Chapter 84 - The Vault Approaches

The void pressed against us like a living thing.

Not cold—though it should have been. Not dark—though no light existed. Something else. Something that made my blessings hum with constant warning.

Five figures moved through nothing: me, Mei Lian, Selene, Ignis, Noctis. Bound by purpose, driven by hope, held together by trust forged in fire.

"How much further?" Ignis's voice carried an edge of impatience.

Noctis consulted shadows that shouldn't exist here. "Close. The vault senses us. It's... adjusting."

Selene's cold sharpened. "Adjusting how?"

"Defenses activating. Traps setting. Guardians waking." Noctis's form flickered. "It knows we're coming."

I looked at my team. At the woman beside me.

"Then we stop being subtle."

---

The Vault Emerges

It materialized from void like a wound given form.

Massive. Dark. Wrong. Walls that absorbed light. Spires that pierced dimensions. An energy barrier that hummed with enough power to vaporize armies.

Selene studied it. "The barrier first. I can freeze sections, create gaps."

Ignis nodded. "I'll follow with fire—keep their attention divided."

Noctis added, "Shadows will hide you through the gaps. But once inside... you're on your own."

Mei Lian squeezed my hand. The bond carried her fear—and her resolve.

"We're ready."

I looked at each of them. "We do this together. We come back together. Understood?"

Nods all around.

"Move."

---

The Barrier

Selene's cold was beautiful to watch.

Frost spread across the energy barrier in patterns like frozen lightning. Where it touched, the hum faltered—just slightly, just enough. Gaps appeared, flickering, unstable.

"NOW!" Selene's voice strained.

Ignis moved.

Fire erupted—not at the barrier, but around it. Massive explosions drew the attention of every guardian, every sensor, every eye within the vault. They turned toward the light, away from us.

Noctis wrapped us in shadows.

We slipped through the gap.

Inside

The vault's interior was worse than its exterior.

Corridors that stretched impossibly. Walls that breathed. Floors that shifted beneath our feet. And everywhere—everywhere—the sense of being watched.

Noctis guided us through shadows. "This way. The dagger's at the heart."

We moved fast, silent, terrified.

Mei Lian stayed close. The bond hummed with constant awareness—her location, her emotions, her love. It was the only thing keeping me grounded.

A corridor opened before us. Guarded.

Twenty immortals. Maybe more. Standing sentinel outside massive doors.

Selene's whisper: "Too many to fight quietly."

Ignis: "Too many to fight at all."

Noctis: "Then we don't fight. We wait."

"For what?"

"Their shift change. Fifteen minutes. Then a gap."

I checked my team. "Can we hold here that long?"

Selene's cold spread around us, hiding our presence. "We can try."

---

The Wait

Fifteen minutes. Felt like fifteen years.

The immortals didn't move. Didn't speak. Didn't show any sign of being anything but statues. But their eyes—their eyes scanned constantly, missing nothing.

Mei Lian's hand found mine in the darkness. Squeezed.

Almost there, the bond seemed to say. Almost.

I squeezed back.

Then—movement. A new squad approaching. Words exchanged. The old guards leaving, new ones taking position.

And in that moment of transition, a gap.

Noctis moved. We followed.

Through the doors. Into the heart.

---

The Chamber

It was vast. Vaster than anything I'd imagined.

And at its center, on a pedestal of solidified darkness, the dagger waited.

Simple. Ancient. Alive.

I could feel it from across the chamber—humming with power, with memory, with the weight of everything it had witnessed.

But between us and it, something else waited.

The Guardian.

It rose from the floor like a nightmare given form. Tall. Pale. Eyes that held no emotion—or too many emotions, impossible to read.

"I am the Guardian." Its voice was everywhere. "You may not pass."

Selene's cold sharpened. "We don't want to fight you."

"Then leave."

"We can't."

The Guardian sighed—a sound like worlds ending.

"Then you will die."
