Chapter 1 - Sent Back

Kofi Mensah stood by the roadside, watching the car disappear.

The engine sound faded first.

Then the dust slowly settled.

And just like that… he was alone.

He adjusted the strap of the small bag hanging on his shoulder. It was light, almost empty. Everything he had tried to build in Accra had been reduced to this one bag.

That was all he had left.

Asempa.

The village stood quietly ahead of him.

Nothing had changed.

The same narrow dusty road.

The same old houses.

The same slow rhythm of life.

But for Kofi… everything had changed.

He took a step forward.

Then another.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

Not because of the distance.

But because of what it meant.

He wasn't coming back as someone who succeeded.

He was coming back as someone who failed.

A group of women stood by the roadside, talking. Their voices lowered slightly as he passed.

One of them looked at him closely.

"Kofi… is that you?"

He forced a small smile.

"Yes, it's me."

"You're back?" she asked.

There was something in her tone. Not surprise. Not happiness.

Just curiosity.

Kofi nodded.

"I'm back."

No explanation.

No story.

Just those two words.

Because even he didn't know where to begin.

As he walked deeper into the village, memories started coming back.

Running barefoot as a child.

Laughing with friends.

Dreaming about leaving one day and becoming something bigger.

Back then, the village had felt too small for him.

Now…

It felt like the only place that would take him back.

When he reached his family house, he stopped at the entrance.

The door was slightly open.

Voices came from inside.

For a moment, he just stood there.

Thinking.

What am I going to say?

There was no good answer.

No explanation that would make sense.

No excuse that would sound strong enough.

Just the truth.

And the truth was simple.

He had messed up.

He pushed the door open slowly.

The room went quiet.

His mother looked up first.

Their eyes met.

She didn't look shocked.

She didn't look angry.

She just looked at him… like she already knew.

"Kofi," she said softly.

He nodded.

"I'm back."

No one asked questions immediately.

And that silence…

was worse than anything.

He dropped his bag by the wall and sat down quietly.

His younger siblings stared at him.

His older brother leaned back slightly, studying him.

"You left to make something of yourself," his brother finally said.

Kofi didn't respond.

"What happened?"

The question hung in the air.

Heavy.

Direct.

Unavoidable.

Kofi looked down at his hands.

"I tried," he said.

"That's not what I asked."

The tone was sharper now.

Kofi swallowed.

"It didn't work out."

His brother sighed.

"That city is not for everyone," he said. "Some people go there and succeed. Others…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

That night, Kofi lay on a thin mattress, staring at the ceiling.

Sleep didn't come.

His mind was too loud.

Accra.

The noise.

The pressure.

The mistakes.

He replayed everything.

Every wrong decision.

Every missed opportunity.

Every moment he should have done better… but didn't.

He turned to his side.

Maybe this is it, he thought.

Maybe this is where everything ends.

No more big dreams.

No more chasing something bigger.

Just…

life in the village.

Simple.

Quiet.

Safe.

But something didn't sit right.

That feeling in his chest.

That small voice in his head.

It refused to be silent.

Is this really how your story ends?

Kofi closed his eyes tightly.

He didn't have the answer.

Not yet.

Outside, the night was calm.

The village slept peacefully.

But inside him…

a storm was just beginning.
