Chapter 14 - Chapter Fourteen: The Sentence That Broke Her

The silence on the phone stretched longer than it should have.

Lila could hear his breathing.

Slow. Uneven.

Not confused.

Thinking.

And that was enough to make her chest tighten.

"Adrian," she said softly, "is she your fiancée?"

Another pause.

Then finally-

"Yes."

The word didn't come out strong.

It came out low.

Heavy.

Almost ashamed.

But it came out.

And that was enough.

For a second, Lila didn't feel anything.

Not anger. Not sadness.

Just... stillness.

Like her body hadn't caught up with the meaning yet.

"You told me you were engaged once," she said quietly.

"I was," he replied.

"You said she left."

"She did."

Her throat tightened.

"So who is this?"

He exhaled slowly.

"She came back."

The world felt like it tilted slightly.

"She came back?" Lila repeated.

"Yes."

"When?"

"A few weeks ago."

A few weeks ago.

Her mind calculated.

That was around the time...

He started getting distant.

"You didn't tell me," she whispered.

"I didn't know how."

"You didn't know how?" Her voice trembled now. "So instead you kissed me?"

Silence.

And that silence was louder than any apology.

"It wasn't planned," he said finally.

"I didn't expect her to return. I didn't expect old feelings to-"

"Old feelings?" she cut in.

Her chest burned now.

So this wasn't confusion.

It wasn't obligation.

It was feelings.

"You told me you were choosing me," she said, her voice breaking despite her effort to stay steady.

"I meant it."

"But you were already speaking to her again, weren't you?"

He didn't answer.

And that was the answer.

Her eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall yet.

"So what am I?" she asked softly.

The question wasn't loud.

It wasn't angry.

It was small.

And that made it devastating.

"You're not nothing," he said quickly.

"I didn't say nothing," she replied. "I asked what I am."

Another silence.

And this time...

He said the sentence that shattered her.

"I needed time to figure out who I still loved."

It felt like something inside her chest cracked open.

Not loudly.

Just... completely.

Time.

He needed time.

While holding her hand. While kissing her. While telling her he was choosing her.

He needed time.

"So I was an option," she said.

"No-"

"Yes," she whispered.

And now the tears fell.

Not dramatic sobbing.

Just quiet, steady tears.

"You don't choose someone while testing your heart against another," she said softly.

Her voice wasn't angry anymore.

It was disappointed.

Deeply.

"I never meant to hurt you," he said.

And that sentence...

That useless, empty sentence...

Made her finally laugh through her tears.

"Intent doesn't erase impact," she replied.

Silence again.

But this silence was different.

This silence felt like goodbye.

"I cared about you," he said.

"I know," she whispered.

"And that's what makes it worse."

Because if he hadn't cared, it would have been easier.

But he did care.

Just not enough to choose her without hesitation.

"I hope you find clarity," she said softly.

And before he could respond...

She ended the call.

The room felt too quiet.

Too still.

She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the wall.

The rain began again outside.

Of course it did.

It always rained when something changed.

She touched her lips gently.

Remembering that first kiss.

And this time, it didn't feel warm.

It felt fragile.

Like something beautiful that had been built on unfinished ground.

Across the city, Adrian sat with his phone in his hand.

The call ended.

The silence loud.

And for the first time...

He realized something too late.

Choosing slowly can sometimes mean losing completely.

Meanwhile, Lila wiped her tears and stood up.

Her heart hurt.

Deeply.

But something else was there too.

Clarity.

She had not lost herself.

She had loved honestly.

And even if it ended painfully...

She had not been weak.

She had simply been open.
