Chapter 86 - The Weight of Truth

Three days since we returned with the dagger.

Three days of celebrations, planning, and—for me—haunted nights. The visions wouldn't stop. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw him. The young man desperate to save his world. The lover promising to return. The centuries of loneliness twisting him into something unrecognizable.

Mei Lian felt it through the bond. Held me when I woke gasping. Said nothing—just was there.

On the fourth morning, I sought out Oracle.

---

The Conversation

She waited in her chambers, as if expecting me.

"The visions continue."

"Every night. His past. His pain. His... humanity."

Oracle nodded slowly. "The dagger shows truth to those worthy of carrying it. You're seeing what he was—what he could have been."

"Why? What good does that do?"

She studied me with ancient eyes.

"Because you can't defeat what you don't understand. And you can't save what you refuse to see." She gestured for me to sit. "Tell me what you've witnessed."

I told her everything. The young man. Serena. The first god he killed—not in hatred, but desperation. The slow corruption. The love that never died, just buried.

When I finished, Oracle was quiet for a long moment.

"He wasn't always evil. None of us are. We become what circumstances make us—and what we choose despite them."

"He chose this. Chose to become a monster."

"Yes. But he also chose to preserve Serena. To hide her where no one could find her. To keep her safe, even from himself." She met my eyes. "That choice—that love—it's still there. Buried. Waiting."

"For what?"

"For someone to remind him it exists."

The Council

I called them together that evening.

Twelve gods. Mortal leaders from a dozen worlds. My team—Darius, Lyra, Vera, Sarah. Mei Lian beside me. Theron, still recovering but present, Solara at his side.

"I've been seeing visions. From the dagger." I held it up. "The first immortal's past. His love for Serena. His humanity."

Murmurs rippled through the room.

Theron spoke. "Why show you this?"

"Because I need to understand. We all do." I looked at each of them. "We're not fighting a monster. We're fighting a man who became one. And somewhere inside him, that man still exists."

Selene's voice was cold. "Even if true—what does it change?"

"Everything." I set the dagger on the table. "If we can reach him—if we can remind him of what he lost—we might not need to destroy him."

Silence.

Mira broke it. "You're suggesting we try to save him?"

"I'm suggesting we try. If it fails—if there's nothing left to save—then we fight. But we owe it to Serena. To the man he was. To ourselves."

Darius shook his head. "That's insane."

"Probably."

"He's killed millions. Billions. Destroyed countless worlds."

"I know."

"And you want to offer him redemption?"

I met his eyes. "I want to offer him a choice. The same choice we all have. Every day."

Silence stretched.

Then Vera spoke quietly. "I was a slave. The Network broke me, used me, made me into something I hated. When Ren found me, he didn't offer judgment. He offered a choice." She looked at Darius. "That choice saved me."

Darius stared at her. Then at me.

"You're really going to do this."

"I'm really going to try."

He shook his head. But he was almost smiling.

"You're insane. But you're also... you."

The Gods' Reactions

After the council, the gods gathered separately.

Mira found me alone on the shore.

"They're struggling," she said. "Selene most of all. She's lost more than most to the first immortal."

"Can she accept this?"

"I don't know. But I know she trusts you." Mira sat beside me. "They all do, Ren. Even when they argue, even when they doubt—they trust you."

"Why?"

"Because you've never lied to them. Never used them. Never asked them to be anything but what they are." She smiled. "That's rare among mortals. Rarer among gods."

I looked at the stars—at worlds I'd never see, lives I'd never touch.

"What if I'm wrong? What if there's nothing left to save?"

"Then you fight. And we fight with you." She touched my cheek. "But you won't know until you try."

---

Selene's Doubt

I found her later, alone in her frozen corner of the temple.

"You're avoiding me."

"I'm avoiding everyone." Her voice was ice. "It's easier."

"Easier isn't better."

She turned—slowly, deliberately. Her eyes held centuries of pain.

"I lost everything to him. My temple, my followers, my sister. She was the last of our kind—a goddess of winter's heart. He killed her. Absorbed her power. Used it to freeze worlds."

"I didn't know."

"No one knows. I don't speak of it." Her cold intensified. "And now you want me to help save him?"

"I want you to consider that the man who did those things wasn't always that man. That somewhere beneath the monster, someone worth saving might exist."

"And if he doesn't?"

"Then we fight. With everything we have. And I'll be beside you."

She stared at me for a long moment.

Then, slowly, the cold softened.

"You really believe that. In redemption."

"I have to. Otherwise, what's the point of any of this?"

Selene was quiet. Then, almost imperceptibly, nodded.

"I'll try. For you. Not for him."

"That's enough."

The Plan

Two days later, we had a strategy.

Phase one: Find Serena. Oracle had located her—the garden between worlds, hidden for centuries. Cassian was already there, waiting.

Phase two: Bring her to the first immortal. Use their love as a bridge.

Phase three: Offer him a choice. Redemption or destruction.

"If he chooses destruction?" Selene asked.

"Then we fight. With everything."

"And if he chooses redemption?"

I looked at the dagger. At the visions it held.

"Then we build something new. Together."

---

Departure

Dawn came cold and clear.

I stood at the portal with my team—Mei Lian beside me, Cassian's coordinates guiding us. Behind us, the alliance gathered, hoping, waiting.

Darius clapped my shoulder. "Don't die."

"Wasn't planning on it."

Lyra hugged me—brief, fierce. "Bring them home."

Vera nodded silently. Sarah waved through her screen.

The gods stood in a line—twelve beings of immense power, watching us go.

Mira stepped forward. "Remember: you're not alone. You never were."

I looked at Mei Lian. She squeezed my hand.

"Together?"

"Together."

We stepped through.
