Chapter 39 - The lost world

I was near the door, listening to Cappelli ask his mother about the Lost World and the Virtuous World.

I remembered the day when Cappelli disappeared with the flying horse and the frog — they had departed to the Virtuous World.

We monsters are forbidden from approaching that place. If we ever enter it, we will be burned.

But I wanted to know what was going on there, so I took this opportunity to find out.

Cappelli: Mom, are you sick?

Mirta: Yes… I have been fighting this illness since the departure of the warrior — your father. My life has changed. I cannot taste food anymore. I haven't walked in the village for a long time. I haven't seen anyone except my brother Colin. He visited me for a while.

Cappelli: My uncle Colin is at my house. He is with Sula. Please, mother, come with me.

Mirta: I can't walk, my son… don't worry about me. Go to your wife — she needs you.

Cappelli: Mom, I will bring her here to live with you… and with my child.

Before leaving, I want to ask you about the Lost World and the Virtuous World you once visited.

Mother… that world is so beautiful. Its air is pure, the colors of the flowers and roses are bright. The plants are tall and short, and you can even speak to them. There are no monsters there. I wish you had been with me. My father spoke to me, and the king advised me to hold on to my keys and never lose them.

Mirta (crying): One day, your father lost his key… I fear you will face the same fate, my son. Take this advice:

Sula is your key. Your child is your key. And your money is your key.

As for the Lost World… it is the world that lost its keys one day, and monsters took control of it. Monsters disappear… and then awaken again. Love and compassion were stripped away from its people, and hatred, bitterness, and revenge spread among them — even though they were of the same race.

Cappelli: Do we still live in it?

Mirta: As long as monsters are among us, yes. You and I disagreed over that cat — you say she's a cat, and I say she's a monster.

Monster Jamis: Hey, cat… did you stay at home?

Monster Cat: After I revealed my story to that old woman, I disappeared and went to Sula's hut before Cappelli said goodbye to his mother.

Monster Jamis: That Virtuous World… I hope to enter it one day, even if I get burned.

Monster Cat: Impossible.

Cappelli said goodbye to his mother:

"Mom, take care of yourself… I will be back soon."
