Chapter 19 - Chapter 18 - The Last Month

Age 23 — Crimson Cloud Sect — Senior Inner Disciple Quarters

Five months since Gu Tianming's first visit.

One month remaining.

Gu Chen stood at the window, watching the sun rise over the mountains. The pendant hung from a cord around his neck now. He had stopped taking it off.

The King: Thirty days.

The Soldier: Thirty days to prepare.

The Beggar: Thirty days to run.

The Monk: Thirty days to choose.

Gu Chen touched the pendant.

He still did not know what he would do.

---

That afternoon

Elder Xu summoned him.

Her office was the same as always — cluttered, cold, lit by a single lamp. She sat behind her desk, watching him with eyes that missed nothing.

"You're leaving."

It was not a question.

Gu Chen said nothing.

"The stranger comes and goes. The disciples whisper. The Gu Clan doesn't send messengers to rootless wanderers." She leaned back. "I'm not stupid."

The Soldier: Deny.

The King: Listen.

The Monk: Truth.

Gu Chen met her gaze.

"Yes."

Elder Xu nodded slowly. "When?"

"Thirty days."

She was quiet for a long moment. Then she reached into her desk and pulled out a small pouch. Pushed it across the table.

"Spirit stones. Enough to get you wherever you're going."

Gu Chen looked at the pouch. Then at her.

"Why?"

Elder Xu's expression did not change. "Because you're the best disciple this sect has produced in decades. Because you didn't have to stay, but you did. Because..." She paused. "Because someone should."

The Orphan: She means it.

The Beggar: She's saying goodbye.

The Soldier: Take the stones.

Gu Chen took the pouch.

"Thank you."

Elder Xu waved a hand. "Go. Before I change my mind."

He turned to leave.

"Gu Chen."

He stopped.

"If you survive whatever comes next — if you come out the other side — remember that one old woman gave you a chance when she didn't have to."

Gu Chen looked back.

"I'll remember."

He walked out.

---

That night

Liang found him at the training ground.

"You're leaving."

Gu Chen did not ask how he knew. Rumors traveled fast in a small sect.

"Yes."

Liang was quiet for a moment. Then: "Take me with you."

Gu Chen looked at him.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because where I'm going, people like you don't come back."

Liang's face fell. But he did not argue. He nodded slowly.

"Then at least let me say goodbye properly." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small flask. "Stolen from the elder's stores. Best wine in the sect."

Gu Chen looked at the flask.

Then at Liang.

Then he sat down on the training ground steps.

Liang sat beside him. They passed the flask back and forth in silence.

The Orphan: A friend.

The Beggar: A temporary friend.

The Soldier: A useful friend.

The Monk: A friend.

Gu Chen drank.

---

Twenty days remaining

Gu Tianming appeared at dawn.

He stood at the edge of the training ground, watching Gu Chen complete his forms. When Gu Chen finished, he walked over.

"You've grown stronger."

Gu Chen said nothing.

"The clan will be pleased." Gu Tianming's voice was flat. "They like their weapons sharp."

Weapon.

The word again.

Gu Chen met his gaze.

"I'm not a weapon."

Gu Tianming smiled. It was not a kind smile. "Everyone's a weapon, boy. The only question is who's holding it."

He turned and walked away.

Gu Chen stood there for a long time.

---

Fifteen days

He stopped training.

Not because he was ready — because training had become automatic. His body knew what to do. His mind needed to focus on something else.

He walked through the sect instead. Past the outer disciple quarters, where he had started. Past the training ground, where he had earned his place. Past Elder Xu's office, where a single lamp still burned.

He memorized it all.

The King: You might never see this place again.

The Orphan: You might never see any place again.

The Soldier: Then remember it. All of it.

Gu Chen remembered.

---

Ten days

Liang found him at the window.

"I brought more wine."

They sat together, passing the flask, watching the stars.

"I'm scared for you," Liang said quietly.

Gu Chen did not answer.

"I know you don't care. I know you think nothing matters. But I care." Liang's voice was rough. "You're the only person in this place who ever looked at me like I was real."

The Orphan: He's crying.

The Beggar: He's drunk.

The Soldier: He's honest.

Gu Chen looked at Liang.

"I'll try to come back."

Liang laughed. It was a wet sound. "You're a terrible liar."

"Yeah."

They sat in silence until dawn.

---

Five days

Elder Xu summoned him one last time.

"The stranger is here. Waiting at the east gate." She did not look up from her papers. "Go. Before I change my mind about letting you leave alive."

Gu Chen bowed.

"Thank you. For everything."

She waved a hand. Did not watch him leave.

---

The east gate

Gu Tianming stood in the shadows, arms folded.

"You're late."

Gu Chen ignored him. He turned back to look at the sect one last time.

The buildings. The training ground. The window where Liang was probably watching.

The Orphan: Say goodbye.

The Soldier: No time.

The King: Remember.

Gu Chen remembered.

He turned and walked toward Gu Tianming.

"I'm ready."

Gu Tianming studied him. "Are you?"

"No. But I'm going anyway."

Gu Tianming laughed. It was the first genuine sound Gu Chen had heard from him.

"Good answer."

They walked into the darkness.

---

Behind them, on the ridge

A woman in white stood beneath a dying tree.

Her hand pressed against the bark.

It cracked.

"Five down," Su Wan whispered.

"Four to go."

She watched until the two figures disappeared into the night.

"He's walking into their hands," she breathed. "He knows it. He's going anyway."

The wind moved through dead branches.

"That's who he is. That's who he's always been."

She did not move for a long time.
