Chapter 24 - Chapter 23 - The Hunter's Game

Age 24 — Gu Clan Compound — Eight Months Later

The missions never stopped.

Mo Clan skirmishes. Territory disputes. Assassinations that no one spoke about afterward. Gu Chen became a name whispered in fear across the Blood Domain and beyond.

"The Bastard Killer."

"Gu Tianxiong's blade."

"The Nascent Soul ghost."

Gu Chen heard all of it. Said nothing.

The Soldier: Fear is good.

The King: Reputation is power.

The Beggar: Reputation is also a target.

The Monk: You're becoming what they want.

Gu Chen did not disagree.

---

Gu Lian

She had stopped asking questions.

They fought together. Survived together. Drank together in silence afterward. She was the closest thing to an ally he had in this place.

"You're different now," she said one night.

They sat at the edge of the compound, looking out at the unchanging red sky. The flask passed between them as it always did.

Gu Chen said nothing.

"Colder. Faster. More efficient." She glanced at him. "You're becoming exactly what he wants."

The Soldier: Good.

The King: Smart.

The Beggar: Dangerous.

The Monk: Is it?

Gu Chen met her gaze.

"What do you want me to be?"

Gu Lian was quiet for a long moment. Then she laughed. It was a rough sound.

"I don't know. Something else."

She stood. Walked away.

Gu Chen watched her go.

The Orphan: She cares.

The Beggar: She's still here.

The Soldier: She's useful.

The Monk: She's a friend.

Gu Chen did not know which was true.

---

Gu Mei

She appeared less often now, but when she did, her warnings were sharper.

"My uncle is planning something."

Gu Chen looked at her.

"Something big. Something involving you." She leaned closer. "I don't know what. But the elders are talking. Names are being mentioned. Yours, mostly."

The Soldier: A trap.

The King: An opportunity.

The Beggar: Death.

The Monk: A choice.

Gu Chen nodded.

"Thank you."

Gu Mei stared at him. "That's all? 'Thank you'?"

"What else should I say?"

She shook her head. "You really are impossible." She turned to leave. "Be careful, cousin. The game is almost over."

She vanished into the darkness.

---

Three days later

Gu Tianxiong summoned him.

The throne room was the same — dark, cold, heavy. But something was different. A tension in the air. A weight that had not been there before.

His father sat on the black stone throne, watching him approach.

"You've done well."

Gu Chen said nothing.

"The elders are impressed. The clan respects you. The enemies fear you." Gu Tianxiong leaned forward. "You're ready."

The Soldier: Ready for what?

The King: The next step.

The Beggar: The end.

Gu Chen waited.

Gu Tianxiong smiled.

"There's a gathering. The Eight Clans. Once a century." He paused. "You'll represent the Gu Clan."

The Orphan: Us?

The Soldier: An honor.

The King: A test.

The Beggar: A trap.

Gu Chen met his father's gaze.

"Why me?"

Gu Tianxiong's smile widened. "Because you're my blood. Because you've proven yourself. Because..." He paused. "Because the other clans need to see what we've produced."

Weapon. Property. Product.

The Orphan: Same words.

The Beggar: Same meaning.

Gu Chen nodded.

"When?"

"Three months. The Neutral Zone." Gu Tianxiong waved a hand. "Prepare. Train. Don't embarrass me."

Gu Chen bowed.

Turned to leave.

"Oh, and boy."

He stopped.

"Don't think of running. The Eight Clans don't forgive absence."

Gu Chen walked out.

---

That night

He stood at the window, looking out at the red sky.

Three months.

The Neutral Zone.

The Eight Clans.

The Orphan: We're going back.

The Soldier: We're going as clan.

The King: We're going as representatives.

The Beggar: We're going as bait.

The Monk: We're going to choose.

Gu Chen touched the pendant at his chest.

His mother's face. Still unseen.

But something had shifted.

The game was changing.

---

The next morning

Gu Lian found him at training.

"You're going to the gathering."

It was not a question.

"Yes."

She was quiet for a moment. Then: "I've been. Once. Years ago."

Gu Chen looked at her.

"It's dangerous. Not because of fighting — because of politics. Alliances. Betrayals." She met his eyes. "The Eight Clans don't fight with swords. They fight with words. With promises. With lies."

The King: Our kind of fight.

The Soldier: We can do this.

The Beggar: Or die trying.

Gu Chen nodded.

"I understand."

Gu Lian studied him. "Do you?" She shook her head. "You don't. Not yet. But you will."

She walked away.

---

Gu Mei

She found him that evening.

"I heard about the gathering."

Gu Chen nodded.

"You can't go."

He looked at her.

"My uncle will use you there. Sacrifice you if it benefits him. Trade you to another clan. Sell you to the highest bidder." Her voice was urgent. "You're not a representative. You're a bargaining chip."

The Orphan: She's right.

The Soldier: She's scared.

The King: She's telling the truth.

Gu Chen was quiet for a long moment.

Then: "I know."

Gu Mei stared at him. "You know? And you're still going?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

He met her eyes.

"Because if I don't, I'm useless. And useless things get discarded."

Gu Mei opened her mouth. Closed it. Shook her head.

"You're a fool."

"Probably."

She turned to leave. Stopped.

"Don't die out there."

She walked away.

Gu Chen stood alone.

The Monk: She cares.

The Beggar: She's still here.

The Soldier: She's useful.

The King: She's a friend.

The Orphan: Like Liang. Like Gu Lian.

All of them: Like everyone who will leave.

Gu Chen touched the pendant.

He was used to that.

---

Two months later

Preparations intensified.

Gu Chen trained harder than ever. His body responded faster, hit harder, moved more efficiently. His core pulsed with power that had been building for months.

He was close to a breakthrough. Void realm. The realm where cultivators began to manipulate space itself.

The Soldier: Soon.

The King: At the gathering?

The Beggar: Or in battle?

The Monk: Or in abandonment?

Gu Chen did not know.

But he could feel it coming.

---

One month before the gathering

Gu Tianxiong summoned him again.

"You leave in four weeks. You'll travel with a delegation. Gu Lian will accompany you. Gu Mei as well." He paused. "Don't fail me."

Gu Chen nodded.

"There's something else." Gu Tianxiong's voice was flat. "The Mo Clan will be there. They've requested a meeting with you specifically."

The Soldier: Why?

The King: They know about the missions.

The Beggar: They want revenge.

The Monk: Or an alliance.

Gu Chen met his father's gaze.

"What do they want?"

Gu Tianxiong smiled. It was not a warm smile.

"That's what you'll find out."

---

That night

Gu Chen stood at the window.

Four weeks.

The Mo Clan.

The Eight Clans.

The Neutral Zone.

The Orphan: We're walking into the lion's den.

The Soldier: We've done that before.

The King: This time it's different.

The Beggar: This time everyone's watching.

The Monk: This time we choose.

Gu Chen touched the pendant.

His mother's face. Still unseen.

But maybe, in the Neutral Zone, he would find answers.

Or maybe he would find death.

Either way, he was ready.

---

Outside the compound walls

A woman in white stood at the edge of the Blood Domain.

Her hand pressed against black stone.

It cracked.

"Five down," Su Wan whispered.

"Four to go."

She looked toward the small window where a figure stood motionless.

"He's going to the gathering," she breathed. "Where everything will change."

The wind moved through dead air.

"Where he'll have to choose."

She did not move for a long time.
