The guy I had seen before pass by on the other boat was hanging on the side.
He seemed menacing, panting a little as if he hadn't had a drink in days.
Another guy walked across the deck behind him.
The boat started to idle, slowly drifting toward us in the waves. I had no idea how many people were on the boat or what they wanted, but it looked like they were coming our way.
"Hey," said the man who had made the gesture as if cutting off his neck. He did it again, raising his hand to his neck, and the person driving their boat cut the engine.
Oh! How stupid I felt.
That was the symbol to turn off the boat - not a threat to kill me.
"Hey," he yelled our way again. "We kind of got lost out here. Our boat captain's not the best," he made a face toward the man up front, sitting in front of the wheel. "We're getting close to running out of gas. Have any we can buy off you?"
"I think so," Martin said. "Let me check." He rushed away, looking for the gas.
