Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Shadows of the Past

The first light of dawn painted the horizon in bruised purples and golds, but Zara barely noticed. Her lungs burned, her legs ached, and every shadow seemed to whisper threats. The city behind her was still ablaze, the smoke curling into the sky like a warning she couldn't ignore.

She paused at the edge of the forest beyond the walls, chest heaving. That's when she saw him — a figure leaning casually against a tree, hood drawn low over his face.

"Zara," he said, his voice smooth, almost too calm. "I've been looking for you."

Zara's hand instinctively went to the dagger at her belt. "Who are you?" she demanded. "How do you know my name?"

"I know a lot more than you think," he replied, stepping closer. "And I know why they're after you."

Her eyes narrowed. Trust was a luxury she couldn't afford. Not now. Not ever.

"You don't know me," she said, tightening her grip. "I don't need help."

"Maybe you don't," he said, tilting his head. "But you will need answers. That letter you found… it changes everything."

Zara's mind flashed back to the letter, its elegant handwriting hiding threats she barely understood. Secrets that could destroy her family, secrets someone wanted silenced at any cost.

"Why should I trust you?" she spat.

He smiled faintly. "You don't. But you also don't have a choice. Follow me, or stay here and die. Your call."

The forest seemed to shift around her, every branch a potential trap. Every sound, a warning. She wanted to run, but the figure's eyes held a certainty she couldn't ignore.

Before she could decide, voices erupted behind her — shouting, urgent, closing in fast.

Zara's heart skipped. "They found me…" she whispered, grabbing the stranger's sleeve.

"Then we move," he said, already disappearing into the shadows.

With a deep breath, Zara followed — into the unknown, into danger, and into the secrets that could destroy her.

And somewhere in the distance, the fire of the city roared like a beast that wouldn't let her go.
