Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 – The Distance

The days after the door incident felt heavy for Lena.

Every time she saw Ethan in the hallways or the dining area, she felt a pang in her chest—equal parts longing and fear.

She couldn't explain it.

Part of her wanted to run to him, to fall into his arms again and pretend the world didn't exist.

But another part of her wanted to hide.

The rumors. The lodge gossip. Maya. Everything… it's too complicated.

So Lena pulled away.

She stopped joining the late-night study sessions. She laughed less at his jokes. She avoided the moments when their hands might brush, when their eyes might meet.

Ethan noticed immediately.

"Lena…" he said one afternoon, catching up with her as she tried to slip past the library.

She turned sharply. "Hi. I'm… busy."

He frowned, his calm face shadowed with concern. "Busy? You haven't been in the study room in days. Are you avoiding me?"

She froze. The words stung because they were true.

"I… I just have a lot to do," she muttered, looking anywhere but at him.

He sighed. "Lena, I know something's wrong. Please… just tell me."

Her chest tightened. She wanted to explain everything—the kiss, the tension, the fear, the way her heart refused to stop racing around him.

But she couldn't. Not entirely.

"I… it's nothing," she whispered. "Really."

He studied her face for a long moment, then nodded. "If you say so… but I'm here when you're ready to talk."

And with that, he left, leaving Lena trembling where she stood.

That night, she sat in her room, her phone in her hand. She knew he would text her eventually—he always did—but she didn't know if she wanted him to.

Finally, after an hour of staring at a blank screen, she typed, hesitated, then sent:

"Do you… like me?"

Her heart raced as she waited for his reply.

The response came almost instantly:

"No."

Her stomach dropped.

No.

It made sense. He had a girlfriend. He was loyal. He was fair.

But that didn't make the ache in her chest any less.

She stared at the screen for a long time, trying to make sense of the words.

Then another message followed, softer this time:

"I like her. You know that. You're amazing, Lena… but I can't."

Her fingers trembled as she typed a reply, barely able to hold the phone:

"I understand."

And that was it.

No further words. No conversation.

It hurt.

It stung.

And yet… somehow, it was fair.

Over the next few days, Lena tried to act normal. She smiled in the hallways. She joined her friends. She laughed at jokes.

But inside, she was quietly nursing a broken heart.

Ethan, too, tried to act normal. But every time he caught her glance, every time she lingered near him for a brief second too long, he felt a flicker of something dangerous—something he shouldn't feel.

And yet, despite the heartbreak, despite the distance, despite the unspoken truth between them…

Their friendship began to grow.

Late-night study sessions returned, slowly.

Coffee runs became an excuse to talk longer.

Movies ended with quiet moments just sitting beside each other.

And every time Lena rested her head on his shoulder, or he brushed a strand of hair from her face, they both knew:

The timing was wrong.

But the feelings… they were impossible to ignore.
