Chapter 25 - Chapter 24 - The Road to Neutral

Age 24 — Gu Clan Compound — Departure Dawn

The gate opened.

Gu Chen stepped through first. Behind him, Gu Lian and Gu Mei followed. Behind them, a dozen clan warriors — silent, armed, watchful.

The red sky of the Blood Domain gave way to normal sky as they crossed the boundary. The air lightened. The weight on Gu Chen's chest eased, just slightly.

The Soldier: Out.

The King: Free.

The Beggar: For now.

The Monk: Breathe.

Gu Chen breathed.

---

Day one

They traveled in silence.

Gu Lian led. Gu Mei flanked. The warriors spread out in formation, watching for threats that never came.

At night, they made camp. No fires — too visible. They ate cold rations and watched the stars.

Gu Mei sat beside him.

"You've never left the Domain since you arrived."

It was not a question.

"No."

"How does it feel?"

Gu Chen looked at the sky. The stars were different here. Brighter. More familiar.

"Strange."

Gu Mei smiled. "Strange good or strange bad?"

He considered.

"Strange."

She laughed. It was a quiet sound.

"You're impossible."

The Orphan: She keeps saying that.

The Beggar: She keeps coming back.

The Soldier: She's still here.

The Monk: That matters.

Gu Chen did not respond.

---

Day three

They passed through a village.

Small. Poor. The kind of place that existed because people had nowhere else to go. Children played in the dirt. Old women watched from doorways.

Gu Chen slowed.

The Orphan: Remember?

The Beggar: Zhao family.

The Soldier: Keep moving.

The King: No time.

Gu Mei noticed.

"What is it?"

He shook his head. Kept walking.

But something in his chest ached.

---

Day five

Gu Lian called a halt.

"Trouble ahead."

They had reached a narrow pass. Mountains rose on either side. The only path wound through a valley thick with trees.

"Ambush ground," Gu Lian said. "If someone wanted to hit us, this is where."

The Soldier: Fight.

The King: Assess.

The Beggar: Run?

The Monk: Wait.

Gu Chen looked at the valley.

"Send scouts."

Gu Lian nodded. Two warriors slipped into the trees.

---

An hour later

One returned.

"Mo Clan. Twenty, maybe thirty. Waiting at the far end."

Gu Lian's expression did not change.

"They knew we were coming."

The Soldier: Traitor?

The King: Or spy.

The Beggar: Or both.

Gu Chen looked at the valley.

"How far to the other side?"

"Half a day, if we push."

Gu Lian met his eyes. "We can't fight thirty. Not here. Not with the terrain against us."

The Soldier: Then we don't fight.

The King: Then we go around.

The Beggar: Then we run.

Gu Chen nodded.

"Find another way."

---

Six hours later

They found it.

A goat path, barely visible, climbing the eastern slope. Dangerous. Slow. But passable.

They climbed.

Behind them, the valley waited. Empty.

---

Day seven

They emerged on the other side of the mountains.

The Neutral Zone lay ahead. Visible now as a smudge on the horizon — a city of black stone and strange towers, surrounded by land that belonged to no clan.

Gu Lian stopped.

"We'll reach it tomorrow."

Gu Chen looked at the city.

The Orphan: Back.

The Soldier: Different.

The King: This time we're not alone.

The Beggar: This time we're clan.

The Monk: This time we choose.

He touched the pendant at his chest.

---

That night

Gu Mei found him at the edge of camp.

"You're quiet. More than usual."

Gu Chen said nothing.

She sat beside him. "Tomorrow everything changes. You know that, right?"

The Orphan: She's scared.

The Beggar: She's warning.

The Soldier: She's still here.

Gu Chen looked at her.

"What do you think will happen?"

Gu Mei was quiet for a long moment. Then: "I don't know. But I know my uncle. He doesn't send people to gatherings like this unless he expects to gain something." She met his eyes. "Or lose something."

The King: A trade.

The Soldier: A sacrifice.

The Beggar: A discard.

Gu Chen nodded.

"I know."

Gu Mei stared at him. "And you're still going?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

He considered the question.

"Because if I don't, I'll never know."

"Know what?"

The Orphan: Who we are.

The Soldier: What we're worth.

The King: What we can become.

The Monk: What we choose.

Gu Chen looked at the city on the horizon.

"Everything."

---

Dawn — Day eight

They reached the Neutral Zone.

The gates were open. Guards in grey robes watched them approach but did not stop them. Inside, the city was exactly as Gu Chen remembered — crowded, chaotic, alive.

But different now.

He was not a rootless wanderer anymore.

He was Gu Clan.

The Soldier: We have status.

The King: We have power.

The Beggar: We have targets on our backs.

The Monk: We have choices.

Gu Lian led them through the streets. Warriors flanked. Gu Mei stayed close.

They stopped before a large compound — black stone, Gu Clan symbols carved above the gate.

"Our quarters." Gu Lian turned to him. "Rest. The gathering starts in three days."

Gu Chen looked at the compound.

Then at the city beyond.

Somewhere out there, the Eight Clans were gathering.

And somewhere, closer than he knew, a woman in white was watching.

---

Outside the city walls

Too far to see, close enough to feel.

Su Wan stood at the edge of the Neutral Zone, looking at the black stone walls.

Her hand pressed against a dying tree.

It cracked.

"Five down," she whispered.

"Four to go."

She looked toward the city.

"He's here," she breathed. "With them. Playing their game."

The wind moved through dead branches.

"But he's still him. Underneath."

She did not move for a long time.
