Chapter 19 - No Mercy

The Soulreaver tore out of the rubble and came straight for Zekai—then stopped cold. Not retreat. Aim. Its white gaze fixed on his center, and a shadow palm rose in front of it, slow and deliberate.

Something answered inside him before he even understood the threat. A mutation, deep in his core—not flesh this time. Soul.

Integrity: Failing Soul Extraction: In Progress

Layer Breach Detected

Thin, iridescent smoke began pulling loose from his chest.

Something invisible drove through his ribs—not tearing his body, but dragging him loose from himself. His vision fractured as his own identity got hauled forward, inch by inch, like a hand had reached inside him and found the part that made him him.

His breath caught. "...What—?"

No pain compared to this. This was the sensation of being erased from a place he might never find his way back to. Existence, coming undone thread by thread.

His knees buckled toward the concrete.

...So this is what Aron felt.

Not a wound. An extraction.

Two paths opened in his mind at once. Give in, the way every human instinct screamed at him to. Or trust some unknown mechanism buried inside the Arcana. His thoughts didn't slow down under the weight—if anything, they sharpened.

Choose wrong, and there's nothing left of me to regret it with.

The pull tightened. For one fraction of a second his whole body leaned into the vacuum, and surrender felt so much easier than fighting.

Then Aron's face surfaced behind his eyes—bloody, wrecked, still reaching for a sword he had no idea how to use, five deaths deep and still not done.

"He went through this?"

His jaw locked. "...Then there's no choice." Fingers closing into fists.

His voice came out rough, unsteady, but it held.

"...So what the hell am I doing on my knees?"

The pull dug in harder. It found the unmapped parts of his soul—the fragments of the Fool he hadn't learned to control yet—and went straight for them first. The friction threatened to split his mind clean in half.

The interface fractured into a dozen overlapping windows, flickering between two states like a coin that couldn't land.

Zekai forced his boot forward. Every step landed like the floor itself was pushing back, some inverse gravity trying to fold him back down to his knees.

He fought it anyway, his own spiritual core being wrung out of his chest in real time.

Damn it. Zero said this power would help me. All it's done is eat me alive one piece at a time.

[ FINAL WARNING ]

Soul Integrity: 5%

00:00:04

The Fool does not guarantee survival.

Only outcomes you are willing to lose yourself for.

No other road existed. Four seconds, and if he picked nothing, the Soulreaver finished digesting his soul without him.

"Option one," he rasped. "Or option two."

Give up twenty-one years, stack it on top of the one Zero had already taken, and his clock would run dangerously thin. Still better than a guaranteed expiration date.

Then again—option two.

He pulled in one sharp, unsteady breath.

The function was a black box. Control wasn't promised. The danger sat there plain and unhidden.

Didn't matter. This was a coin flip between two kinds of dying.

"...There's nothing worse than dying like an insect in a room like this."

He glared at the red text still burning in front of him, stabilized his breathing, and let his eyes go hard.

"I choose Option Two."

[ ANOMALY DETECTED ]

Expected Outcome: Collapse

Actual Outcome: Absolute Resistance

Recalibrating system parameters...

"I will not break here." The words came out through his teeth.

Something answered him. Not his body. Not the interface. Something older, buried far deeper—an anomaly with no business existing inside this reality at all.

BOOM.

Pressure erupted out of him, cell by cell, like his ribs were about to give way from the inside. Then red lightning tore free of his chest and slammed into the Soulreaver.

Shatter.

The extraction snapped like a rope cut mid-pull. Whatever law had been dragging his soul out of his body simply stopped applying to him.

[ OVERRIDE CONFIRMED ]

Authority Deviation Accepted

Soul Extraction: Denied

[ HIDDEN FUNCTION ASSIGNED: THE UNBROKEN LEDGER ]

The instant the lightning connected, the Soulreaver's shadow body warped and buckled, groaning as if crushed from within by a weight that shouldn't exist.

[ ANOMALY DETECTED ]

It didn't die.

An enforcer of this dungeon's layer wasn't erased by one unrefined burst of authority. Enough of its core survived. Even after taking the full conceptual weight of the Fool, it planted its warped limbs back into the debris and stayed upright.

But its math had broken. It no longer understood what it was looking at.

Something mortal had just overridden its own baseline rules.

Even shaken by a counter-surge that should have finished it, the creature didn't back off. Extraction-types didn't know retreat as a concept. It just stood in the ruin of the room, hollow eyes locked on him, radiating one unmistakable intention.

It wasn't leaving until Zekai stopped breathing.

Good. This was exactly the moment to show it what that would cost.

"Try that again."

He lifted his head, eyes lit with something dangerous and hungry.

"—and I'll erase you."

No hesitation left in him. No fear either.

"No mercy this time."

A pause settled over the wreckage, heavy enough to choke on.

"And I won't leave a trace of you behind when I'm done."

He stepped forward, red and black lightning crawling around his boots with every footfall.

"Not for something like you."
