Chapter 4 - 4

The forest didn't feel as empty anymore.

Not because it had changed—

But because Aarav was no longer alone.

Three footsteps now echoed where there had once been one.

Three breaths broke the silence.

Three shadows moved between the trees.

And yet—

The unease remained.

Aarav walked slightly behind Meera and Rohan, still trying to process everything that had happened.

A glowing map.

A near-death encounter.

Two strangers who somehow knew more than they were saying.

"Alright," Aarav said, his voice cutting through the silence, "I think it's time I got some explanations."

Rohan looked back over his shoulder, a grin spreading across his face. "You know, the usual question - what's all this about and how did I get dragged into it?"

Aarav crossed his arms. " Exactly that one."

Meera didn't slow down.

"If you want answers," she said, "keep walking."

Aarav frowned. " That's not really helpful."

"It's the truth," she replied.

Rohan moved in a bit closer to Aarav and spoke in a softer tone.

"She does this," he said. " Mysterious. Serious. Very dramatic."

"I can hear you," Meera said without turning.

Rohan smiled. " Of course you can."

Aarav couldn't help but feel a little more at ease, even though he didn't want to.

But it didn't last.

The forest shifted.

A sudden gust of wind passed through the trees, stronger than before, carrying with it a low, distant sound.

Not quite a roar.

Not quite a whisper.

Something in between.

Meera stopped instantly.

Rohan collided with her, and she said, "Oh, okay, I guess we're stopping now."

Aarav felt it too.

That same feeling from before.

They were being watched.

"Stay close," Meera said quietly.

Her tone had changed.

Gone was the calm control.

Now—

There was tension.

"What is it?" Aarav asked.

Meera didn't answer immediately.

She was listening.

Watching.

Then—

"…We're not alone."

Rohan forced a laugh. " That's becoming a theme I don't enjoy."

The air grew colder.

A branch snapped somewhere behind them.

Aarav turned quickly—

But saw nothing.

"Okay, I officially don't like this," he muttered.

"Too late for that," Rohan replied.

The ground beneath them shifted suddenly.

Crack.

Before Aarav could react—

The earth gave way.

"Watch out!"

The ground gave way and all three of them fell, their feet slipping out from under them as the earth collapsed.

Aarav hit the ground hard, the impact knocking the air from his lungs.

Dust filled the air.

Darkness closed in.

For a moment—

There was nothing but silence.

"…Everyone okay?" Rohan's voice echoed weakly.

Aarav coughed. " Yeah… I think so."

Meera stood first, already alert.

"We fell into a trap," she said.

Aarav looked around.

They were in a pit.

Deep.

Steep walls.

No easy way out.

"Perfect," he muttered.

Rohan brushed dirt off his clothes. " I'm starting to think this journey has some design flaws."

Meera ignored him.

Her focus was on the walls.

"They want to slow us down," she said.

Aarav frowned. " Who is 'they'?"

Meera hesitated.

Just for a moment.

Then—

"You'll find out soon enough."

Aarav sighed. " That's not comforting."

He glanced up, his eyes fixed on the edge of the pit.

Far above them.

"…So how do we get out?"

Rohan's eyes lit up slightly.

"About time," he muttered, a hint of excitement in his voice, "a problem that's actually solvable."

He let his bag fall to the ground and unzipped it, showing off a bunch of weird gadgets inside - like gears, wires, and tiny machine parts.

Aarav's eyes widened slightly as he asked, "You really lug all that stuff around with you?"

Rohan said with a smile, "It's all about preparation, and to be honest, I get bored pretty easily too."

Meera crossed her arms. " Make it quick."

Rohan nodded, already working.

Aarav watched him, curiosity taking over.

"…What are you building?"

"A solution," Rohan replied.

He quickly put together a small gadget, kind of like a hook that could grab things, and it was powered by a spring that was wound up tight.

Aarav blinked. "… You made that just now?"

Rohan grinned. " Impressed?"

"…A little," Aarav admitted.

Rohan aimed the device upward.

"Stand back."

He fired.

The hook suddenly shot upward, catching hold of the edge above them.

Rohan tugged it.

Secure.

"See?" he said. " Easy."

Meera didn't waste any time, she quickly grabbed the rope and started climbing right away.

Aarav followed.

Halfway up—

The rope shifted.

Aarav froze.

"…Uh—Rohan?"

"Don't worry!" Rohan called. " It's stable!"

The rope creaked.

"…That didn't sound confident."

"Okay, maybe slightly worry," Rohan admitted.

Aarav climbed faster.

Just as he reached the top—

The rope snapped.

He just about managed to haul himself up and over the edge.

Rohan, still below, stared up.

"…Well, that's unfortunate."

Aarav reached down immediately. " Grab my hand!"

Rohan hesitated for a split second.

Then jumped—

Aarav caught his wrist.

Strain shot through his arm.

"Pull!" Meera said, grabbing Rohan's other arm.

Together—

They pulled him up.

Rohan collapsed onto the ground, breathing heavily.

"Alright," he said, "the next one will be even better."

Aarav laughed despite himself.

"You think?"

For a moment—

They just lay there.

Breathing.

Alive.

Then—

Meera sat up.

Her expression serious again.

"That wasn't random," she said.

Aarav pushed himself up. " What do you mean?"

She looked at him.

Directly.

"They know we're here."

Silence fell.

Rohan sat up slowly.

"…Who is 'they'?" he asked again.

Meera's gaze hardened.

"Someone who wants that map," she said.

Aarav's grip tightened around it instinctively.

"And trust me," she added quietly—

"They won't stop until they get it."

A cold realization settled over them.

This wasn't just a journey anymore.

It was a chase.

And somewhere—

Not far away—

Someone was already planning their next move.

The forest grew silent again.

But this time—

It didn't feel like peace.

It felt like the calm before something much worse.
