Chapter 16 - Chapter Sixteen:The Waiting

Lila stood behind the curtain, her fingers gripping the fabric tightly.

She could see him.

Still standing in the rain.

Still looking up.

Still waiting.

And something in her chest ached-not with longing this time, but with the weight of everything that had happened.

Love was there.

But so was the wound.

Her phone buzzed again.

A message.

"I'll wait."

Just that.

No pressure.

No pleading.

Just waiting.

Minutes passed.

The rain softened, turning into a steady whisper against the streets.

Adrian didn't move.

Water dripped from his hair onto his collar. His hands were cold, but he kept them in his pockets, as if moving might break whatever fragile chance still existed.

For the first time in his life, he understood what it meant to feel powerless in love.

Not because someone rejected you.

But because someone you hurt was deciding whether to trust you again.

And that decision... could not be rushed.

Upstairs, Lila sat on the edge of her bed.

Her heart kept pulling her toward the door.

But her mind kept whispering:

"He hesitated once."

That memory hurt more than anything.

Not that he loved someone before.

Not that life was complicated.

But that when it mattered most...

He had paused.

And love, real love, should not feel like an option.

She walked to the mirror.

Her eyes were still slightly red, but calm.

Quiet.

Strong.

"I love him," she whispered to her reflection.

The words were true.

And that was the hardest part.

Because loving someone didn't mean forgetting how they made you feel.

Downstairs, Adrian sat on the low concrete step near the entrance.

His shoulders were heavy.

Not from exhaustion.

From realization.

He thought about every moment he had been careful with her heart... and the one moment he wasn't.

Sometimes, one moment is enough to shake everything.

He looked up again.

Her window was dark now.

And for a brief second, fear gripped him.

Maybe she wasn't coming.

Maybe this was the consequence.

Maybe love doesn't always give second chances.

Upstairs, Lila put on a sweater.

Not to go downstairs.

Just to walk.

To think.

To breathe.

She paced slowly across the room, her arms wrapped around herself.

And then she realized something.

She wasn't afraid of him hurting her again.

She was afraid of loving someone deeply... and losing herself in the process.

That fear was bigger than the heartbreak.

She stopped walking.

Closed her eyes.

And asked herself one simple question:

"Do I believe he loves me?"

The answer came quietly.

Yes.

But love alone was not enough.

Love needed courage.

Consistency.

Choice.

Every day.

Downstairs, Adrian leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

"I should have chosen you sooner," he whispered into the empty night.

His voice cracked slightly.

And for a man who rarely showed weakness...

That crack meant everything.

An hour passed.

The rain stopped.

The street grew quiet.

A stray dog crossed the road, shaking water from its fur.

A taxi drove by slowly.

The world moved on.

But Adrian stayed.

Upstairs, Lila finally walked to the window again.

He was still there.

Still waiting.

And something shifted inside her.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But respect.

Because waiting in the rain wasn't romantic.

It was uncomfortable.

Cold.

Humbling.

And he stayed anyway.

She picked up her phone.

Typed.

Deleted.

Typed again.

Then finally sent:

"I see you."

Adrian's phone vibrated in his hand.

He looked at the screen.

And his chest tightened-not with relief, but with emotion so strong it almost hurt.

She hadn't come down.

She hadn't forgiven him.

But she hadn't closed the door either.

And sometimes...

That is the beginning of hope.
