Chapter 16 - The Academy Arrival

Dawn came with horses.

I woke before first light, already dressed, already packed. The cottage was quiet. Elara's door still closed.

I stood by the fire one last time. The place where I'd eaten my first real meal in this world. Where Mira's soup had warmed me. Where I'd learned to read, to fight, to push beyond breaking.

Three months. From starving orphan to academy student.

The old me would have cried. Probably did cry, somewhere inside.

The new me just nodded at the fire and walked outside.

Corvin rode alone this time. No guards. No ceremony. Just him and a spare horse. The animal looked at me with the same expression as every horse I'd met—mild contempt.

"Ready?" he asked.

I looked back at the cottage.

Elara stood in the doorway. Watching.

She didn't wave. Didn't smile. Didn't say goodbye.

But she nodded. Just once.

I nodded back.

Mounted the spare horse. Only fell once.

We rode.

The cottage shrank behind me. Trees swallowed it. Then hills. Then distance. Then nothing but road ahead.

---

Hours Later

"Nervous?" Corvin asked.

"Yes."

"Good. Nervous keeps you alive." He glanced at me, assessing. "The academy is not like Elara's cottage. It's not like anything you've experienced. Noble children who'll hate you on sight. Teachers who'll test you constantly. Politics in every hallway."

"I know."

"You don't. But you'll learn." He paused, adjusting his reins. "One piece of advice. Free, since I like you."

I waited.

"Find allies. Not friends—allies. People who'll watch your back because it benefits them. In the academy, alone means dead. Not physically always. But dead. Your career. Your reputation. Your future."

I nodded. Stored it away.

"Also—" Corvin's voice shifted, almost amused. "—Elara mentioned you have... interests. Beyond magic."

I blinked. "What?"

"Girls. Money. The usual vices." He shrugged. "Nothing wrong with it. Just don't let them control you. The academy is full of beautiful people who'll use you. Full of opportunities to spend coin you don't have. Keep your head clear."

I felt my face heat. "She told you that?"

"She said, and I quote: 'The boy's got talent and drive. He also likes pretty girls and shiny coins. Make sure he doesn't die because of either.'" Corvin grinned. "She cares about you. In her own terrifying way."

I didn't know what to say.

So I said nothing. Rode on. Thought about Elara actually noticing that about me.

She paid attention. Even to the parts I didn't show.

Afternoon: First Sight of Valdris

The city rose from the plains like a dream.

Walls first—massive, grey, stretching farther than I could see. Then towers behind them. Spires. Domes. Smoke from countless chimneys. The glint of windows catching sun.

I'd seen cities before. In my old life. Chicago. New York. Places that scraped the sky.

This was different.

This was old. Ancient. Built by hands that believed in permanence. Stone that would outlast empires.

"Valdris," Corvin said. "Capital of the region. Home to fifty thousand. And there—" He pointed. "—the academy."

I followed his finger.

On a hill overlooking the city, separate from the walls, stood a complex of buildings that made everything else look small. Towers of white stone. Gardens cascading down slopes. Walls that shimmered faintly—magic, I realized. Protective enchantments.

"That's... big."

"That's the smallest part. You'll spend years exploring and still find new corners." He kicked his horse forward. "Come. We're expected."

We rode through city gates. Past guards who nodded at Corvin, ignored me. Into streets packed with people, noise, smells—bread and smoke and animals and something sweet I couldn't name.

I stared at everything. Tried to memorize. Tried to observe.

Allies. Need allies. Need to understand who's who.

But first—

"The library," I said. "Does the academy have a library?"

Corvin laughed. "Kid, their library is bigger than most towns. You'll get lost in it for weeks."

Good. That was exactly where I wanted to be.

---

Sunset: Academy Gates

The academy walls were taller up close. White stone, gold veining, gates of dark wood reinforced with iron. Guards in uniforms I didn't recognize. Students passing through—older, younger, all carrying themselves like they belonged.

I felt their eyes on me as we approached.

Small. Young. Common clothes. Riding a horse like I'd learned last week.

Observe. Don't react. Watch everything.

We dismounted. Corvin spoke to a guard. Paperwork exchanged. Nods.

Then the gates opened.

I walked through.

Corvin led me through courtyards and corridors. Students stared. Whispered. I caught fragments:

"—that young?"

"—commoner, look at his clothes—"

"—scout find another orphan?"

"—waste of space—"

I kept my face neutral. Kept walking. Kept watching.

Allies. Need allies. Who looks like they don't fit? Who looks like they need something?

We passed a girl my age, maybe older. Dark hair. Sharp eyes. Standing alone by a pillar, watching students pass with an expression I recognized.

Loneliness. Hidden behind cold.

She glanced at me. Just for a second. Then away.

I filed her face away.

---

Evening: The Library

Corvin left me at the dormitory. Small room. Single bed. Desk. Window overlooking a courtyard.

"Orientation tomorrow. Someone will fetch you." He paused at the door. "First night rule: don't wander restricted areas. You'll know them because they're marked. Or because you'll die trying to enter."

He left.

I dropped my bag. Sat on the bed. Breathed.

Made it. First step done.

Then I stood up. Walked to the door.

Library now. Before anything else. Before allies. Before classes. Know where knowledge lives.

I found it by following older students. Listening to conversations. Piecing together directions.

Twenty minutes later, I stood in front of the largest building I'd ever seen.

The academy library.

Five floors. Endless windows. Doors wide enough for ten people abreast.

I walked in.

And stopped.

Shelves stretched in every direction. Hundreds. Thousands. More books than I'd seen in my entire life combined. Scrolls in cases. Maps on walls. Reading lamps glowing with soft magic.

A librarian approached—old woman, sharp glasses, sharper eyes.

"First time?"

"Yes."

"Rules: No food. No fire. No loud noises. No removing certain texts—they're chained for a reason. Hours are posted. Questions cost nothing; stupidity costs everything."

I nodded. "Where do I start?"

She studied me. "What do you want to learn?"

Everything. But start small.

"Academy politics. Noble families. Who matters and who doesn't."

Her eyebrow rose. "Smart. Section three, east wing. Second floor." She turned away. "Don't steal."

I found Section Three.

Read until midnight.

[LIBRARY ACCESS UNLOCKED]

Section Three (Politics & Society): Basic understanding of noble families acquired.

Key Families Identified:

· House Valerius: Current power holders. Old money. Dangerous.

· House Corvus: Military background. Rising influence. Unpredictable.

· House Ashford: Corvin's family. Scouts and spies. Neutral brokers.

· House Venn: Merchant nobility. New money. Despised by old families.

Night: First Encounter

I was walking back to the dormitory, head full of names and alliances, when I heard voices.

Arguing. Young. Angry.

I slowed. Stayed in shadows.

Two figures in a courtyard. One I recognized—the girl from earlier, dark hair, sharp eyes. The other was a boy, older, taller, wearing better clothes.

"—don't belong here," he was saying. "Your family bought their way in. Everyone knows."

The girl's face stayed cold. "My family earned their place. Your family inherited theirs. Tell me which is more pathetic."

The boy's hand shot out. Grabbed her wrist.

"You'll regret that."

I stepped out of shadows.

"Let her go."

Both turned. Stared.

The boy—maybe twelve, rich clothes, sneer already perfected—looked me up and down.

"Another commoner? Did they open the gates to beggars today?"

I didn't answer. Just looked at his hand on her wrist.

"Let her go. Or I'll make you."

He laughed. "You? You're seven. You're nothing."

The girl's eyes met mine. Warning me to leave. Protecting me from him, even while he held her.

I remembered wolves. Running toward them. Elara's voice: You absolute idiot.

Some things don't change.

I raised my hand. Spark kindled.

"I said let her go."

The boy's eyes widened. Just for a second. He'd heard about commoner magic. Never seen it.

He let go.

"This isn't over." He backed away. Looked at the girl. "Your family's days are numbered. And you—" He pointed at me. "—just made an enemy."

He disappeared into the darkness.

I let the spark die. Turned to the girl.

"You okay?"

She stared at me. Long. Hard.

"You're insane."

"Probably."

"That was Marcus Valerius. His family runs half the academy."

"I don't know what that means yet. But I'll learn."

She kept staring. Then, slowly, her expression shifted. Just slightly.

"I'm Lyra." Pause. "Venn."

House Venn. Merchant nobility. The family the old nobles despised.

New money. Despised. Looking for allies.

I held out my hand.

"Ren. Just Ren."

She looked at my hand. At my face. At the spot where Marcus had stood.

"You need friends, Just Ren."

"So do you."

She took my hand.
