Chapter 28 - The Enemy Within

The morning sunlight did little to warm the penthouse. The leaks had gone global overnight. Headlines screamed accusations. Social media was alive with speculation. Investors were calling. Competitors were circling like sharks.

Ryan stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, phone pressed to his ear. "Yes, I want the IP traced back fully. Whoever did this… I want names."

Jenny sat at the large desk, laptop open, but her mind wasn't on emails or analytics. It was on the subtle shift she had felt the night before—the crack of vulnerability, the trust slowly forming.

A ping interrupted her thoughts. An encrypted message appeared on her screen:

"We know who leaked the audio. Internal. Meeting at 2 PM."

Her heart skipped. Internal. Someone on the team. Someone she had trusted.

Ryan noticed her reaction. "What is it?"

Jenny's fingers hovered over the keyboard. "We've traced the leak. Internal. Someone planted the clip and pushed it out to the media. We know where they'll be at 2 PM."

Ryan's jaw tightened. "Then we confront them. No half measures."

Jenny nodded. "Agreed. But it has to be surgical. This isn't just about stopping the leaks—it's about sending a message. The wrong move, and the board will panic."

At 2 PM sharp, the conference room of their corporate building was tense. Jenny and Ryan entered together. The culprit waited inside—a senior manager she had considered reliable.

"Ms. Jenny, Mr. Ryan," the manager said, voice careful. "I—"

Jenny cut him off, calm but icy. "You know exactly why you're here. Explain yourself."

The manager swallowed. "It… it was supposed to be a warning. I didn't mean—"

"Meaning?" Jenny's eyes narrowed. "You jeopardized the company. You jeopardized our reputation. You leaked confidential strategy to the media for a 'warning.' To whom?"

The manager hesitated. "To… competitors. They offered… incentives."

Ryan stepped forward, cold and controlled. "And you thought risking the company and all of us was worth a payout?"

"I… I thought it would force change!"

Jenny's composure was absolute, but her voice carried ice. "Change? By destroying trust? By betraying everyone who worked to build this company?"

Ryan's hand brushed her back, a subtle anchor. Then he turned to the manager. "You'll resign. Effective immediately. And you'll cooperate fully with the investigation. Any attempt to interfere further, and it won't be just your career at risk."

The manager nodded, pale. "Yes… yes, of course."

Jenny's eyes softened ever so slightly. "I don't want excuses. I want accountability. This company survives because we protect it. Not because of fear, not because of manipulation, but because of integrity. Something you forgot."

The manager lowered his head. Silence hung over the room.

Outside, the world continued its chaos. Leaks would still circulate, but now the source was neutralized. The first step toward control had been taken.

Ryan leaned close to Jenny as they exited the room. "You handled that perfectly."

She exhaled, tension leaving her shoulders. "It wasn't perfect. But it was necessary."

He smiled faintly. "We rebuild. Step by step. Together."

She glanced at him, and for the first time in days, the city below didn't feel like an enemy. It was a battlefield—but now, they had each other as an ally, not just in business, but in trust.

And for Jenny, that was a victory no headline could touch.
