Chapter 15 - The Accelerated Path

Corvin waited.

Elara waited.

The cottage felt smaller than ever, packed with three people and a future hanging in the air.

I looked at Corvin. Then at Elara. Then back at Corvin.

"How long does academy training usually take? For someone starting my age?"

Corvin's eyebrow rose. "Standard track is five years. Basic magical education. Theory, control, practical application. After that, specialization."

"And someone who starts later? Like next year?"

"Same track. They'd just be a year behind." He tilted his head. "Why?"

I turned to Elara.

"How much can you teach me in the next few months? If we push hard? Really hard?"

Elara's eyes narrowed. "You want to finish my training faster."

"I want to enter the academy ready. Not behind. Not catching up. Ready." I looked at Corvin. "If I stay and train with Elara, can I test in early? Skip the first year?"

Corvin blinked. Then laughed—short, surprised.

"You want to compress years of training into months?"

"I want to try."

He looked at Elara. "Can he?"

Elara was quiet for a long moment. Studying me like I was a problem she hadn't solved yet.

Then: "Maybe. If he survives."

Corvin's smile widened. "I like this kid."

He stood. Walked to the door. Paused.

"I'll report back that you're continuing training. The offer stands. Test when you're ready." He looked at me. "Don't take too long. The world doesn't wait."

He left.

Horses. Voices. Hooves fading.

Silence.

Elara turned to me.

"You realize what you just asked for."

"I asked to work harder."

"You asked for the impossible. Compressed training kills most students." She crossed to the fire. Stirred the pot. Didn't look at me. "I've seen it. Kids your age, desperate to catch up, pushing too fast. Their bodies break. Their minds break. Their sparks burn out."

"I'm not most students."

"No. You're more stubborn. That's not always better."

I walked to her. Stood where she had to see me.

"I'm not asking for easy. I'm asking for hard. The hardest you can give me. If I break, I break. But at least I'll know I tried."

She stared at me for a long, long moment.

Then she nodded.

"Starting tomorrow, training doubles. You'll wake earlier, sleep later, eat faster. No breaks. No complaints. No quitting." She pointed at me. "If you cry, you cry while working. If you bleed, you bleed while working. If you want to stop, you remember that you asked for this."

[NEW QUEST: THE ACCELERATED PATH]

· Duration: 2 months (compressed from 4)

· Objective: Complete Elara's full training program.

· Requirements: Master elemental basics, combat magic, theory application.

· Penalty: Burnout, injury, or death.

"Yes," I said. "I remember."

"Good." She turned back to the pot. "Now eat. Tomorrow comes fast."

Day 1 of Accelerated Training

Dawn came dark.

Elara woke me by dumping cold water on my face.

"Up. Outside. Now."

I moved.

The clearing was cold. Frost on grass. My breath visible.

Elara stood in the center, holding two objects.

A voidstone. Black. Hungry.

A sparkstone. White. Ready.

"Today's lesson: doing two things at once."

She tossed me the voidstone.

I caught it. Panic surged—my spark screaming, demanding action.

"Hold that. Keep your spark calm. And light this." She tossed me the sparkstone.

I caught it with my other hand.

Voidstone in left. Sparkstone in right. Calm AND create.

My spark went haywire.

The voidstone screamed at it to panic. The sparkstone demanded energy. My body didn't know which to obey.

The sparkstone flickered. Died.

"Again."

I tried.

Failed.

Tried.

Failed.

Tried.

Failed.

By noon, I'd accomplished nothing. My hands shook. My head pounded. My spark felt like a frightened animal.

"Again."

"Elara—"

"Again."

I looked at her. Saw nothing but stone.

She's not being cruel. She's teaching. This is the lesson.

I closed my eyes.

Voidstone in left. Don't fight it. Let it scream. Don't react.

Sparkstone in right. Feed it. Gently. Ignore the panic.

Two things at once. Separate. Independent.

I opened my eyes.

The sparkstone glowed.

Weak. Flickering. But on.

Elara nodded. "Good. Hold it for one minute."

I held.

Twenty seconds. Thirty. Forty—

The sparkstone died. The voidstone won.

But I'd done it. Even for a moment.

[SKILL UPGRADE: DUAL FOCUS - LEVEL 1]

· Effect: Can maintain two magical effects simultaneously. Unstable. Draining.

· Note: This skill separates amateur mages from professionals.

"Again," Elara said.

I went again.

---

Week 9: Combat Integration

"Today, you fight."

I stood in the clearing. Across from me: Elara. No weapon. No visible magic.

"I'm supposed to fight you?"

"No. You're supposed to try to fight me. You'll fail. The lesson is in the failing."

She moved.

I didn't even see her. One moment she was ten feet away. The next, I was on the ground, gasping, my arm twisted behind me.

"Your spark reacted. Too slow. Again."

We did this for three hours.

I never touched her. Not once.

But by the end, my spark reacted faster. My body moved sooner. My eyes tracked better.

"Progress," she said. "Barely. Again tomorrow."

---

Week 10: Elemental Fusion

Three elements now. Fire. Water. The spark itself.

"Combine them," Elara said. "Steam. Heated water. Pushing water with fire."

I tried.

Failed.

Tried.

Failed.

Then, on day four, something clicked.

Fire in one hand. Water in the other. Instead of keeping them separate, I pushed them together.

Steam erupted. Hot. Expanding.

I stumbled back. Stared at my hands.

"Congratulations," Elara said dryly. "You've discovered steam. Mages have known about it for millennia. But you figured it out yourself. That's something."

[NEW SPELL UNLOCKED: STEAM BURST - LEVEL 1]

· Effect: Combine fire and water magic for a burst of hot steam. Area effect. Unpredictable.

· Note: Can blind, burn, or push enemies. Also can burn you.

---

Week 11: The Memory Weaver Deepens

Late nights in the library became my refuge.

The memory-band hummed constantly now, pulling fragments from my old life.

Flash.

Old life. Twenty-one. Roommate was a physics major. Explained thermodynamics once while drunk.

Heat moves to cold. Energy transfers. Nothing is lost, just changed.

I applied it to magic.

Fire wasn't creation—it was transfer. Moving energy from my spark into the world.

Water wasn't summoning—it was influence. Persuading existing water to move.

Everything connected.

[MEMORY WEAVER: LEVEL 2 → LEVEL 3]

· Success Rate: 55% → 70%

· New Ability: Can combine multiple memories for complex problem-solving.

---

Week 12: The Final Test

Two months since I asked for accelerated training.

Elara stood in the clearing at dawn. No voidstone. No sparkstone. No training tools.

Just her.

"Today's test is simple. Hit me."

I blinked. "What?"

"Hit me. With magic. With your body. With anything. If you touch me, you pass. If you don't, you fail. And you wait another year for the academy."

I stared at her.

"You're serious."

"I'm never not serious."

I moved.

Fire first—Flame Spark, aimed at her feet. Not to hurt, to distract.

She stepped aside. Easy. Bored.

Water next—a push, trying to unbalance her.

She sidestepped. Didn't even look challenged.

Steam—I combined both, sending a cloud between us.

She waved a hand. The steam parted.

Nothing works. She's too fast. Too experienced. Too—

The memory-band hummed.

Flash.

Old life. Watching a documentary about predators. Lions hunting. They don't chase randomly—they drive prey toward other hunters.

I'm not hunting alone.

I looked at Elara. At the clearing. At the trees behind her.

I ran.

Not toward her—around. Circling wide. Using the trees for cover.

She tracked me. Always tracking. Never losing sight.

But I wasn't trying to lose her.

I was trying to position her.

The sun. Rising behind me. If I could get her to face it—

I broke from the trees. Direct line. Running straight at her.

She turned to face me. Sun behind me, in her eyes.

Just for a second. Just a flicker of squint.

I threw everything.

Fire left. Water right. Steam center. Not at her—around her. Creating chaos. Confusion.

And in that chaos, I dove.

Not at her—past her. Rolling. Coming up behind.

She turned. Too slow.

My hand touched her back.

Just a touch. Just a fingertip.

But I touched her.

Elara froze.

The clearing went silent.

I stood there, gasping, heart pounding, waiting for her to say I'd cheated or it didn't count.

She turned. Slowly. Looked at me.

"You used the terrain. The sun. Misdirection. Multiple elements." Pause. "You used strategy."

"I used everything."

She nodded. Just once.

But I saw it. The thing she never showed.

Pride.

Elara walked past me toward the cottage.

"Pack your things. You leave tomorrow."

I followed. "Tomorrow?"

"Corvin will return at dawn. He's been watching. Waiting." She didn't look back. "You're ready. As ready as anyone ever is."

"Elara—"

She stopped. Didn't turn.

"Thank you. For everything. For not letting me quit. For pushing harder than I thought I could take."

Silence.

Then, quietly: "You did the work. I just watched."

She walked inside.

I stood there in the clearing, alone with the frost and the dawn and the future waiting.

The old me would have been terrified.

The new me?

The new me was ready.
