Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 — Cracks Beneath the SurfaceNight .

The city outside glowed with thousands of lights, traffic humming faintly in the distance. Normally evenings in their home were warm and loud—someone cooking, someone laughing, music playing somewhere in the background.

Tonight the atmosphere felt… different.

Not cold.

Just fragile.

Dinner had ended nearly an hour ago. Jin had retreated to the kitchen to wash the dishes, though Hoseok knew he mostly did it when he needed time to think.

Yoongi sat near the window with his headphones resting loosely around his neck, staring at a half-finished melody on his tablet.

Jungkook had disappeared into his room to finish some work.

Taehyung and Jimin were curled together on the couch, whispering quietly.

And Namjoon stood alone on the balcony.

Hoseok noticed everything.

He always did.

For years he had quietly kept the emotional balance between them—smoothing tension, comforting hurt feelings, making sure everyone felt included.

Tonight felt heavier than usual.

After a moment of hesitation, Hoseok stepped onto the balcony.

The cool night air brushed against his skin.

Namjoon turned when he heard the door slide open.

"Oh. Hobi."

Hoseok smiled softly and leaned against the railing beside him.

"You've been out here awhile."

Namjoon exhaled slowly.

"Just thinking."

"About the project?"

Namjoon nodded.

Silence stretched between them for a few seconds.

Below them, cars moved like streams of light through the city streets.

Finally Namjoon spoke again.

"I didn't expect this to upset everyone so much."

Hoseok shook his head gently.

"It didn't upset them."

Namjoon glanced at him.

"It definitely did."

"They're just scared."

Namjoon looked down at his hands.

"I hate that I'm the reason for that."

Hoseok studied him carefully.

"You're not the reason."

Namjoon looked confused.

"This situation is."

Namjoon sighed.

"I wish I could split myself in two sometimes."

Hoseok laughed quietly.

"That would make scheduling easier."

Namjoon smiled faintly, but the worry remained in his eyes.

"What do you think I should do?"

Hoseok leaned his elbows on the railing.

"You really want my honest opinion?"

"Always."

Hoseok thought for a moment.

"I think you deserve the chance to chase your dreams."

Namjoon blinked slightly.

"Even if it means leaving for months?"

"You're not abandoning us."

"But it will change things."

"Yes."

Namjoon watched him carefully.

"You're not angry."

"No."

"You're not jealous."

Hoseok hesitated.

"I didn't say that."

Namjoon frowned.

"Hobi…"

But before he could continue—

The balcony door suddenly slid open again.

Jimin stood there.

He hadn't meant to interrupt.

He'd only come to get water.

But the last thing he heard before opening the door was Hoseok saying:

"I think you should go."

Jimin froze.

Namjoon turned.

"Jimin—"

But Jimin had already stepped back inside.

The door slid shut again.

Inside the living room, Taehyung immediately noticed Jimin's expression.

"What happened?"

Jimin didn't answer right away.

His chest felt tight.

"Hobi thinks Namjoon should leave."

Taehyung blinked.

"What?"

"I heard them."

Taehyung sat up straighter.

"You're sure?"

Jimin nodded slowly.

"He said Namjoon should go."

Across the room Yoongi looked up.

"That's not exactly what he said."

Jimin frowned.

"You heard them too?"

"I heard part of it."

Jimin crossed his arms.

"Well I heard enough."

Taehyung's expression darkened slightly.

"So Hoseok is okay with this."

Yoongi sighed.

"You're both jumping to conclusions."

Jimin looked frustrated.

"Are we?"

At that moment Namjoon and Hoseok stepped back inside.

The tension in the room was immediate.

Hoseok noticed it instantly.

"What happened?"

Taehyung looked straight at him.

"You tell us."

Hoseok blinked.

"Tell you what?"

Jimin spoke quietly.

"You think Namjoon should leave."

Hoseok's eyes widened.

"What?"

"I heard you."

Namjoon stepped forward quickly.

"That's not what he meant—"

Jimin cut him off.

"Then what did he mean?"

Hoseok looked between them, confused.

"I said Namjoon deserves the chance to chase his dreams."

"That sounds like supporting him leaving."

"It's supporting his career."

Taehyung crossed his arms.

"So you're fine with him being gone for months?"

Hoseok hesitated.

"I didn't say that."

"But you told him to go."

Hoseok ran a hand through his hair.

"You're twisting my words."

Jimin's voice trembled slightly.

"Then explain them."

The room had grown tense.

Jungkook stepped out of the hallway, noticing the raised voices.

"What's going on?"

Taehyung answered bluntly.

"Hoseok wants Namjoon to take the project."

Jungkook frowned.

"That's not a crime."

"But it means he'll leave," Jimin replied.

Jin walked in from the kitchen, drying his hands.

"Why is everyone arguing?"

Yoongi leaned back in his chair.

"Miscommunication."

Namjoon looked frustrated.

"This isn't fair to Hoseok."

But Hoseok remained quiet.

He looked around the room at all of them.

Seven people.

And somehow the balance had shifted.

Jimin looked hurt.

Taehyung looked defensive.

Namjoon looked guilty.

Jungkook looked confused.

Jin looked concerned.

Yoongi looked tired.

And suddenly Hoseok felt something unfamiliar creeping into his chest.

Loneliness.

He spoke quietly.

"Do you all think I'm choosing Namjoon over you?"

No one answered immediately.

And that silence hurt more than any accusation.

Hoseok laughed softly.

"Wow."

Jin stepped forward quickly.

"Hobi, that's not what—"

"But it kind of is," Hoseok interrupted gently.

His voice wasn't angry.

Just tired.

"For years I've tried to keep everyone happy."

The room fell completely silent now.

"I listen when someone feels insecure. I mediate when arguments start. I make sure no one feels left out."

Jimin's expression softened slightly.

"Hobi—"

"But the moment I support someone's dream…" Hoseok continued, "…suddenly I'm the bad guy?"

Taehyung looked guilty.

"That's not what we meant."

Hoseok looked down at his hands.

"Sometimes I wonder what my role actually is here."

Namjoon's eyes widened.

"Hobi—"

"I'm not an alpha," Hoseok said quietly.

"I'm not an omega either."

He forced a small smile.

"I'm just the beta in the middle trying to keep everything balanced."

Jungkook frowned.

"You're more than that."

"Am I?"

Hoseok's voice remained calm, but the vulnerability was clear.

"Because tonight it kind of feels like I'm only useful when everyone else needs emotional support."

The words hung heavily in the air.

Jimin felt a sharp pang of guilt.

Taehyung looked down.

Namjoon stepped closer.

"You know that's not true."

Hoseok looked at him.

"Then why does it feel like I'm the only one trying to hold everything together?"

No one had an immediate answer.

The silence stretched.

Finally Yoongi spoke.

"We didn't realize you felt like that."

Hoseok exhaled slowly.

"I didn't realize it either."

Jimin stood up from the couch.

"Hobi… I'm sorry."

Taehyung nodded.

"We shouldn't have jumped to conclusions."

Jungkook rubbed the back of his neck.

"Yeah… we kind of escalated that fast."

Jin crossed his arms thoughtfully.

"We've been so focused on the project that we forgot something."

Hoseok looked at him.

"What?"

Jin smiled gently.

"There are seven hearts in this relationship."

Namjoon stepped closer to Hoseok.

"And yours matters just as much as anyone else's."

For the first time that evening, Hoseok felt the tightness in his chest ease slightly.

But the conversation wasn't over.

Not yet.

The real emotions had finally surfaced.

Now they had to face them together.

Because if tonight had proven anything…

It was that even the strongest relationships could develop cracks.

And it took all seven of them to keep the foundation strong.
