Chapter 11 - - Dirty Secrets

I spent the next morning avoiding my phone like it was an unexploded bomb. Every time I thought about that voice note, the breathing, the "good girl", I felt a fresh wave of nausea.

But James is nothing if not persistent.

James: Hey, you got really quiet last night. Did I... did you not like the messages? I was trying to be me. I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable.

And there it was. The "Puppy" back in the room. The guilt hit me like a physical blow. I couldn't tell him the truth. I couldn't say, "James, it made me want to delete my own skin." That would be a soul-killer. And remember? I'm trying to be "good" now.

Me: No! No, it was fine. I was just... overwhelmed. It was intense. I liked it, Jamie.

I felt the lie sit heavy on my tongue. But James took it and ran.

James: Really?? Because I've always been scared to show you that side of me. I thought you'd think I was a freak. But if you're into intensity... there are other things I think about. Things I've never told anyone.

I sat up. My phone felt hot in my hand. Usually, when James says "things," he means like, wanting to hold hands in public or something equally lukewarm. But the tone was different this time.

James: I've always had these fantasies. About being... pushed. About things being a bit more messy. Not polite. I like the idea of you being the one in control, Elara. Not 'sweet' Elara. The one with the fire.

He started typing. A lot. And for the first time in a year, I wasn't scrolling past his words.

He started describing things. Taboo things. The kind of stuff that usually stays buried in the "Private" folder of your brain. Darker power dynamics, specific scenarios that were definitely not "Golden Retriever" approved. It was gritty. It was specific. It was... actually interesting.

For the first time since we started dating, I felt a spark. Not a "I love you" spark, but a "who the hell is this?" spark.

It turns out, James isn't just a puppy. He's a puppy who's been hiding a very dark, very complicated basement.

The logic gap was still there, he still didn't understand why I couldn't afford a $200 candle, but suddenly, the "cringe" was being replaced by a weird curiosity. He wasn't trying to be "dominant" anymore. He was being vulnerable about his own darkness.

Me: You like that? Really? I didn't think you had that in you.

James: I do. Only with you. Because I trust you with the messy parts of me. I thought you wanted the 'perfect' guy, so I tried to be him. But I'm much weirder than that.

I stared at the screen. I felt a weird, twisted sense of hope. Maybe the problem wasn't that he was "too good." Maybe the problem was that we were both playing roles in a play we both hated.

He wasn't the manly man. He wanted me to be the dominant one. And for a girl who feels like a "sensitive bitch" and a "monster," that role actually... fit. At the beginning.

I looked at his last message. I didn't feel the urge to check Maya's profile. For the first time, James was more interesting than the girl on the screen.

Me: Tell me more, Jamie. Don't hold back.

The "Great Pretend" wasn't over. Not yet. But for the first time, the script had a twist I actually wanted to read.
