By my count, Jessica only had three bullets left in the gun, which I believed to have a six-bullet chamber. It was something that might prove important later on.
Miguel not only carried around a gun - which obviously had been taken, probably when Jessica stabbed him with a narcotic - but he also usually held a knife in his boot. With Miguel's feet and hands bound, I could see how the knife would be hard to access.
I caught his eye and then lowered my gaze to his boot as if asking about the knife.
He gave a little nod.
Geoffrey, Miguel and I were back in our chairs, this time lined up close to the window, as Jessica watched us, her gun drawn.
Getting the knife was one thing; using it to cut off the ties was another. It would take a major distraction in order to get Jessica to look the other way while Miguel or I was able to use the knife.
"How dare you," Jessica said, "You were using my free-spirited ways against me."
She turned the music off on her phone.
