Roman found out about it the way he found out about most of Jay's ideas — at the moment it was already happening.
He came home on a Friday evening and the flat was empty. He checked the kitchen, the study, the bedroom. He was about to call Jay's phone when he noticed the rooftop access door at the end of the hallway was slightly open.
He went up.
The rooftop was a small space — not large, not landscaped, just a concrete terrace with a low wall around it and a view of the city in every direction. Jay had been up here before, occasionally, but Roman rarely used it.
Tonight there were string lights along the wall.
A blanket on one of the chairs.
Music coming from a small speaker Jay had brought up from somewhere.
And Jay himself standing near the wall looking out at the city with a glass of wine in his hand.
He turned when he heard the door.
"You're late," Jay said.
"I live here," Roman said.
