Chapter 26 - Fractures and Choices

The city outside hadn't slept. Neon signs flickered. Headlines scrolled endlessly on financial tickers. Social media burned with speculation. But in the penthouse, the world had shrunk to just two people.

Jenny pressed her forehead against Ryan's chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It was grounding. Dangerous in its simplicity. For a moment, she almost forgot about the leak. Almost.

Ryan shifted slightly, enough for her to look up. His eyes were soft now, but alert. Always alert. "You can't stay frozen like this," he said quietly. "If you keep bracing for impact, you'll never be present."

She swallowed. "Being present… feels risky."

"Everything feels risky. That's life in this world," he countered. "But hiding behind fear doesn't protect you. It isolates you."

Her fingers traced the edge of his tie, absently. "I've been isolated for years. It's… easier."

"Easier?" He chuckled softly, but without humor. "Easier is letting them dictate your life. Easier is letting the world win before the first battle begins."

She flinched. The truth hit harder than she wanted. She had built walls for herself. Fortresses that even Ryan hadn't breached—until tonight.

"I… don't know how to stop," she admitted, voice trembling. "Stop expecting betrayal. Stop preparing for loss."

He cupped her face, his thumb brushing a tear she hadn't wiped yet. "Then start small. Trust me with the little things first. Let me in. Let me handle the world sometimes, so you don't have to do it all alone."

Jenny blinked, a mixture of fear and longing. "And what if I fail? What if letting you in costs me everything?"

"That's the thing," he murmured, leaning closer. "It won't. Not if we face it together. You taught me how to fight… now I'll teach you how to rely."

The air between them hummed with fragile understanding. Outside, a new notification pinged—another leak, another smear campaign—but inside, the tension had shifted. Not gone. Not resolved. But manageable.

Jenny drew in a shaky breath. "Ryan… if we do this—if I stop bracing—"

"You mean if you start believing in us?" he finished for her.

Her lips twitched into a faint, hesitant smile. "Yes."

He pressed a kiss to her temple. "Then start believing. I'm not leaving. And I'm not letting the world decide what we are. Not tonight. Not ever."

She closed her eyes against the city lights, against the leaks, against the fear that had ruled her life. For the first time, she allowed herself to lean. Not a fortress. Not armor. Just her.

Ryan held her like he would never let go. And in that moment, the penthouse, the leaks, the world—they all felt secondary.

Outside, the war continued. Inside, something new had begun.

The question now wasn't survival. It was trust. And for Jenny, that was a battle she was finally willing to fight.
