Chapter 87 - The Garden

The portal deposited us in twilight.

Not darkness—something softer. Eternal twilight, golden and pink and purple blending into colors that shouldn't exist. The air smelled of flowers I'd never seen and peace I'd forgotten.

Mei Lian gasped beside me. "It's beautiful."

"It's impossible."

Cassian waited at the garden's edge, his ancient face soft with something like hope.

"You came."

"We came." I studied him—this immortal who'd chosen change. "Serena?"

"Waiting. She's always waiting."

He led us through paths lined with glowing flowers, past trees that sang in breezes, beside streams that flowed with liquid light. The garden existed outside time, outside conflict, outside everything.

At its heart, a woman knelt among roses.

Serena.

She looked up as we approached—and I understood, suddenly, why the first immortal had loved her. Not her beauty, though that was real. Something deeper. Presence. Like standing beside a fire on a cold night.

"Ren." Her voice was music. "I've waited so long."

I knelt before her—not from submission, but from respect. "You know why I'm here."

"To save him. To give him a choice." She smiled—sad, hopeful, ancient. "I've dreamed of this moment for centuries."

Mei Lian knelt beside me. "We'll do everything we can."

Serena looked at her. Saw something that made her eyes widen.

"A soul-bond. Rare. Precious." She touched Mei Lian's face. "You love him completely."

"With everything."

"Good. That love will be needed."

The Story

We sat in the garden for hours—or days. Time had no meaning here.

Serena told us everything.

Her childhood in a village long crumbled. Meeting a young man named Darian—brilliant, passionate, desperate to save his dying world. Their love, fierce and pure. His promise to return with power to protect everyone.

The day he left.

The centuries that followed. Watching from afar as he changed, as the Network grew, as the boy she loved became something unrecognizable.

"I should have stopped him," she whispered. "Should have tried."

"You couldn't have."

"Maybe. But I could have tried." Tears fell. "Instead, I hid. Preserved his soul—the part that was still him—and waited."

Cassian spoke quietly. "You did more than anyone. You kept hope alive."

Serena looked at him. "As you kept your Elara alive. In memory. In love."

He touched the locket. Nodded.

I leaned forward. "The preserved soul. Where is it?"

Serena reached into the folds of her dress. Drew out a crystal—small, glowing, alive.

"Here. A piece of him. The part that loved me. The part that could have been good."

I stared at it. Felt its warmth. Its longing.

"When we face him—"

"Show him this. Remind him what he was. What he could be again." She pressed it into my hands. "It's all I have left of him. All I've kept for centuries."

"I'll guard it with my life."

"I know." She smiled. "That's why I'm giving it to you."

Cassian's Gift

After Serena rested, Cassian pulled me aside.

"There's something else. Something I haven't told anyone." He touched the locket. "Elara—my love—she was a healer. Before the Network, before everything. She taught me things."

"Like what?"

"How to reach someone buried so deep they've forgotten themselves." He met my eyes. "When you face him—when you show him the crystal—I can help. Use what she taught me to find the man beneath the monster."

"You'd do that? After everything?"

"I've done terrible things, Ren. Unforgivable things." Tears filled his ancient eyes. "But maybe—just maybe—helping save him will balance something. Will let me rest."

I clasped his shoulder. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet. Thank me if it works."

Mei Lian and Serena

I found them later, walking among the flowers.

"—never thought I'd find someone," Serena was saying. "After him, after everything... I assumed I'd be alone forever."

Mei Lian nodded. "I know that feeling. Before Ren, I was... frozen. Not cold like Selene—just waiting. For something I couldn't name."

"And then?"

"And then he walked into my life. Stubborn, impossible, hopeful. Changed everything."

Serena smiled. "That's what love does. Changes everything."

They walked in comfortable silence for a moment.

"You'll need that love," Serena said quietly. "When you face him. It will remind me why I'm fighting."

"We'll be ready."

The Vision That Night

I dreamed in the garden.

Not my dreams—Serena's. I saw Darian as she remembered him. Young. Laughing. Holding her under stars.

"I'll come back," he promised. "With power to save everyone. And then we'll never be apart again."

"I'll wait. Forever if I have to."

"It won't be forever. I swear."

Centuries passed in moments. Serena waiting. Watching. Hoping.

Then the crystal. The preserved soul. The part of him that never stopped loving her.

"Come back to me," she whispered. "Please. Come back."

I woke with tears on my face.

Mei Lian held me. Said nothing. Just was there.

Departure

Three days in the garden. Three days of preparation, of learning, of hope.

On the third morning, Serena stood with us at the garden's edge.

"I can't come with you. Not yet. When you face him—when you show him the crystal—I'll feel it. And I'll come."

Cassian nodded. "I'll guide them. Protect them."

Serena embraced him. "Thank you, Cassian. For choosing to remember."

He held her tight. "Thank you for reminding me I could."

Then she turned to me. Pressed something into my hands—a flower, glowing softly.

"A piece of the garden. Of me. When you need hope, hold it."

I pocketed it beside Mira's stone. "I will."

"Go now. He's waiting. They're all waiting."

We stepped toward the portal.

"Ren." Serena's voice stopped me. "Whatever happens—thank you. For believing in him. For believing in me."

I looked at this woman who'd waited centuries. Who'd loved without ceasing. Who'd kept hope alive when everything tried to kill it.

"Thank you. For never giving up."

We stepped through.
