Chapter 11 - The Wrong Choice That Felt Right

Dawn came clear. First day without rain in a week.

Elara was waiting outside. Packed bag at her feet. Two horses ready.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"Town." She mounted her horse with surprising ease for someone her age. "You've learned basics. Now you need supplies. Better stone. Better focus. Better understanding of what you're actually training for."

I climbed onto my horse. Slightly better than last time. Only almost fell once.

We rode toward Millbrook.

But halfway there, Elara stopped.

"Someone's following us."

I looked back. Saw nothing.

"Stay on the horse. Don't move. Don't use magic unless I say." She dismounted. Drew something from her belt—not a sword, something else. "If it's bandits, I'll handle it. If it's worse..."

She didn't finish.

The trees rustled.

Something stepped out.

Not bandits.

Not corrupted.

A wolf. But wrong. Too big. Eyes that glowed faintly green. Fur matted with something dark.

Behind it, another. Then another.

Five of them.

[COMBAT ALERT]

Hostiles: 5x Forest Wolves (Corrupted)

Threat Level: Moderate (Elara present)

Threat Level to You: Extreme (alone)

Elara's Order: Do not use magic.

The wolves circled.

Elara stood motionless. Waiting.

One lunged.

She moved so fast I couldn't track. Something flashed. The wolf fell. Not dead—crippled. Deliberate.

The others hesitated.

"Ren," Elara said calmly. "When I say run, you ride. Don't look back. Don't stop. Millbrook. Garret's contact. Wait there."

"What about you?"

"I'll catch up. Or I won't. Either way, you survive."

[CHOICE]

A. Obey. Ride. Survive. (Smart, safe, follows orders)

B. Stay. Watch. Learn. (Risky, but potential insight)

C. Use magic to help. (Disobey direct order, but could change outcome)

D. Try to call the wolves' attention away. (Suicidal, but protects Elara)

The wolves circled. Five of them. Too big. Eyes glowing green. Fur matted with something dark that dripped when they moved.

One had already fallen—crippled, not dead. Elara's work. She moved like nothing I'd ever seen.

But four remained. And they were learning.

"Run," Elara said. "Now."

The old me would have run.

The old me would have followed orders. Survived. Lived to fight another day.

The old me died in a car crash because he couldn't make a choice.

I made one.

[CHOICE: C + D. Use magic to help AND draw their attention.]

I didn't ride.

I dismounted.

Elara's head whipped toward me. "What are you—"

I ran toward the wolves.

Not at them. Around them. Flanking. Stupid. Reckless. My seven-year-old legs pumping, my heart screaming, my spark blazing in my chest.

One wolf noticed. Turned. Green eyes locked on me.

Good. Look at me. Not her.

I raised my hand.

Fire. Heat. Push.

Flame Spark ignited in my palm. Small. Flickering. Pathetic compared to Elara's flashing blade.

But fire.

The wolf hesitated. Fire meant danger. Fire meant pain.

I threw it.

The flame shot forward—wild, uncontrolled, barely aimed. It caught the wolf's shoulder. Fur ignited. The wolf screamed.

Then it charged.

Directly at me.

Good. Working. Too well.

I ran.

Not away—around. Leading it away from Elara. Giving her room to handle the other three.

The wolf chased. Fast. Too fast. I felt its breath. Heard its claws tearing earth.

Faster. Faster—

My foot caught a root.

I fell.

The wolf was on me in an instant. Green eyes inches from my face. Jaw opening. Teeth—

Something hit it from the side.

Elara.

She'd killed the other three already. Already. And now she was here, blade buried in the wolf's ribs, pushing it off me with strength that made no sense for someone her age.

The wolf twitched. Died.

Elara stood over me, breathing hard, eyes burning.

"You absolute idiot."

I lay on the ground, shaking, alive, staring up at her.

"Did it work?"

She stared at me for a long, terrible moment.

Then she laughed.

Not a nice laugh. Not a warm laugh. A laugh of pure disbelief.

"Seven years old. No training. No weapon. And you ran toward the wolves to draw them away from me." She grabbed my arm. Yanked me up. "That's the stupidest, bravest thing I've ever seen."

"Is that good?"

"No. But it's something." She looked me over. Checking for wounds. Found none. "You're not hurt?"

"I fell. Before it got me."

"Lucky."

"Maybe." I touched my chest. Where the spark still burned. "Or maybe I'm learning to choose fast enough that luck has something to work with."

Elara stared at me.

Then she shook her head. Grabbed my shoulder. Steered me toward the horses.

"We're going to Millbrook. You're getting supplies. Then we're going back to training. And you're never, ever disobeying a direct order again."

"Yes, Elara."

"I mean it."

"I know."

"Next time I say run, you run."

"Unless running is the wrong choice."

She stopped. Turned me to face her.

"Ren. Listen to me. You have potential. Real potential. But potential dies fast when its owner dies. You understand?"

I understood.

But I also understood something else.

"If I'd run, you might have been hurt. Or worse. I couldn't just... let that happen. Not when I could help."

Elara's expression shifted. Just slightly. Something behind her eyes.

"Who taught you to think like that?"

"Mira. Garret. Vex." I shrugged. "You. All of you keep giving me chances. Kept not letting me die. Figured I should return the favor."

She was quiet for a long moment.

Then she turned. Walked to her horse. Mounted.

"Get on your horse, Ren. We're wasting daylight."

I climbed on. Only fell once.

We rode toward Millbrook in silence.

But the silence felt different. Lighter.

Elara now sees you as: A student who might actually surpass her. If you survive your own stupidity.

---

Millbrook was bigger than I remembered.

Or maybe I just saw it differently now. Two weeks of training changed how I saw everything.

People moved through streets. Shops lined the main road. A blacksmith's hammer rang in the distance. Smells of bread, meat, smoke.

Elara led us to a small building near the center. No sign. Just a wooden door and shuttered windows.

"Wait here." She dismounted. Knocked three times. Paused. Knocked twice.

The door opened a crack. A face appeared—old, male, suspicious.

Elara spoke too quietly for me to hear. The face glanced at me. Nodded. The door opened wider.

"Bring the boy."

I dismounted. Followed.

Inside, the building was one room. Shelves everywhere. Packed with things I didn't recognize—stones, bottles, dried plants, bones, scrolls, metal objects with no obvious purpose.

The old man—bald, scarred, one hand missing two fingers—looked me over.

"This is the one?"

"Yes."

"He's seven."

"Yes."

"He ran at wolves."

A pause. The old man looked at Elara. Then at me. Then back at Elara.

"You're sure?"

"He's sure." Elara's voice was flat. "Show him the vault."

The old man grunted. Turned. Limped toward a back wall. Pressed something. A section of shelving slid sideways, revealing stone steps leading down.

"Follow. Touch nothing. Steal nothing. Die nowhere."

I looked at Elara. She nodded.

I followed.

---

The basement was bigger than the building above.

Torches on walls. More shelves. But these held different things. Better things. Things that hummed.

The old man led me to a table in the center. On it: three objects.

A stone. Deep blue. Pulsing faintly.

A ring. Simple iron. Unremarkable.

A small pouch, tied with leather string.

"Choose one," the old man said. "Elara's credit. One only."

[VAULT ACCESS]

Choose One Item:

[OPTION A: DEEPSTONE]

· Effect: Increases mana capacity. Improves water magic affinity.

· Note: Rare. Valuable. Obvious.

[OPTION B: IRON BAND]

· Effect: Subtle focus aid. Helps with concentration during combat.

· Note: Unremarkable looking. Easy to hide. Defensive.

[OPTION C: BINDING POUCH]

· Effect: Small storage space. Holds more inside than outside.

· Note: Extremely rare. Utility-focused. Non-combat.

[OPTION D: ASK FOR SOMETHING ELSE]

· Effect: Unknown. Depends on what you request.

· Note: Risky. May annoy the keeper. May find something perfect.

---

I looked at the three items.

The deepstone would help immediately. More mana. Better water magic. Practical.

The ring would help in fights. Stay calm. Focus. Useful when wolves charged.

The pouch... storage. Not combat. But rare. And in my old life, I'd learned that utility often beat power.

But I also remembered something. Mira's words: The path reveals itself to those who walk it.

I wasn't just a mage. I wasn't just a fighter. I was someone who remembered things. Someone who used physics to move water. Someone who ran toward wolves.

What did I need?
