Chapter 33 - Aftermath and Tension

The night at Marcus's house had ended, but the chaos lingered.

Chelsea left the party earlier than most, wanting to avoid any unnecessary attention. She walked along the quiet streets, the cool night air brushing against her skin. Her thoughts, however, were far from calm.

Vanessa's glare. Her threats. Adrian's smirk.

Chelsea's mind replayed every word from the confrontation at the party. She couldn't help but feel a mixture of frustration and… curiosity. Adrian had stayed calm, as always, but that glance he had given her before Vanessa stormed out had made her heart skip a beat.

Why does he always act like nothing affects him?

Back at Marcus's house, the party was winding down.

Leo sprawled on the couch dramatically, groaning.

"I need a nap. That was exhausting."

Marcus laughed.

"Man, it's not even over. Vanessa's going to be plotting all week."

Ethan, leaning against the wall quietly, added,

"She always does. This isn't going to be easy for Chelsea."

Adrian, still standing near the patio door, kept his gaze focused on the empty street where Chelsea had left.

Leo nudged him.

"You worried about her?"

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Why would I be?"

Leo smirked.

"You always do that. Pretend you don't care."

Adrian shrugged.

"Most things aren't worth caring about."

Leo rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, except her. Admit it."

Adrian didn't answer. He didn't need to.

His eyes, however, followed Chelsea's figure until she disappeared into the night.

Chelsea reached home and quietly entered the house, relieved that the house was empty. Her mom was asleep early, as usual, and she could have a moment to herself.

She dropped her bag and collapsed on her bed. The events of the night replayed vividly in her mind:

Vanessa's cold, dangerous glare.

Adrian's calm, protective presence.

The whispers of the crowd around them.

Chelsea exhaled, trying to shake the tension off. She had survived Vanessa tonight. Barely.

But she couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that this was just the beginning.

The next morning, school was buzzing. Word about the party spread quickly, and everyone seemed to have an opinion. Some students whispered in the hallways, others stared openly as Chelsea walked by.

Mia found her near the lockers.

"You survived?" she asked dramatically.

Chelsea rolled her eyes.

"Barely. Vanessa was terrifying."

Mia's eyes sparkled.

"And Adrian? Did he—?"

Chelsea shook her head.

"He didn't say anything. Just… stood there. Watching. Calm as ever."

Mia grinned.

"That's Adrian. Always calm, always unreadable. You know he likes you."

Chelsea scoffed.

"Not happening. He's annoying and cocky. That's all."

Mia rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, yeah. Keep telling yourself that."

Adrian's group of friends noticed Chelsea's arrival too.

Leo nudged Marcus.

"She's here early. About to face Vanessa again?"

Marcus smirked.

"Probably. She can handle herself."

Ethan, however, remained silent.

"Don't underestimate Vanessa. She's dangerous," he murmured.

Adrian didn't reply. He simply leaned back against the wall, his expression unreadable.

Chelsea caught his eye for a brief second, but he looked away immediately, as if nothing had happened.

Chelsea shook her head.

Impossible to read him.

During break, Vanessa didn't waste time. She arrived with Ryan and Cole, flanked by a few of her closest followers.

She found Chelsea sitting alone at a table near the courtyard.

Vanessa's voice rang clearly.

"Ah, the little bookworm. Out in the open."

Chelsea looked up, unfazed.

"Morning, Vanessa."

Vanessa's smile was cold.

"Enjoying the party last night, I see?"

Chelsea shrugged.

"It was… enlightening."

Vanessa stepped closer, deliberately invading Chelsea's personal space.

"You think you can just walk into Adrian's world without consequences?"

Chelsea crossed her arms.

"I didn't walk into his world. I exist in mine. And I don't need permission to do that."

Vanessa's face darkened.

"You're asking for trouble."

Chelsea tilted her head.

"Then maybe you should stop threatening people. It's exhausting to listen to."

Several students nearby whispered, watching the tension unfold.

Just as Vanessa opened her mouth to retaliate, Adrian arrived.

He didn't yell. He didn't raise his voice. He simply stepped in front of Chelsea.

"Enough."

Vanessa froze.

"You again?" she spat.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"This ends here. Tonight."

Vanessa's eyes narrowed, her dangerous glare never leaving Chelsea.

"You'll regret this," she hissed, stepping back slightly.

Adrian didn't reply. He simply stayed there, blocking Chelsea from her intimidation.

Chelsea noticed a small, almost imperceptible twitch in his jaw.

He's not going to admit it. Not ever.

But the protective stance, the calm authority—everything about him screamed otherwise.

Vanessa eventually turned on her heel and stormed away, muttering threats under her breath, Ryan and Cole following closely.

The crowd slowly dispersed, whispering among themselves about the confrontation.

Chelsea exhaled, finally allowing herself to lean back slightly.

Adrian stepped aside, his usual calm demeanor back in place.

Chelsea studied him carefully.

"You didn't even say anything."

Adrian shrugged lightly.

"Didn't need to."

Chelsea rolled her eyes.

"Annoying."

Adrian smirked faintly.

"You started this."

Chelsea shook her head, realizing that for Adrian, nothing ever really changed.

He would never tell how he felt.

Not now. Not ever.

And that… frustrated her more than anything else.
