Chapter 4 - Chapter 3 The Parasite

Chapter 3 The Parasite

The following morning, the soft dawn light began to brush over the coconut fronds swaying in the wind. The surroundings looked peaceful, but inside Lookchin's heart, it felt as though storm clouds were gathering. He had been up since 5 AM, preparing himself in sturdy clothes, ready to face whatever work awaited him as ordered the night before.

Lookchin's shoulders jolted in a violent start when the blaring horn of a luxury off-road pickup truck shattered the silence. Arthit rolled down the power window, resting his arm on the door frame, looking at the young man with eyes full of annoyance.

"Stop standing there like an idiot! Get in! One second later and I'm leaving you to walk to the warehouse yourself!"

"Yes..." Lookchin hurried toward the truck in a frantic scramble. In reality, the coconut warehouse wasn't that far from the main house, but within this hundred-acre estate, the zones were clearly divided.

The interior of the truck was deathly silent, save for the low hum of the engine. Lookchin sat pressed against the door, trying to make himself as small as possible to avoid brushing against the tall man beside him. His small hands were clenched so tightly in his lap that his knuckles turned white; he didn't even dare to breathe too loudly.

"What was your job before this?" Arthit suddenly barked. The bluntness of his voice made Lookchin's heart drop.

"I... I did the housework," he replied tremulously, staring only at his fingertips.

"That's it?" Arthit glanced at the boy's soft midsection and plump cheeks with irritation.

"I guess that's why you're getting fatter by the day doing nothing but light work."

"I... I helped the workers sort coconuts sometimes. And I helped watch the front of the warehouse when Uncle wasn't around."

"Well, from now on, you'll do the housework and work at the warehouse with me every single day!" Arthit commanded.

"As for your parents, don't you dare go telling them. I'll handle the talking myself. Just do as you're told and don't make me lose my temper."

"Yes..." Lookchin whispered, his pale face still bowed low.

"And when you speak to me, look up! What the hell are you looking at the floor for? Does it have my name written on it?"

The roar in the cramped space made Lookchin's heart race. He slowly lifted his head, his eyes trembling with unshed tears. The handsome face that once looked so warm in the past was now twisted with a cold rage that made him unrecognizable.

"I'm sorry... Khun Arthit."

"Stop saying sorry! It's annoying!" Arthit snapped, slamming the accelerator and surging the truck forward.

Lookchin sat in silence, his eyes burning. He turned to look out the window to hide his tears. He kept reminding himself: the man beside him was no longer the kind "P'Ja" who used to hold his hand and run through the coconut groves.

'All that's left is Khun Arthit, the cold-hearted owner of the warehouse... ready to crush Lookchin's heart at any moment.'

A moment later, the off road truck pulled up in front of a massive coconut warehouse. Before Arthit stood a gargantuan, newly finished dome. It was infinitely more grand and modern than the one he remembered. Sia Son had poured at least twenty million baht into turning this place into the largest export hub in the province, not to mention the coconut plantations that stretched as far as the eye could see.

Arthit stepped out with an air of authority. His sharp eyes scanned the Thai and Myanmar workers busy at their tasks. The sound of coconuts being shucked and the roar of machinery filled the air. He surveyed his family's empire with a grim intensity, with Lookchin trotting behind him like a shadow.

However, lost in his own anxious thoughts, Lookchin didn't notice when Arthit suddenly came to a dead stop.

Thump!

His soft body collided with Arthit's broad back. Lookchin recoiled, rubbing his forehead.

"Ah! I... I'm sorry, Khun Arthit. I didn't see you stop."

"Keep your eyes open! Watch where I'm walking or stopping! Or are you too busy daydreaming about how to strip my father of his fortune?" Arthit turned and barked in his face. The fury in his eyes made the surrounding air feel stiflingly hot.

"Yes... P'... I mean, Khun Arthit."

"Don't you dare act like my equal!" Arthit's voice thundered, causing the nearby workers to freeze.

"Didn't I tell you I'm an only child? You're just a parasite who tagged along with your mother. Don't call me 'P''; it makes my skin crawl."

Lookchin bit his lip so hard it nearly bled. The pain in his forehead was nothing compared to the lump in his throat.

"I apologize, Khun Arthit. I didn't mean to call you that."

Arthit stepped closer until his large shadow completely engulfed Lookchin. He leaned down and whispered in a cold voice that cut straight to the soul.

"And get this through your head... neither you nor your mother will ever replace my mother. No matter how obsessed my father is with you both, to me... you're just trash I'm waiting to sweep away!"

"Yes..." Lookchin could only bow his head and blink rapidly to keep the tears from falling in front of this cruel man. The tiny hope that the return of his "kind brother" would make the house brighter was now utterly shattered. This wasn't heaven for Lookchin anymore it was hell on earth.

Amidst the noise of the machinery, Sia Son's pickup truck pulled in. The portly man stepped out with a proud smile as he saw his only son surveying the new warehouse.

"How do you like it, son? I tore the old one down and rebuilt it all. Spent a fortune to make it the most modern warehouse in this area." Sia Son patted his son's shoulder, then paused as he saw Lookchin shrinking behind Arthit.

"Oh... Lookchin? What are you doing here, son? Why aren't you helping your mom with the housework?"

Sia Son frowned in confusion. He hadn't expected Arthit's command from last night to be enforced so strictly and so soon.

"Um... well..." Lookchin stuttered, unable to meet anyone's eyes.

"It's good you're here, Dad. I have something to tell you," Arthit interrupted, his voice flat but powerful.

"What is it?"

"I'm taking this 'little pig' to work at the warehouse with me." Arthit flicked a contemptuous glance at Lookchin.

"He's too eyesore-inducing to have wandering around the house. Might as well put him to work here so he earns the rice he eats."

"Wouldn't it be better to get someone else, Arthit? Let Lookchin handle the house like before. The boy has never done heavy labor at a warehouse," Sia Son protested, knowing his son's temperament all too well.

"No. I want him to handle the accounts and stock in the office," Arthit insisted firmly.

"If you want me to manage this place, shouldn't I have the right to choose my own staff?"

Sia Son let out a long, resigned sigh.

"Fine, have it your way... but I'm asking one thing, Arthit. Don't bully the boy too much. Lookchin is only this small."

"Hah... who could even bully him, Dad? He's as big as a water buffalo. I bet his hide is too thick to even feel pain."

The vicious words pierced Lookchin's chest. He stood still, trying to swallow the lump of sorrow. He was used to being seen as an outsider, but being compared to an animal by the man he had secretly admired for years... it hurt so much he could barely stand.

"You really need someone to shut that mouth of yours, Arthit!" Sia Son shook his head in exasperation.

"Go... stop talking. Follow me. I'm going to introduce you to the workers as the new owner."

As Sia Son walked away, Arthit was left alone with Lookchin for a moment. He leaned down close enough to catch the faint scent of baby powder from the boy's skin.

"Follow me. Don't make me call you twice... and remember, if there's even one mistake in the accounts I give you, be prepared for your punishment."

Arthitleft him with a chilling, cold smile before following his father, leaving Lookchin trembling with dread...
