At what seemed like the crack of dawn, Roman kissed my cheek as I slept in bed.
"It's early," I moaned.
"I want to beat the heat," he said.
"But it's Hawaii. It doesn't get real hot."
"Says the person who's never been here. Come on, sleepy-head. I packed us some snacks and a water." He showed me a backpack. "Plus, there are fewer people if we get there early."
"You mean there aren't enough private waterfalls to go around?" I asked.
"No," he laughed. "But I'll find us one," he winked.
I got dressed and met Roman downstairs. He handed me a cup of coffee, then started to write a note to the others.
"A note? What, are we in 1990?" I asked.
He gave me a sardonic look. "I don't plan on having a great signal out there. In fact, it's just going to be you and me, so we can just turn off our phones anyway."
"Well, you could have just texted them that much." Again, he threw me a cutting glance.
"I'm setting a precedent."
I loved ribbing Roman. He was almost always a good sport.
