Chapter 32 - Chapter 31 - The Road to Mo

Age 25 — Road to Mo Clan Territory — Night

The chains did not loosen.

Gu Chen walked at the center of the escort, wrists bound, core dimmed, strength leeched by the spirit chains. The warriors around him did not speak. Gu Lian led, her back to him, her silence heavier than any words.

The pendant was still in his hand. He had not let go since Gu Mei pressed it through the bars.

Warm. Always warm.

The Soldier: They're taking us to die.

The King: To be traded.

The Beggar: Same thing.

The Monk: Not yet.

Gu Chen looked at the sky. The stars were wrong here — not the red of the Blood Domain, not the familiar wrong of the Cultivation World. Something between.

He touched the pendant.

His mother's face. Still unseen.

---

Midnight

They stopped to rest.

Gu Chen sat apart, still bound, still watched. Gu Lian stood guard, her sword drawn, her face turned away.

He did not speak to her.

She did not speak to him.

The pendant warmed in his palm.

The Orphan: She was there. When they bound us.

The Soldier: She didn't stop it.

The King: She followed orders.

The Beggar: They all follow orders.

Gu Chen looked at Gu Lian's back.

He had fought beside her. Survived beside her. Trusted her, as much as he trusted anyone.

And now she led his captors.

The Monk: She had no choice.

The Beggar: There's always a choice.

The Soldier: She chose them.

Gu Chen looked away.

It did not matter.

Nothing mattered except the road ahead.

---

Dawn

They walked again.

The landscape changed as they traveled. The heavy air of the Blood Domain faded. The sky shifted from red to gray to something almost normal.

Almost.

Gu Chen's core pulsed weakly under the chains. Not in warning — in memory. It remembered what it felt like to be free.

The King: We'll be free again.

The Soldier: When?

The King: When we choose.

Gu Chen did not know what that meant.

But the words stayed with him.

---

Three days

The Mo Clan border.

The air changed again — not heavy like the Blood Domain, but chaotic. The sky flickered. The ground shifted underfoot. In the distance, mountains crumbled and reformed as they watched.

Gu Lian raised a hand.

"We're here. Mo Clan territory."

The warriors tensed.

Gu Chen stood still, chains heavy, pendant warm.

The Soldier: Enemy lands.

The King: New rules.

The Beggar: New enemies.

The Monk: New possibilities.

Gu Lian turned to him. Finally met his eyes.

"Whatever happens now... I'm sorry."

Gu Chen said nothing.

She looked away.

They crossed the border.

---

Mo Clan compound

It was not like the Blood Domain.

Where the Gu Clan built in black stone and heavy silence, the Mo Clan built in motion. Walls that seemed to shift. Towers that leaned at impossible angles. Cultivators who moved like shadows, appearing and disappearing without warning.

Gu Chen was led through the compound, past disciples who stared with open curiosity, past elders who watched with cold assessment.

At the center, a hall.

Not a throne room — something else. A gathering place, open to the sky, filled with warriors and elders and one figure he recognized.

Mo Yu.

She stood at the far end, waiting.

---

The meeting

Gu Chen was pushed forward. The chains clinked with each step.

Mo Yu watched him approach, her expression unreadable.

When he stopped before her, she spoke.

"So. The Gu Clan's blade. Delivered in chains."

Gu Chen said nothing.

Mo Yu circled him slowly. "My father wanted you dead. Most of the elders agreed." She stopped before him. "I convinced them to wait."

The Soldier: She wants something.

The King: She always wanted something.

The Beggar: The favor.

The Monk: The choice.

Gu Chen met her eyes.

"And now?"

Mo Yu smiled. It was not a warm smile — but it was not cruel either.

"Now we talk."

---

The cell

They put him in a room.

Not a dungeon — actual quarters. A bed. A desk. A window that looked out over the shifting Mo landscape.

The chains were removed.

Gu Chen stood in the center of the room, flexing his wrists, feeling his core pulse back to life.

The Soldier: Free.

The King: Not free. Just... different chains.

The Beggar: Always chains.

The Monk: Always choices.

Gu Chen touched the pendant.

Still warm.

Still waiting.

---

That night

A knock.

Mo Yu entered without waiting for permission.

"You're settled."

Gu Chen said nothing.

She sat at the desk, watching him. "You're probably wondering what happens now."

The Soldier: Yes.

The King: Information.

The Beggar: Trap.

The Monk: Listen.

Gu Chen waited.

Mo Yu leaned back. "My father wants you dead. The elders agree. But I reminded them of something." She paused. "You're more valuable alive. For now."

"For how long?"

Mo Yu smiled. "That depends on you."

She stood.

"Rest. Tomorrow, we talk properly."

She walked out.

Gu Chen stood alone.

---

Outside, beyond the compound walls

Too far to see, close enough to feel.

A woman in white stood at the edge of Mo territory.

Her hand pressed against a dying tree.

It cracked.

"Six down," Su Wan whispered.

"Three to go."

She looked toward the compound, toward a small window where a figure stood motionless.

"He's in their hands now," she breathed. "Traded. Sold. Used."

The wind moved through dead branches.

"But he's still breathing. Still thinking. Still him."

She did not move for a long time.
