Chapter 10 - Chapter Ten: The Distance That Appears

For a few days after their first kiss, everything felt light.

Lila found herself smiling more. Laughing more. Sleeping peacefully.

And Adrian… Adrian was gentler than ever.

He didn't rush her. Didn't demand time. Didn't overwhelm her with messages.

But every morning, there was always one simple text:

"Good morning, Lila."

And somehow, that was enough to make her day feel warmer.

One afternoon, they were working together when Adrian's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen, and for the first time since she had known him… his expression changed.

Not panic.

Not fear.

Just seriousness.

"I need to take this," he said quietly, stepping outside.

Lila continued working, but something in her chest felt unsettled.

When he returned, he looked thoughtful… distant in a way she hadn't seen before.

"Everything okay?" she asked.

He hesitated.

"Yes," he said.

But it wasn't a convincing yes.

And she noticed.

Over the next few days, things felt… different.

Not cold. Not unfriendly.

But slightly distant.

He still called. Still worked with her. Still smiled.

But sometimes, she caught him staring into space, lost in thought.

And every time she asked if he was alright, he gave the same answer:

"I'm fine."

Lila didn't push.

She understood that people sometimes needed space.

But a quiet worry began to grow inside her.

One evening, after finishing work, Adrian said:

"I may need to travel for a while."

Her heart sank slightly.

"For how long?"

"I'm not sure yet. Maybe a few weeks."

A few weeks.

It sounded small, but it felt large.

"Oh," she said softly.

He looked at her carefully, as if searching her face for something.

"I didn't want to tell you until I was sure."

"Is it work?" she asked.

"Yes… and family matters."

She nodded slowly.

"I understand."

And she meant it.

But understanding doesn't always make things easier.

That night, Lila lay awake, staring at the ceiling again.

Not smiling this time.

Just thinking.

Why did distance always seem to appear just when something beautiful began?

Why did life always test things before they had time to grow strong?

She told herself not to overthink.

But her heart felt heavier than it had in weeks.

The day Adrian was leaving, he came to see her before heading to the airport.

They stood outside her building, the evening sky quiet and pale.

"I'll call," he said softly.

"I know," she replied.

There was a pause.

Then she asked quietly, "Are you sure everything is okay?"

He looked at her… and for a moment, she thought he would finally tell her everything.

But instead, he simply said:

"I'll explain when I come back."

That answer didn't satisfy her.

But she nodded anyway.

He reached for her hand and held it gently.

"I don't want you to think this changes anything," he said.

She looked at him.

"Does it?" she asked softly.

His grip tightened slightly.

"No."

And she believed him.

But a small part of her… the part that had been hurt before… whispered:

People don't always mean to change things. Sometimes life changes them anyway.

Before leaving, he leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

Not lips this time.

Forehead.

A kiss that felt like a promise.

And then he was gone.

That night, the rain returned.

Soft. Steady. Lonely.

Lila stood by her window, watching it fall, and for the first time since meeting Adrian…

She felt alone again.

Not completely alone.

But aware of the space he had left behind.

And she realized something important:

It's easy to feel love when someone is beside you.

The real test… is what happens when they are far away.
