Chapter 16 - Jessica Harper

After hearing what Robert and Susan said, the guests felt much more relaxed.

Indeed, rich young men are pampered and enjoy all kinds of privileges. They can't stand the slightest grievance, so why would they be willing to be a live-in son-in-law for three years?

Everyone felt that Jeff had nothing to do with Marcus Kane's agency revocation.

Perhaps Jeff's pretense of making the phone call was just a coincidence, or perhaps he had received the news beforehand.

Regardless, Marcus Kane's career was about to decline. That was already a done deal.

Old Madam Harper gave Michael a wink, and Michael immediately understood. He took the red wine that Marcus had brought and walked over.

"Marcus, you can take this bottle of wine back. My mom has changed her taste recently and doesn't like drinking red wine anymore."

Upon learning that Marcus's agency had been terminated, Michael switched from calling him "Mr. Kane" to using his first name!

Furthermore, they were returning the congratulatory gift Marcus had sent!

This was clearly a way of saying they wanted nothing more to do with Marcus!

Marcus quickly said, "Mr. Harper, please keep the wine. If the old lady doesn't drink it, you can drink it too."

Michael insisted on returning it. "We appreciate your kindness, but we don't really like drinking it."

Marcus held the red wine, his face burning with embarrassment. He quickly returned to his table, intending to use the wine as an excuse to offer it around.

"Ms. Lang, I went to great lengths to buy this 1990 Romanée-Conti. Come on, let me open it and we'll drink it!"

Marcus didn't even call a waiter; he opened the red wine himself.

However, after the expensive bottle was opened, no one was willing to drink it.

"Ms. Lang, Mr. Lang, let me pour you some, please have a taste." Marcus walked toward Victoria Lang.

Victoria Lang politely declined. "I'm sorry, I drove here, so I can't drink."

Can't drink alcohol?

Marcus clearly remembered that just moments ago Victoria Lang had offered him a toast!

Marcus then approached Victor Lang, who also waved his hand in refusal. "I only drink whiskey."

Meanwhile, the others at the table took the opportunity to pick up their glasses and go to Old Madam Harper's table to wish her a happy birthday.

The table, which had been lively just moments ago, was now empty except for Victoria Lang.

"Poor guy, this is the reality of society."

Seeing Marcus's predicament, Jeff couldn't help but shake his head.

The Harper family and the upper echelons of this circle were all too pragmatic. It was no wonder Emily would cheat on her husband for money.

Seeing that only Victoria Lang remained at the table, Marcus assumed she was still willing to be his friend.

Marcus stepped forward and asked, "Ms. Lang, would it be convenient to exchange contacts? I might like to invite President Warren to dinner sometime in the future."

Victoria Lang took a sip of tea and said, "Sorry, I didn't bring my phone."

"Well,.wait what?"

Marcus's face was extremely ugly. For a man, the most painful thing is not being beaten, but being looked down upon!

Jeff had made sure Marcus received the punishment he deserved!

Marcus stood there alone, holding a bottle of red wine, while the others laughed and chatted.

Seeing Marcus's miserable state, Jeff felt a pang of pity and decided to give him another chance.

"Marcus."

Jeff suddenly called out to him, then took out an empty wine glass and said:

"If you sincerely apologize to me now, I will allow you to pour me a drink, and afterward, I will have Alex Warren extend your agency for another year."

Jeff didn't explain it very clearly, but drinking the wine poured by Marcus meant that he had forgiven him.

Marcus had offered drinks to everyone present, but no one was willing to drink them. Jeff was helping him out.

However, Marcus felt that Jeff was taking advantage of him!

Marcus said, "I make over a million dollars a bottle of wine. If you want some, just say so. Stop pretending to be a big shot." He continued to talk in a dry, condescending tone.

"You want me to apologize to you, my good-for-nothing son-in-law? Wouldn't that make everyone here look down on me even more? How am I supposed to stay in this industry then!"

Jeff shook his head. "Indeed, there's always a reason why someone is pitiful. In that case, you can fend for yourself!"

Jeff had felt a little sorry for Marcus before, which might be related to his grandfather's upbringing. His grandfather had always raised Jeff to be a kind person.

Grandpa said that kind people are more likely to be happy.

Jeff gave Marcus a chance, but Marcus didn't cherish it. Now, Jeff had no pity for Marcus whatsoever.

Marcus quickly left the birthday banquet, holding a bottle of red wine, feeling awkward and alone.

After Marcus left, watching his lonely figure, Jeff thought to himself:

"I wonder if I'll ever run into this guy again. If he ever finds out I'm the chairman of Horizon Group, he'll probably regret it to the core."

While thinking, Jeff used a soup spoon to scoop up some soup and drink it.

But to everyone's surprise, Jessica Harper, who was sitting opposite Jeff, also wanted to drink the soup, and their spoons clinked together.

Clang.

"Ugh, how annoying! My spoon touched that useless begger's spoon, and now my spoon is dirty! Waaah..."

Jessica immediately began to complain with disgust.

Brandon quickly spoke up for his sister. "Jeff, isn't this much food enough for you? Why do you have to fight with my sister? Do you even know if this is suitable for you?"

Actually, Jeff had been thinking about something and didn't pay attention to what he was eating.

Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a sweet soup with dates and lotus seeds.

Jeff glanced at Jessica's ample figure and immediately felt extremely embarrassed.
