out there. She always loved looking up at the stars." I nod before we make our way to our next adventure.
