Chapter 27 - Chapter 26 - The Alliance Offer

Age 24 — Neutral Zone — Gu Clan Compound — Night

Sleep did not come.

Gu Chen sat at the window, watching the city below. Lights flickered. Shadows moved. Somewhere out there, the Eight Clans were deciding his future.

The King: They've already decided.

The Soldier: We don't know what.

The Beggar: We know enough. They want to use us.

The Monk: The question is how.

Gu Chen touched the pendant.

Waiting.

---

Dawn

A knock.

Gu Lian stood at the door, expression unreadable.

"Mo Yu is here. Again. She requests a private meeting."

The Soldier: Alone?

The King: Dangerous.

The Beggar: Informative.

The Monk: Choose.

Gu Chen stood.

"Where?"

"The gardens. She came alone."

---

The gardens

Mo Yu waited beneath a tree with leaves the color of blood.

Not real blood — something else. A trick of the light, or the Neutral Zone's strange energy.

"You came."

Gu Chen stopped a few paces away.

"You asked."

Mo Yu smiled. "Still don't say much." She gestured to a stone bench. "Sit. Please."

He sat.

She sat across from him.

"I spoke to my father last night. About you."

The Soldier: Enemy.

The King: Information.

The Beggar: Trap.

The Monk: Listen.

Gu Chen waited.

"He wants you dead. Most of the elders agree." She paused. "I convinced them to wait."

"Why?"

Mo Yu met his eyes. "Because you're interesting. Because you're not like the rest of them." She leaned forward. "Because I think you could be useful — to both of us."

The Orphan: Alliance?

The Soldier: With the enemy?

The King: With someone who sees us.

The Beggar: With someone who wants to use us.

Gu Chen's expression did not change.

"What do you want?"

Mo Yu smiled. "Straight to the point. Good." She reached into her robe and pulled out a small jade token. "This is a marker. A promise. The Mo Clan will not move against you for one year."

She placed it on the bench between them.

"In exchange, you owe me a favor. To be named later."

The Soldier: Dangerous.

The King: Valuable.

The Beggar: Trap.

The Monk: Choice.

Gu Chen looked at the token.

Then at Mo Yu.

"If the favor is impossible?"

"Then it's not owed."

"If it costs my life?"

She smiled. "Then I chose wrong."

Gu Chen picked up the token.

"One year."

Mo Yu nodded. "One year." She stood. "The gathering continues tomorrow. Watch your back. Not everyone is as patient as me."

She walked away.

Gu Chen sat alone in the garden, the jade token warm in his hand.

The Orphan: An ally.

The Soldier: A leash.

The King: A tool.

The Monk: A choice.

He tucked the token into his robe. Beside the pendant.

---

That afternoon

Gu Mei found him in the compound.

"You met with Mo Yu again."

It was not a question.

"Yes."

She stared at him. "Do you have any idea how dangerous that is? The Mo Clan killed three of our warriors. You killed four of theirs. And you're meeting in secret?"

The Soldier: She's scared.

The King: She's loyal.

The Beggar: She's still here.

Gu Chen met her gaze.

"She offered an alliance."

Gu Mei's eyes widened. "And you accepted?"

"A favor. For a year of peace."

Gu Mei was silent for a long moment. Then she laughed. It was a broken sound.

"You really are impossible." She turned to leave. Stopped. "Be careful, cousin. Favors to the Mo Clan have a way of becoming chains."

She walked away.

Gu Chen watched her go.

The Monk: She's not wrong.

The King: She's not right either.

The Soldier: She's still here.

---

Evening

Gu Lian found him at training.

"Mo Yu."

Gu Chen nodded.

"An alliance?"

"A favor."

Gu Lian studied him. "Dangerous."

"I know."

"She'll use it against you eventually."

"Probably."

Gu Lian was quiet for a moment. Then: "But you took it anyway."

The Soldier: Yes.

The King: We need allies.

The Beggar: Even dangerous ones.

The Monk: Even temporary ones.

Gu Chen met her gaze.

"I need time."

Gu Lian nodded slowly. "Time for what?"

He did not answer.

---

Night

The city glittered below.

Gu Chen sat at the window, the jade token in one hand, the pendant in the other.

The Orphan: Two tokens now.

The Soldier: Two promises.

The King: Two debts.

The Beggar: Two traps.

The Monk: Two choices.

He did not know which was true.

But for the first time, he had options.

Options meant power.

Power meant survival.

And survival meant he could still choose.

---

Outside the city walls

Su Wan stood in shadow.

Her hand pressed against stone.

It cracked.

"Five down," she whispered.

"Four to go."

She looked toward the glittering city.

"He's making deals now," she breathed. "With enemies. With strangers."

The wind moved through dead air.

"He's learning."

She did not move for a long time.
