Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Trial of Instinct

The arena was carved from stone and shadow.

Aria stood at its center, the crescent mark beneath her collarbone faintly glowing, a heartbeat against her skin. Around her, the Moon Pack formed a perfect circle—silent, watchful. Some eyes were curious. Others openly hostile. The full moon hung above, casting silver light like a judge's gaze, cold and unyielding.

"This is unnecessary," Riven muttered under his breath, though he didn't step forward. His grin held a teasing edge, but there was tension beneath it that she couldn't ignore.

"It is tradition," Lucian replied calmly, dark eyes unwavering.

Darius stood at the front of the circle, expression unreadable. "The Trial of Instinct determines whether you can survive among us," he said, voice low, resonant, echoing through the stone arena.

Aria crossed her arms, spine stiff. "And if I fail?"

Kaelen answered evenly, calm but sharp. "Then the bond weakens. And so do we."

The weight of the words pressed into her chest. So this wasn't just about her. Her survival was tied to theirs.

"What do I have to do?" she asked, trying to mask the tremor in her voice.

Darius gestured toward the forest entrance behind her. "You will enter the woods alone."

A murmur rippled through the pack. Some wolves shifted, ears pricked.

"You will not be hunted," Darius continued. "But the forest will test you. Your instincts. Your resolve."

"That sounds worse," Aria muttered under her breath, fingers tightening around the faint glow of her mark.

Riven's lips twitched faintly. "Better get used to being uncomfortable."

Lucian stepped closer, lowering his voice so only she could hear. "Trust your instincts. Not your fear."

Darius's gaze locked onto hers, amber eyes sharp. "If you cannot endure one night… you cannot stand beside us."

Beside us. Not beneath. Not behind. A flicker of fire ignited inside her chest.

"Fine," she said, voice steady. "Open the gate."

The forest swallowed her almost instantly.

The sounds of the pack faded behind her, replaced by rustling leaves, the faint crack of branches, and distant, mournful howls. The air here was heavier, charged with something ancient, a quiet intelligence that watched her every move.

She walked carefully at first. Every snap of twig underfoot made her heart leap. Then the whispers began. Soft. Seductive. Like breath brushing against her mind.

You do not belong…

She spun, but saw nothing. Only shadows shifting.

Her mark pulsed faintly again, warmth spreading like fire under her skin. A branch snapped to her left. This time, movement emerged.

A wolf stepped from the darkness—but its eyes glowed red, fur shadowed and unnatural. Not a pack wolf. Rogue.

Her pulse spiked. Its growl rumbled through her chest as it circled her, predatory, calculated.

"You don't scare me," she whispered, though her heart thudded like a drum.

The wolf lunged.

Aria barely rolled aside, hitting the ground hard. Dirt scraped her palms, but she grabbed a fallen branch instinctively. The wolf came at her again, faster, stronger, a blur of teeth and fur. She felt its hot breath against her neck—and then something inside her flared.

Heat exploded through her chest. The crescent mark blazed silver.

The rogue yelped, stumbling backward as if struck. Energy—silver, faintly glowing—flickered at her fingertips. She stared, wide-eyed.

"What…?" she breathed.

The wolf lunged a third time. This time, she did not run.

She planted her feet, focusing. The energy surged outward, a burst of blinding light. When it cleared, the rogue had been thrown violently against a tree, vanishing into the shadows with a wounded snarl.

Silence fell. The forest seemed to hold its breath.

"You are stronger than you realize," a voice said.

Aria froze. Darius stepped from between the trees, calm, his amber eyes intense.

"You said I'd be alone," she snapped, chest heaving.

"You were," he replied, voice steady. "Until you awakened it."

She stared down at her hands. The glow had faded, but warmth lingered. Power thrummed beneath her skin.

"That wasn't instinct," she said. "That was… something else."

Darius stepped closer, fingers brushing just above her mark. Power rippled through them like a tether, humming deep inside her.

"Alpha energy," he said quietly.

Her breath hitched.

"Impossible," she whispered.

"For a human?" he asked. "Yes."

The air thickened, charged, intimate. For the first time, she did not feel surrounded. She felt seen.

"You followed me," she said softly, voice barely above a whisper.

"I ensured you survived," he said, jaw tightening, eyes dark.

"That's not the same thing," she murmured.

Something flickered in his gaze—conflict, restraint, something she couldn't name.

A howl echoed from deeper in the forest. Not rogue. Pack. Kaelen's voice carried over the wind.

"Darius."

Darius stepped back slightly, amber eyes flickering toward the trees. "The trial is not over."

Aria stiffened. "What do you mean?"

A second presence emerged from the shadows. Kaelen. His eyes shifted from Darius to her, sharp and deliberate.

"You've passed instinct," he said evenly. "Now comes… control."

The forest seemed to grow colder, more alive.

"Control of what?" she asked, pulse hammering.

Kaelen's eyes flickered faintly gold, a predatory gleam hidden in the depth. "Of us."

Aria's chest tightened. Every nerve ignited. She could feel the threads—the invisible pull of the Nexus—linking her to them.

This was only the beginning.
