Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Captive Shadows

Zara blinked against the harsh glow of a single dangling lightbulb. The room smelled of damp stone and cold metal. Panic clawed at her chest as she realized her hands were bound with rough rope, her legs shackled to a rusted pipe.

The memories of the past hours hit her like a thunderclap — the airport, the SUV, the betrayal… and then nothing. Until now.

She struggled against the ropes, testing their strength. Not much give. Not much hope. But hope, however small, was all she had.

A muffled conversation drifted through a cracked door. Two voices, low and urgent.

"…the letter is in her possession," one said.

"…the Ashes will rise soon. If she talks, it's all over…"

Zara's pulse quickened. The Ashes — the secret she had barely begun to understand — were bigger than she imagined. Bigger than anyone had warned her.

Her mind raced. She needed a plan. Escape seemed impossible, but doing nothing was worse. She shifted subtly, testing the chains, memorizing the room. A small vent near the ceiling caught her eye — barely wide enough for a hand.

Footsteps echoed in the hallway. Zara froze, holding her breath. The door creaked open, and a figure stepped inside.

She couldn't see the face clearly in the dim light. Friend or foe? Her instincts screamed danger, but curiosity clawed at her — maybe she could get information.

The figure paused, scanning the room. Zara's eyes narrowed. She had to act fast.

The figure moved closer, and just as Zara tensed to strike or speak, the door slammed shut behind them.

She was alone again — but she now knew one thing for certain: no one could be trusted. Not a single soul.

And in the silence, the rope bit into her wrists like a warning: the real game was just beginning.
