Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – Moonlit Threads

Something was wrong with the forest tonight.

Aria felt it before she understood it.

The wind didn't just blow—it cut through the trees like a blade, cold and deliberate, brushing her cheeks with icy fingers. Every step she took felt… watched.

Not by eyes she could see.

But by something that knew she was there.

Her grip tightened on the strap of her bow. It rested across her back, familiar and steady—but it did little to quiet the restless flutter rising in her chest.

This wasn't fear.

It was something deeper.

The forest felt… aware.

Every rustle of leaves, every shifting shadow, every whisper of wind carried a strange, sentient energy. It pressed against her senses—subtle, but undeniable—like the world itself was holding its breath.

Aria slowed.

"Get a grip," she muttered, though her voice came out quieter than she intended.

She had walked these woods countless times. She knew every trail, every bend, every hidden clearing.

So why did this feel different?

Then she saw it.

The trees parted, revealing a valley bathed in silver moonlight—too still, too perfect to be natural. Shadows stretched unnaturally across the ground, long and thin, like reaching fingers clawing toward something unseen.

The air hummed.

Soft. Vibrating. Alive.

It pulled at her.

Not physically… but deeper than that.

At her chest. Her breath. Her very core.

Aria hesitated at the edge. Every instinct screamed at her to turn back.

She didn't.

Her boots crunched softly against frost-laced grass as she stepped forward. The hum grew stronger, wrapping around her like invisible threads tightening with every step.

"What is this place…?" she whispered.

A low, guttural growl answered her.

Aria froze.

The sound rolled through the clearing—deep, powerful, vibrating through her bones. Slowly, deliberately, four figures emerged from the shadows.

They moved like predators.

No—worse.

Like something that knew it was at the top of the food chain.

The first stepped forward.

Tall. Broad-shouldered. Commanding.

Moonlight caught in his midnight-black hair, and his amber eyes locked onto hers with terrifying precision. Power radiated from him in heavy, undeniable waves.

Darius.

The name slipped into her mind uninvited.

Behind him, another figure emerged—quieter, sharper.

Kaelen.

His hazel eyes swept over her, calculating, missing nothing. There was danger in the way he observed her—not brute force like Darius, but control. Precision.

A third moved into view, circling slightly to her side.

Riven.

A faint grin curved his lips, edged with mischief—but something darker lingered beneath it. Something that made her pulse spike despite herself.

The last stepped forward.

Lucian.

Older. Silent. Watching.

His gaze felt like it pierced through flesh and bone, searching deeper—into something she didn't even understand within herself.

Aria's breath caught.

These weren't just men.

And they definitely weren't just wolves.

She felt it now—clearer than before. Something ancient. Something alive.

It threaded through them…

…and reached for her.

"You shouldn't be here," Darius said.

His voice was low, commanding—less a statement, more a verdict.

A shiver slid down her spine.

"I didn't mean to," Aria replied quickly, forcing steadiness into her voice. "I was just following a trail."

Kaelen tilted his head slightly, studying her like a puzzle he intended to solve.

"No one finds this place by accident," he said quietly.

The certainty in his tone tightened something in her chest.

Riven stepped closer, slow and deliberate, circling her like a curious predator.

"Curious little huntress," he murmured. "You have no idea what you've walked into."

Aria resisted the urge to turn with him. Showing fear felt like the wrong move.

Lucian's voice cut cleanly through the tension.

"The prophecy has awakened."

The words landed like a stone in still water.

"She cannot leave," he continued calmly. "And we cannot ignore her."

Aria's pulse thundered.

"Prophecy? I don't—"

"It doesn't matter," Darius interrupted, stepping closer.

The air shifted with him.

"The bond is already forming."

Her breath hitched.

"What bond?"

As if in answer, something stirred in her chest.

A faint pull.

Then stronger.

Invisible threads curled around her ribs, warm and alive, tightening just enough to steal her breath.

Her fingers trembled.

She could feel it.

Actually feel it.

"What is this?" she whispered, panic slipping through.

Kaelen's gaze flickered—less cold now, but no less intense.

"It's not something we're doing to you," he said. "It exists."

Riven's grin faded slightly as he watched her more carefully.

"Fight it if you want," he added. "It won't change anything."

The threads pulsed.

Stronger.

Aria stumbled back, her heart racing.

"No," she said, shaking her head. "No, this isn't possible. I don't even know you."

"Exactly," Kaelen replied quietly.

"And yet… you feel it."

That terrified her more than anything else.

Because he was right.

A distant howl split the night—sharp, commanding.

All four of them stilled instantly.

Darius's attention snapped toward the sound, his entire posture shifting—alert, dangerous.

Then his gaze returned to her.

"Everything changes now," he said.

The threads in her chest pulsed again—stronger this time, responding to something beyond them.

Aria backed away, her breath uneven.

"I don't understand any of this," she said. "And I'm not agreeing to anything."

For a brief moment—just a flicker—something shifted in Kaelen's expression.

Then it vanished.

The threads pulsed anyway.

Stronger.

Insistent.

Alive.

And somewhere beyond the valley… something answered.

The air turned colder.

Heavier.

A presence pressed against the edges of the world—ancient, watching, aware.

Hidden in the shadows, unseen eyes gleamed.

"So…" a voice whispered, low and inhuman.

"The huntress has arrived."

Aria's breath caught as the pull in her chest tightened—no longer gentle, but inevitable.

Whatever this was…

It had already begun.

And whether she accepted it or not—

it wasn't letting her go.
