The attack came before dawn.
Aria woke to the sound of howling — not the distant call of patrol wolves, but something violent. Close. Wrong.
The air in her room felt charged. Heavy.
Then the alarms began.
Not bells.
Growls.
Shouts.
The entire fortress shifted from sleep to war in seconds.
Her door burst open.
Darius stood there, already armed, already transformed halfway — his eyes burning amber, his canines elongated.
"Stay inside," he ordered.
"I'm not useless," she snapped, pushing past him.
He grabbed her wrist.
For a second, something dangerous flashed between them — anger, fear, something neither wanted to name.
"You are not trained," he said, voice low. "That is not the same as useless."
A crash echoed from the courtyard below.
Riven's voice followed, sharp and uncharacteristically serious. "They breached the eastern wall!"
Darius released her immediately.
"Kaelen is sealing the inner barrier," he said. "Lucian is with the warriors."
"And you?" she demanded.
His jaw tightened.
"I am staying with you."
Another explosion shook the stone beneath their feet.
Aria didn't wait.
She ran toward the balcony overlooking the courtyard.
Below, chaos.
Wolves clashed in violent blurs of silver and red. The red-eyed rogues were larger than before — twisted, lean, unnatural in their movements. They weren't fighting like normal wolves.
They were hunting.
Her mark burned.
"They're drawn to you," Lucian's voice said from behind her.
She turned sharply. He looked calm — but there was blood on his sleeve.
"Are we winning?" she asked.
"For now."
A rogue leapt from the shadows straight toward the balcony.
Lucian shifted instantly — bones snapping, fur erupting — intercepting it midair.
They crashed against the stone railing.
Aria gasped.
The rogue sank its teeth into Lucian's shoulder.
Time slowed.
Something inside her snapped.
The mark flared white.
A pulse of silver energy exploded outward from her body.
The rogue was thrown back violently, slamming into the courtyard floor below.
Silence fell for half a heartbeat.
Every wolf — silver and red — turned toward her.
Lucian shifted back into human form slowly, blood running down his arm. His dark eyes locked onto hers.
"You must not release power like that," he said quietly.
"I didn't mean to," she whispered.
A roar split the courtyard.
Darius, fully shifted now in massive wolf form, tore through two rogues at once. Riven moved like lightning beside him, reckless and brutal. Kaelen stood near the center, eyes glowing as an invisible barrier shimmered around the inner pack members.
But more red wolves were entering through the broken wall.
"They aren't here to win," Kaelen shouted.
"They're here to provoke."
Lucian stepped in front of Aria again, even injured.
"Back inside," he said.
"No."
Her voice surprised even herself.
"If they're here because of me, I'm not hiding."
Darius shifted back abruptly, chest heaving, blood streaked across his skin.
"You will not stand in the middle of a battlefield."
"I already am!" she shot back.
Another rogue lunged — not at her this time.
At Darius.
He didn't see it coming.
Aria did.
Without thinking, she moved.
The silver energy didn't explode this time.
It focused.
A sharp arc of light cut through the air, striking the rogue before it could reach him.
It collapsed instantly.
The courtyard fell quiet again.
Even the red wolves hesitated now.
Riven stared at her, breathing hard. "Well… that's new."
Kaelen stepped forward slowly, gaze intense.
"You're learning," he said.
But Darius wasn't looking at the fallen rogue.
He was looking at her.
And something in his expression had changed.
Not just protection.
Recognition.
The remaining rogues retreated suddenly, vanishing back into the forest as quickly as they had come.
No victory howl followed.
Only silence.
Lucian swayed slightly.
Aria rushed to him. "You're hurt."
"It is shallow," he said, though his breathing suggested otherwise.
Darius's jaw clenched.
"They tested our defenses," Kaelen said evenly. "And confirmed her power."
Riven wiped blood from his lip. "So this was a message."
"Yes," Kaelen replied.
Aria looked toward the forest.
"They know what I am."
Darius stepped beside her, voice low enough that only she could hear.
"So do we."
The moon above was fading as dawn approached.
But this wasn't over.
It had only begun.
