Chapter 85 - The Guardian

The Guardian moved.

Not fast—impossible to track. Not slow—impossible to escape. It simply was, everywhere at once, presence pressing against us like the weight of oceans.

I raised my hands. Blessings blazed.

Mei Lian moved beside me, bond singing. Selene's cold spread. Ignis's fire crackled. Noctis's shadows writhed.

The Guardian regarded us with ancient eyes.

"Twelve blessings. A soul-bond. Cold and fire and shadow." Its voice held something almost like respect. "You've come far, mortals and gods. Farther than any before you."

"We're not stopping here."

"No. You never do." The Guardian tilted its head. "That's why I was created. To stop those who never stop."

It attacked.

---

The First Exchange

Selene met it first.

Ice erupted between us—a wall of absolute cold that should have frozen anything. The Guardian passed through like it wasn't there.

Ignis followed. Fire so intense the air itself burned. The Guardian walked through flames untouched.

Noctis's shadows wrapped around it, seeking purchase, finding none.

I struck with everything—fire, water, steam, light. Twelve blessings channeled through the dagger's guidance.

The Guardian absorbed it all.

"You cannot hurt me." Its voice was calm. "I was made from his guilt. From the weight of every life he took. You cannot destroy what you cannot understand."

Mei Lian stepped forward. "Then help us understand."

The Guardian paused.

"Understand what?"

"Why you guard this dagger. Why you protect something that could hurt him." She met its ancient eyes. "You're not his servant. You're his conscience."

The Guardian was silent for a long moment.

Then, slowly, it smiled.

"No one has ever seen that. Not in all the centuries." It looked at Mei Lian with something like wonder. "You're right. I am his guilt made manifest. The part of him that remembers every death, every world, every scream. I guard the dagger because I want it to be used—and fear what happens if it is."

"Fear what?"

"That killing him won't end the pain. That his death will unleash something worse." The Guardian's form flickered. "I was created to stop those who would destroy him. But I was also created to hope someone would."

I stepped forward. "We're not here to destroy him."

"No?"

"No. We're here to give him a choice. Redemption or destruction. His love—Serena—waits for him. She's preserved his original soul."

The Guardian's eyes widened.

"Serena lives?"

"She lives. She waits. She believes in him."

The Guardian was quiet for so long I thought it wouldn't answer.

Then, slowly, it stepped aside.

"Take the dagger. Use it wisely." Its voice was softer now. "And if you succeed—if you reach him—tell him... tell him I'm sorry. For all of it."

"For what?"

"For not being enough. For never being able to stop him." The Guardian began to fade. "Tell him his guilt remembers. And his guilt forgives."

It vanished.

The Dagger

I approached the pedestal alone.

The dagger waited—simple, ancient, alive. It hummed with power I could feel across the chamber.

I reached for it.

The moment my fingers touched the hilt, visions exploded.

The first immortal as a young man. Desperate. Hopeful. Human.

Serena's face, radiant with love.

Their last moment together—his promise to return, her tears, his departure.

The first god he killed. Not in rage—in desperation. His world was dying. The gods refused to help. He took power to save his people.

It worked. Briefly.

Then the corruption began. Slowly at first. Then faster. Then unstoppable.

Through it all, Serena's face haunted him. Her love. Her hope. Her waiting.

He buried it. Forgot it. Became something else.

But the love never died. Just slept.

I gasped. Came back to myself.

Mei Lian caught me. "Ren!"

"I'm okay." I held up the dagger. "We have it."

Cheers—quiet, exhausted, triumphant.

But I couldn't shake what I'd seen.

The first immortal wasn't just a monster.

He was a man who'd lost everything.

And somewhere, buried beneath centuries of darkness, that man still existed.

The Escape

Getting out was easier.

The Guardian's fall had disrupted the vault's defenses. Immortals scrambled confusedly. Patrols missed us by moments.

We reached the portal with hours to spare.

Oracle waited on the other side, face breaking into a smile when she saw the dagger.

"You did it."

"We did it."

She looked at me—really looked.

"What else did you find?"

I thought about the visions. About the Guardian's words. About Serena waiting in her garden.

"Hope," I said. "I found hope."

---

Return

The alliance greeted us like heroes.

Darius crushed me in a hug. Lyra actually cried. Vera smiled—rare and precious. Sarah cheered through her screen.

Even the gods seemed lighter.

Selene stood apart, cold but satisfied. Ignis's flames burned bright. Noctis melted into shadows, exhausted but triumphant.

Mei Lian never left my side.

That night, in our quarters, she held me as the visions returned.

"Tell me," she whispered. "Tell me what you saw."

I told her everything.

The first immortal's humanity. His love. His slow corruption. The part of him that still existed, buried deep.

When I finished, she was quiet for a long moment.

"Then we save him. Or we try."

"Just like that?"

"Just like that." She kissed me. "That's what we do. We try."
