Chapter 5 - Chapter 4 The New Master

Chapter 4 The New Master

The atmosphere inside the massive dome, usually buzzing with the roar of machinery, fell into a sudden silence as hundreds of workers gathered under Sia Son's command. Arthit stood prominently beside his father, his tall frame and air of an overseas businessman so imposing that no one dared to meet his gaze.

"Listen up, everyone!" Sia Son announced, his voice filled with pride.

"From today onward, Khun Arthit, my only son, will be taking full charge here. If you have any problems, or if anything happens at the warehouse, report to Khun Arthit immediately. His word is my word!"

Murmurs rippled through the crowd as workers scrutinized their new master. Arthit's sharp, stern eyes swept over the area before stopping at Lookchin, who stood humbly behind them, his head bowed.

"I expect everyone to work at their full capacity," Arthit began, his voice cold and authoritative.

"There is no room here for the lazy, or for parasites who intend to freeload off others without earning their wage. If you aren't worth your pay, I will fire you immediately without exception."

Arthit's words were like poisoned arrows piercing Lookchin's chest. He flinched, his heart aching, knowing all too well that the insult was aimed directly at him in front of everyone.

"And the person helping me in the office will be Lookchin," Arthit continued with a cruel smirk.

"He will handle all accounts and stock. Every requisition, every payment, must go through... Lookchin first. And if the accounts are short even by a single baht, he will be the only one I hold accountable."

Sia Son glanced at his son and sighed softly, knowing Arthit was flexing his power to intimidate the boy. But as a father who wanted his son to learn the business and leadership, he could only stand by and watch.

"Alright, back to work!"

The workers dispersed, leaving a heavy silence between the three. Arthit turned to Lookchin, who was still clenching his trembling hands.

"What are you standing there for? Follow me into the office!" Arthit barked.

"There's a mountain of paperwork from my father. If you don't finish it before sunset, you don't eat tonight. Consider it a way to lose some weight!"

Arthit stormed toward the air conditioned glass office, leaving Lookchin staring at his back with sorrowful eyes. Physical fatigue hadn't even begun, yet the emotional exhaustion was already clogging his throat.

"Hang in there, Lookchin. I'm rooting for you," Sia Son patted the boy's shoulder before heading off to the de-shelling zone.

Lookchin took a deep breath, hiding his fear beneath his innocent face, and followed the tyrant into the office.

The office was encased in clear glass, offering a view of the coconut groves that stretched to the horizon. Inside, it was deathly quiet, save for the clicking of the keyboard and the low hum of the AC. Lookchin focused on the numbers in the documents, occasionally stealing a glance at the broad back of the man sitting at the large desk.

Suddenly, a deep voice broke the silence without looking up from the computer screen.

"Is there a coffee shop around here?"

Lookchin paused mid-page and quickly responded,

"Yes, there is. Would you like some, Khun Arthit?"

Arthit finally looked away from the screen, his sharp gaze so intense that Lookchin shrunk back.

"If I didn't want any, why the hell would I ask?"

"Ye... yes! I'll go buy it for you right away! What would you like, Khun Arthit?" The chubby boy scrambled to his feet, eager to please.

"An iced espresso, less sweet. Be quick. Don't spend your time snacking until you're even more bloated than you already are," Arthit ordered flatly before returning to work, ignoring Lookchin's dejected expression.

Lookchin stepped out of the chilly office into the sweltering heat. He grabbed an old worker's bicycle and pedaled toward the shop near Phai Lom Temple, about 500 meters away. He pedaled through the shimmering heat, sweat beginning to bead at his hairline.

"P'Nuch! One iced espresso, please!" Lookchin called out, panting slightly.

"Oh, Lookchin? You usually only drink cocoa. Drinking coffee today?" P'Nuch, the vendor, asked in surprise. She had known him since he was tiny and had never seen him touch the bitter stuff.

"It's not for me, P'Nuch," Lookchin smiled weakly, wiping sweat with the back of his hand.

"Oh? Who is it for then?"

"For Khun Arthit..."

"Khun Arthit? Oh, Sia Son's son?" P'Nuch's eyes widened.

"He's back from abroad? I heard he's incredibly handsome but very fierce is it true?"

"Yes... he's back," Lookchin replied shortly, not wanting to recount the fierceness he had just experienced.

"Alright, wait a sec. I'll make it extra strong for him."

Soon, the dark coffee in a plastic cup packed with ice was in his hand. Lookchin paid and hung the cup on the handlebar, pedaling back to the warehouse as fast as his legs could go. He was terrified that being even a minute late would bring another storm from Khun Arthit.

He arrived back at the warehouse, his pale face flushed red from the sun and drenched in sweat. He carefully carried the cup into the cool office and placed it on the expensive wooden desk.

"Here... here it is, Khun Arthit. An iced espresso," Lookchin panted softly, carefully wiping the condensation from the cup so it wouldn't ruin the documents.

Arthit looked up, eyeing the sweaty, trembling boy whose heart was thumping audibly. He took a sip... then immediately scowled and slammed the cup onto the desk, splashing coffee onto his hand.

"It's too damn sweet! What the hell did you bring me, Lookchin?"

"Eh... but I ordered espresso from P'Nuch..." Lookchin's heart sank.

"What language were you speaking? This is 'leg-amputating' sweet! Are you trying to kill me? Or did you sneak extra syrup in because you want me to be a pig like you?" Arthit roared, grabbing a tissue to wipe his hand with a look of pure disgust.

"I didn't... I didn't do anything. P'Nuch might have..."

"Don't blame others! You're useless. You can't even get a simple cup of coffee right. Do you think I'm a buffalo who can drink this black syrup?" Arthit stood up, looming over Lookchin, who backed away until he hit the edge of another desk.

"Go buy a new one! And get it through that fat-filled brain of yours that I don't take sugar. Not even a drop!"

"But... the sun is so hot, Khun Arthit. And I have to finish the accounts..."

"Don't negotiate with me! If you can't bring me coffee I can actually drink, you don't do the accounts. And tonight, I'll tell my father that you're lazy, good for nothing, and only live to eat!"

Lookchin bit his lip until it nearly bled, his eyes stinging again. The exhaustion from pedaling in the sun hadn't even faded, yet he was being verbally torn apart over a cup of coffee.

"Yes... I'll go buy a new one right now."

The small boy bowed his head, swallowing his sorrow before turning back into the blistering heat. He didn't see Arthit's sharp eyes watching his retreating back... eyes filled with a cruel satisfaction from the bullying.
