Chapter 17 - The One Who Woke

Aron turned at the faint sound behind him.

Snap.

Before the noise even finished registering, cold force closed around his throat from behind.

His feet left the ground. Whatever held him wasn't just choking him—it suspended his full body weight in midair on strength that had no business existing. The air went out of his lungs in one violent pull.

"Ack—!"

His voice box gave out before his brain could catch up to what was happening.

The thing didn't step toward him. It just pulled, and Aron's body obeyed, dragged closer without the distance between them actually shrinking—like the space itself had simply reassigned his coordinates.

He thrashed, clawing at whatever gripped him. His fingers passed straight through the arm, like grabbing at smoke. Nothing solid to fight against.

Then his eyes found it, and his whole body seized in primal horror.

Not human. Not even something he could file under monster.

A humanoid shape carved entirely out of abyssal dark—a living void wearing the rough outline of a man. Its eyes burned pure white, blinding against the black. Its mouth hung open, filled with the same unnatural light. It hung over him like a reaper that had wandered in from somewhere physics had never touched.

Flicker.

A blue interface cracked open in the air.

[ TRIGGER EVENT: UNKNOWN ]

[ ENTITY IDENTIFIED — SOULREAVER ]

A Soulreaver.

The air around it didn't stir, didn't react. Like it had always occupied this exact spot, and only now had it let itself be seen.

What is this thing. Where did it even come from.

His eyes darted across the floor, hunting for the King Knight. It lay collapsed and still, its light finally gone out. The loop had broken.

The Knight's dead. Then why isn't the retry screen firing?

The truth landed a half-second too late to help him. This thing wasn't part of the trial. This was what came after it.

[ NEW CONDITION APPLIED ]

Future Termination = Permanent

Then who the hell summoned this?

Aron forced his body to override the terror screaming through it. Even with no path to winning, something in him refused to go down without swinging first.

He shoved against the arm holding him with everything he had left.

His hand found nothing. No resistance at all.

But something else answered.

The fallen sword on the ruined floor trembled.

Scrrrrk—

Metal dragged across stone, then shot upward like something invisible had yanked it into the air.

He caught it on instinct. He didn't know if it was his own power answering or pure desperation dragging the blade to him. He swung immediately.

Swish.

The steel cut clean through the Soulreaver's torso like slicing fog. No resistance. No damage. Nothing.

"What—?"

Before he could swing again, the grip on his throat tightened, and the sword slipped from numb fingers, clattering against the stone.

The shadow tilted its head, hollow white eyes drilling straight into him. Then it spoke.

Where is it.

Not a question. It already had the answer—it just wanted him to confirm it. The voice didn't move through the air. It pressed directly into his skull.

Aron went rigid. "What—what are you talking about—?" he choked out.

The white gaze flared, cold and furious.

"Your kind did this."

A pause, heavy enough to crush him.

"Return it."

This wasn't interrogation. It was precision—locked onto something specific, never once looking away from Aron, like it could read the exact signature of what it had come for. It already knew he was the one holding the trigger.

It lifted him higher, fingers sinking deeper into his throat.

"...I—I can't breathe—"

His vision blurred. The creature raised its other hand, palm hovering inches from his face.

The instant that palm aligned with his eyes, something violent tore open inside his chest.

Not physical. Something buried far deeper than muscle and bone answered the proximity—pressure building behind his ribs until it imploded inward, not heat, but the sensation of his own life being crushed and pulled out of his body at the same time.

"—Ah—!"

Thin, smoke-colored light tore loose from his chest, stretching unnaturally toward the Soulreaver's open hand. His spine arched, his body's baseline resistance collapsing instantly against whatever authority this thing carried.

His pupils shrank to pinpricks.

No—stop—that's mine—

His fingers clawed at the arm around his neck, but his body was failing fast. His chest tightened past the point of pain, his own existence unraveling, harvested piece by piece.

Bzzzt.

[ SOUL STATUS ]

[ Integrity: Decreasing ]

[ Extraction Risk: HIGH ]

What does that even mean? His mind scrambled for footing even as the words blurred. He didn't need the translation. His dying body understood the stakes perfectly. Something at the root of him was coming loose. He was sliding out of his own identity.

"I—I can feel it. My soul. It's being pulled out of me."

If that light leaves my chest completely, there won't even be a body left to bury. I'll just be gone. Erased. Like I was never here at all.

The extraction didn't slow. Darkness crept in from the edges of his vision. His strength drained out with everything else. Worse than decapitation. This wasn't dying. This was deletion.

He reached his shaking arm toward the only person who might still save him.

"Mr. Zekai... please... save me..."

Zekai didn't move. He stood there, a silent statue lost somewhere deep inside his own white void, and gave no answer at all.

Is there really no other way?

Then, like lightning cutting through a black sky, a memory surfaced through the fog closing over his mind.

The Greyhaven intersection. The exact second reality had first cracked open.

The black stone cube.

He'd been sprinting through the crowd, racing to return Marcus's tarot box, when some careless stranger had clipped Zekai's shoulder—and something heavy had tumbled out of his coat pocket and hit the pavement.

A black stone cube. The moment it touched the ground, the entire world had glitched and gone still.

Aron remembered it now with perfect, brutal clarity. His chest clenched. That's it. That's where all of this started.

Not the dimension. Not the palace. The cube. The instant that thing manifested, the sky had torn open and the monsters had come pouring through. It was the trigger for all of it.

Zekai had asked him back in the courtyard: "Do these look like they're glowing to you?"

He'd seen nothing then. Ordinary human eyes, ordinary blindness. But now, balanced on the edge of dying, his sight had changed. He could see it—that same faint crimson pulse, glowing from his own pocket. His fingers twitched.

The rules just shifted under me.

Zekai knew something about this artifact, even if he didn't understand all of it. And this shadow reaper wasn't hunting Aron at all. It was hunting the cube.

"Give it back."

The insight hit him like a physical blow.

It's not tracking me. It's tracking the cube. To this thing, I'm just an insect that happens to be holding what it wants.

Only one move left on the board.

If this monster wants the cube back—it can pry it out of the ash after I'm gone.

Whatever happened to his soul after this, he wasn't handing over the prize willingly.

With the last scrap of function left in his failing body, he forced his shaking hand into his pocket and closed his fingers around the cold, heavy weight of the cube.

He pulled it free. His whole arm shook, muscle tearing under the strain as he drew back to throw it toward Zekai.

[ Integrity: 20% ]

The Soulreaver had already taken most of him, his body giving out piece by piece.

With one last, desperate surge of will, he threw it.

His arm barely completed the motion. Every ounce of force he had left went into that single throw.

...Sorry, Mr. Zekai.

His fist closed on nothing. I'm leaving the rest to you.

The cube left his hand—and froze mid-air.

Tick.

The exact same sound from the intersection echoed through the ruined hall.

BOOM.

The cube detonated in a wall of crimson light. Sharp red veins of energy split across its surface, pulsing like a heartbeat, before the whole thing erupted.

Threads of pure energy shot outward—and instead of scattering into the dark, they drove straight into Zekai's frozen chest.

His body reacted instantly, a violent tremor tearing through his limbs.

"Please—wake up—" Aron's voice had shrunk to barely a whisper, his consciousness narrowing down to one dying thread of light.

"...You're my last hope, Mr. Zekai."

The artifact answered. It had never belonged to Aron at all—it had been waiting this whole time for its actual master.

The Soulreaver froze. For the first time since it had appeared, its pattern broke completely.

Its white gaze tore away from Aron and locked onto the glowing cube instead, and something in its stillness read as recognition. Like it had finally found the exact thing it had crossed into this reality to retrieve.

—So. The Sovereignty rests in you.

The extraction stopped cold. Not hesitation—calculation. Risk, weighed and respected. For the first time, something like caution rolled off the creature in waves.

It raised its free hand, calling on some unseen gravity to drag the floating cube into its shadow palm.

The instant its dark energy touched the artifact—

Something answered back.
