Chapter 5 - 5

The forest changed.

Not suddenly.

Not loudly.

It was enough, though, that all three of them could feel it.

It began with the light.

The soft light that was coming through the trees started to fade away, like something up above was trying to block out the sun.

Shadows stretched longer.

Darker.

Thicker.

Aarav noticed it first.

"Is it just me, or does it feel colder in here?" he whispered.

Rohan rubbed his arms, a look of discomfort on his face. "Yes, I'm definitely going to make a formal complaint about this," he said, his voice firm.

Meera didn't respond.

She had stopped walking.

That alone was enough to silence the others.

"What is it?" Aarav asked.

Meera's eyes scanned the area carefully.

"The forest ahead…" she said slowly, "…is different."

Rohan blinked. " Different how? Because so far everything has tried to kill us, so I'd like specifics."

Meera took a step forward.

Carefully.

"This is where it begins," she said.

Aarav frowned. " Where what begins?"

She looked back at him.

There's a place deep in the forest where people venture in, but never return.

Silence.

Rohan managed a faint smile. "That's just great," he said, his voice laced with sarcasm. "Exactly what we needed."

Aarav swallowed.

The map in his hand pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

It was pointing straight ahead.

Of course it was.

"…We don't have a choice, do we?" Aarav said.

Meera shook her head slightly.

"No."

For a moment—

No one moved.

Then Aarav stepped forward.

"He looked at us and said, 'We've made it this far, so let's just keep moving forward.'"

Rohan sighed dramatically. " I miss the part of my life where I made safer decisions."

Meera didn't argue.

And just like that—

They crossed the invisible line.

The Forbidden Forest.

The air shifted instantly.

It wasn't just colder now.

It felt… heavier.

Every breath took effort.

Every sound felt muted.

The earth beneath them felt almost spongy, like it was soaking up their footsteps, making their presence seem quieter, less intrusive.

Aarav tightened his grip on the map.

"…Stay close," he said.

Meera gave a small nod.

Rohan stayed very close.

Too close.

"Personal space," Aarav muttered.

"Survival first," Rohan replied quickly.

They moved deeper.

The trees here were different.

Taller.

Twisted.

Their bark darker, almost black, with faint glowing patterns running through them like veins of dim green light.

Aarav slowed slightly.

"…Do trees normally glow?"

"No," Meera said.

Rohan leaned in, his voice barely above a whisper. "This is fascinating, possibly even magical, but one thing's for sure - it's not safe."

"Don't touch anything," Meera warned.

Rohan immediately pulled his hand back.

"…Noted."

A faint sound echoed in the distance.

Soft.

Melodic.

Almost like… singing.

Aarav froze.

"Do you hear that?"

Rohan nodded slowly, his expression thoughtful. "Yes, and I have to admit, it does sound nice," he said, his voice measured, as if he was considering the idea carefully.

Meera's expression darkened.

"Don't follow it," she said immediately.

Aarav frowned. " Why not?"

"Because that's how it finds you."

A chill ran down his spine.

The sound grew louder.

Clearer.

It was beautiful.

Too beautiful.

"…What is it?" Aarav asked.

Meera didn't take her eyes off the trees.

"…A lure."

Rohan swallowed. " Of course it is."

The sound shifted.

Now it wasn't just distant.

It was moving.

Circling them.

Aarav's heart pounded.

"Stay together," Meera said.

They tightened their formation.

Then—

The forest moved.

Not the wind.

Not the leaves.

The forest itself.

Branches twisted.

Shadows stretched.

And from between the trees—

Shapes emerged.

Thin.

Tall.

Almost human.

But not quite.

Their forms flickered, like shadows struggling to hold shape. Their eyes glowed faintly, reflecting the same unnatural green as the trees.

Rohan's voice dropped to a whisper.

"…I don't like this."

"Don't look directly at them," Meera said.

Aarav tried.

But it was impossible not to.

They moved unnaturally.

Gliding instead of walking.

Watching.

Always watching.

The singing stopped.

Silence fell.

And that was worse.

One of the figures stepped closer.

Aarav felt something pull at his mind.

A memory.

A voice.

His own thoughts—being twisted.

"You don't belong here…"

Aarav stiffened.

"…Go back…"

The voice wasn't real.

But it felt real.

He shook his head.

"No."

The figure tilted its head.

Another step closer.

"…You're afraid…"

Aarav clenched his fists.

"I'm not," he said.

But his voice wavered.

Meera stepped in front of him instantly.

"Don't listen to it," she said firmly.

The figure recoiled slightly.

Rohan quickly pulled something from his bag.

A small device.

"What are you doing?" Aarav asked.

"Improvising," Rohan replied.

He activated it.

A burst of bright light flashed outward.

The figures shrieked—

A sharp, unnatural sound—

And retreated instantly into the shadows.

Gone.

Just like that.

The forest fell silent again.

Aarav exhaled sharply.

"…What were those?"

Meera didn't relax.

"Not creatures," she said.

Rohan blinked. " That's not comforting."

"They're a part of the forest," she went on. "Things like illusions, fear, and memory."

Aarav looked around.

"…They felt real."

"They are," she said quietly.

Silence settled again.

But something had changed.

Aarav wasn't just scared now.

He understood.

This forest didn't just attack the body.

It attacked the mind.

"…We need to move," Meera said.

They didn't argue.

Step by step—

They pushed forward.

Deeper.

The map glowed brighter now.

The path was close.

Very close.

And yet—

The forest felt like it was tightening around them.

Watching.

Testing.

Waiting.

Aarav looked ahead.

"…We're not alone in this," he said quietly.

Meera nodded.

"I know."

Rohan adjusted his bag nervously.

"…I really hope whatever comes next is less terrifying."

A distant sound echoed.

Deep.

Powerful.

Not like the others.

Something bigger.

Something real.

Aarav felt it in his chest.

The next challenge.

Was waiting.
