Chapter 18 - The Reaper's Mistake

Zekai's vision tore away from the white void, and reality slammed back into place.

It didn't return in order. It snapped shut like a trap, some violent force wrenching his consciousness back to its anchor point without asking permission.

"...What the hell happened here?"

His own voice sounded wrong—deeper, hollow, like it belonged to someone else entirely.

Something small and dark sat on the stone near his knee. A black cube, hollowed out now, its glow long since spent.

He knew it on sight.

"...This is Aron's."

He'd handed it over himself, back before any of this started. Don't lose it, he'd said. It wouldn't have left his hand unless something had already gone wrong.

"Aron—?"

He pushed himself upright, joints aching in ways his body shouldn't have been able to feel yet, and closed his fingers around the cube on pure instinct, already turning to look for him.

The red interface flickered into his vision.

[ ARCANA INTERFACE ACTIVE ]

Subject: Zekai Krystan

State: Displaced → Reanchored

He didn't read past the headline. His eyes had already locked onto the nightmare in front of him.

Aron hung suspended in the air, body limp and unnaturally still, like the space around him had been forcibly paused mid-frame. A black shape had its fingers wrapped around his throat.

"...What the hell is that."

[ TARGET LOCKED ]

Entity: SOULREAVER

Classification: Extraction-Type

[ Threat Level: Lethal ]

He didn't have time to parse what the system was telling him.

Aron's face came into focus—eyes flooded with raw terror, and underneath it, something that broke loose the second their gazes met. Relief. That was all Zekai needed to see.

"Don't... lose yourself... Mr. Zekai..." Aron choked the words out.

Something cracked open in his chest. If he didn't move right now, Aron would die here. He moved before the thought finished forming.

CRACK!

The air detonated behind his boots the instant he accelerated. Something sharper, more predatory, seized full control of his body. Energy tore loose from his core, violent and uncontained.

Crimson wrapped around his right arm like a furnace lit from the inside, black threads of authority braided through it.

Flash.

He vanished from where he stood. His body crossed distances no muscle should have been able to reach, faster than sight could track.

He reappeared in the air, directly in front of the Soulreaver.

His hand closed around its throat, fingers locking onto flesh that existed only because his authority forced it to.

The black entity's body warped around his fingers, its silhouette collapsing inward, the darkness crushed from within.

For one second, the entity's core resisted on some level deeper than physical — the same dominance it had used to pin Aron in place moments ago, now turned back on it.

Zekai crushed the resistance flat.

He hadn't caught the body. He'd caught the movement itself, stopped somewhere between intention and completion.

He didn't wait around for the timeline to catch up. The Soulreaver never got the chance to understand what had just happened to it.

He shifted his stance. His body knew the next move before his mind gave the order.

"You picked the wrong target."

Aron's limp body dropped as the grip released him.

He tore the Soulreaver's grip loose and hurled it aside without looking, arm already reaching for Aron as he fell. He spun once to bleed off the momentum, then lowered him gently onto stone clear of the wreckage.

"Aron. You still with me?"

"Ah—" Aron managed a weak nod, breath rattling in his ruined throat.

That was enough.

"...Sorry. Took me too long to wake up."

Before Zekai could reset his stance, the Soulreaver tore through the space and reappeared directly behind him.

Its white eyes opened behind Zekai's shoulder, two points of absolute light against the darkness.

Swish.

The strike missed entirely. His arm had already moved, answering a decision he hadn't consciously made.

Aron's vision swam, his body wrecked, every breath dragging fire through a punctured chest that barely rose anymore. But his eyes stayed fixed on Zekai's outline, crimson light burning around him, black threads crawling across his arm like living fractures.

"...You're still you... right?" His voice came out paper-thin.

A broken laugh tore loose, blood catching at the edge of his lips. "...Of course you are."

"I knew it." His fingers curled weakly against the stone. "...You wouldn't lose."

The outcome had already been decided somewhere the system could see and Zekai couldn't. He didn't even bother turning around.

Three paces of distance meant nothing. The Soulreaver's cold crawled up the back of his neck like proximity had never mattered to it at all.

The shadow arm lunged to impale him. Zekai's hand shot back like a snake striking, catching the thing by the throat—fingers sinking into something half-solid, half-not—and hauled the entire twisting shape into the air with one arm like it weighed nothing.

The Soulreaver's entire body jerked to a stop. Its outstretched arm remained inches from Zekai's back.

He tightened his grip. Dark energy burst from his knuckles — and in his other hand, the cube pulsed once, faint and answering, as his fingers closed harder around it without thinking.

Zekai turned his head slightly, eyes cold. "I'm talking to him."

"You're not part of this."

BOOM.

He threw the Soulreaver — and the arc bent mid-flight, the space around it groaning as the Soulreaver's own authority fought the throw.

It didn't matter. The Fool's force didn't negotiate. The Soulreaver slammed into the ancient wall hard enough to crack solid stone inward, fractures spidering out across the surface. The same authority that gripped it forced its form solid, and something like bone cracked under the impact. It kept moving anyway.

He glanced back at Aron, blood pooling beneath him.

"Stay there."

"This won't take long."

Zzzzsup!

The crimson interface flared.

[ ARCANA RESPONSE ]

Authority: THE FOOL

Status: Partial Manifestation

Effect: Reality Deviation Initiated

Warning: Control Undefined

...So this is what Zero shoved into me.

He didn't need to understand the mechanism. Only one rule mattered right now.

He didn't care what graveyard dimension this hallway belonged to. He didn't care about prophecy, about why the sky over this place had torn itself open in the first place.

Zekai stepped between Aron and the Soulreaver.

The Fool's authority settled over him, quiet now, and waiting.

Behind him, Aron lay bleeding against the stone.

In front of him, the Soulreaver slowly rose from the crater.

[ UNBROKEN LEDGER — DIRECTIVE ISSUED ]

Target: SOULREAVER

Objective: Eliminate

Secondary Failure Penalty: [ REVERSED FOOL DOMAIN — LOCK ]

...You don't need to tell me that.

His mind had gone perfectly clear, down to one single thought.

"From here on—anyone who tries to kill us dies by my hand."

The Soulreaver stared at him.

And for the first time since it had crossed into this world—it stopped moving.
