Chapter 14 - Ch.14. The Big Game

Alex never went back to TownPort High. He left town for good. News went round he was a part of Jake disappearance. Other formidable lies circulated in school and in the history of TownPort High; excellence had been achieved. Principal Dawson did not scrape the special library program either; she still used it as a reminder of the terrible past for the school.

Things seemed fine till Ivvy started losing it just like Jake and Jolie. One time while cheerleading she screamed and jumped off the shoulder of her team member claiming that someone pulled her down. It was kept away from principal Dawson until they heard a loud scream in the changing room. Some of the girls who were outside rushed in to see Ivvy sitting on tiny, shattered pieces of the glass from the large mirror hanging against the wall. A piece pierced the side of her face very close to her eyes.

She looked terrified like she had seen a ghost and she saw a ghost. Her story started to sound like Jake. Whenever she had an attack, she would say she saw Jake. Nobody believed her the same way they didn't believe him too.

One of the events that caught Dawson's attention was what happened after the mirror accident. She had gone for a few days without seeing strange things or hearing strange voices in her head. Dawson was doing everything within her power not to move Ivvy to the dumb soul community. The cheerleading squad brought her back for their next practice, only if they knew it would be the last time to be seen by anyone.

The current leader asked her if she would do the elevator stand for Jake's remembrance game and she was glad although being haunted by the same person as she assumed. They took positions; she started to climb slowly and steadily. It was fine and she was at the top well balanced. The group leader shouted "We go in 5,6,7…"

Ivvy lost balance; she was choking while on the elevator position. Before the people down could respond, she fell headfirst and snapped her neck immediately. Her facial expression was terrifying, her head face the opposite direction of her body, her eyes wide open. Ivvy died at the spot.

It threw the cheer leaders in chaos; they were screaming in horror at the sight of her death then the light went off for few seconds then flickered back on. Her body was gone; blood trails traced all the way to the entrance door of the cheer leaders' training court. Something dragged her body and like Jake, dead and missing.

Someone said in fear "Its 1995, again."

The Mayor's attention was drawn; the catalyst was not in the building. It was a futile effort in the end. TownPort High had become the capital for murder. Dawson knew it was about to escalate, but she had no idea who would trigger it. Emma got transferred the same week Ivvy passed. To honour the memories of Ivvy and Jake. A game was organized in their favour.

The court buzzed like a living thing as dusk settled in. Vendors shouted, cleats crunched on gravel, and the crowd rose to its feet when the players jogged onto the field. The scoreboard flashed the lineup, lights blazing white against the darkening sky. The first pitch was seconds away. This is a game to remember as TownPort High Cougar played against themselves.

The court went silent at the rise of principal Dawson's hand, signifying respect for the dead. In a few seconds, the silence broke. The speaker went wild; the crowd went wild. The game was about to start; the two teams were already positioned at opposite ends of the court.

Then everything went dark.

A collective gasp rippled through the stands as the floodlights snapped off at once. The scoreboard died mid-animation. Music cut short, leaving behind an eerie silence broken only by confused murmurs and a few nervous laughs.

Players froze where they stood; their uniforms now shadow against the field. They heard a flicker of light then the big screen turned on but it was static. Principal Dawson strained the screen. It came alive, just a dark room with a poor light source. There was no one on the screen, but they heard noises in the background.

Finally, someone dragged a chair and sat facing the screen. He wore a black shiny mask that hid the face including the eyes.

"Hello," He said, "you might remember me."

He adjusted the chair, then pointed to the darkness behind him.

"Do you see the darkness?" He asked. "That is where Jake and Ivvy went."

"Probably, where a bunch of you would be in the next few minutes" He added. He brought out the red ball from his pocket tossing it up and down. "I am the catalyst, or you can call me," he took off the mask revealing his face. "Alex"

"I was abused by the system, separated and called an outcast," he said angry still tossing the ball. They were scared; they knew what would happen if he eventually succumbed to the entity.

"I risked my life to save Jake, and I got l labeled a freak and rejected by principal Dawson." He affirmed as all eyes looked in her direction.

"I knew that the 1995 mystery took twenty children and no trace of them, but we were told seven" he said calmly. "Every time it attacked me, I refused to play because if I did,"

"I will unleash hell!" He shouted.

He looked back at the darkness, lurking behind him. "I got paid back in cruelty," He reminded his audience.

"I lost everything and I want to return the favour." He said, smiling at the camera. "Welcome to 1995 once again."

He rolled the ball into the darkness.
