Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 – Secrets in the Dark

The lodge had grown quiet again. Most of the girls were asleep, the faint hum of the ceiling fan filling the room.

Lena had stayed late, claiming she needed to finish her history notes, but Ethan knew better.

"You really do want to read that long essay at midnight?" he asked, leaning against the bed with his usual calm expression.

Lena shrugged, trying to hide her smile. "I have to… you know, keep my grades up."

"Right," Ethan said softly, a knowing look in his eyes. "Sure."

Minutes turned into hours as they read together, side by side. Lena sat cross-legged on the floor; Ethan leaned against the bed, his laptop open between them. Occasionally, they would glance at each other and share a quiet laugh over a sentence, a joke in the text, or a silly mistake.

By the time Lena yawned, Ethan's hand brushed hers. She didn't pull away. Instead, she let it linger, the warmth spreading through her chest like fire.

"You can sleep here if you want," Ethan offered quietly, almost as if testing the waters.

Lena hesitated. She shouldn't… but…

"I… okay," she whispered, crawling onto the bed beside him.

The room was dark except for the faint glow of the laptop screen. Lena rested her head on Ethan's shoulder, just as she had the first night. He draped an arm around her, careful, comforting, and impossibly tender.

For a long while, they said nothing.

Then, as the movie played quietly in the background, Lena shifted slightly, and their lips met.

Soft. Electric. Familiar.

It was the same as before—steamy, heated, yet restrained. Lena pulled back when Ethan's hands moved too far, shaking her head.

"I said no further," she whispered.

Ethan only nodded, resting his forehead against hers. "I know."

But the tension remained.

Every glance, every touch, every accidental brush of skin sent sparks through them.

It became their new rhythm:

Late-night studying

Movies that turned into quiet cuddles

Kisses that lingered just long enough to remind them both of what they wanted… but couldn't fully take

No one in the lodge knew. Not a single person.

Until the night of the broken door.

That incident had forced Lena to stay in Ethan's room, making their secret even riskier. But the thrill, the closeness, the intimacy—it was impossible to resist.

By the end of the night, Lena knew one thing for sure:

She was falling for him.

And Ethan… she wasn't sure if he wasn't falling for her too.
