Chapter 14 - 14. Power Of Combination

In the VIP lounge, Taesan felt Jaewon's gaze like a faint prickle at the back of his neck. He did not look over. He did not acknowledge him. Instead, his attention remained on Joshua, the tall man at his side who had quickly become both an ally and a useful piece in Taesan's carefully plotted plan.

Joshua set his glass down, his amber eyes glinting in the soft light. "You know, Taesan," he said, voice low and smooth, "with the skills you've shown me tonight, you could do so much more. Have you ever thought about going beyond this city, exploring what's out there?"

Taesan tilted his head, considering the question. "I've thought about it. But there are… personal matters I need to settle first. They can't be ignored."

Joshua leaned closer just slightly, a teasing glint in his eye. "Personal matters, huh? Sounds mysterious. I like that. Makes a man… intriguing."

Taesan raised an eyebrow, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Is that your subtle way of saying I should be careful?"

Joshua chuckled, the sound low and smooth. "Not at all. Consider it encouragement. But you should know, if you ever need someone to make things easier… I'm more than happy to help."

Taesan studied him, wary but intrigued. "I see. And what exactly would 'help' look like?"

Joshua's grin widened, playful now. "Depends on the situation. Could be advice. Could be connections. Could even be… a little protection if things get complicated." He tilted his head, letting the suggestion linger. "Or maybe just a little company for someone who seems far too serious all the time."

Taesan blinked, caught off guard by the casual intimacy in the words. He leaned back slightly, keeping his expression neutral. "I've managed fine on my own so far."

Joshua leaned closer, voice dropping just enough to brush against Taesan's curiosity. "I'm sure you have. But imagine how much further you could go if someone like me had your back." His smile was slow, deliberate, and slightly teasing.

Taesan let out a quiet chuckle, shaking his head. "You make it sound like I'd be dependent on you."

"Not dependent," Joshua corrected smoothly, lifting his glass with a mock bow. "Consider it… a partnership. Equals, for now. But with a little fun mixed in. I have a feeling we'll enjoy each other's company."

Taesan blinked, slightly flustered, but he nodded. "Alright… Joshua." He hesitated, then added, "I'll keep that in mind."

Joshua leaned back, eyes flicking over him, amused. "Good. And you can drop the 'Mr. Hong.' We're on first-name terms now. Feels better, doesn't it?"

"I suppose so," Taesan replied, a small, wary smile forming. "Joshua."

Joshua tilted his head, grinning. "Perfect. And remember, Taesan, no one said business had to be boring. Especially when there's a little… chemistry involved."

Taesan's pulse ticked faster, though he kept his face calm. He could sense the playful undertone in Joshua's words, the faint edge of flirtation. He also knew better than to underestimate it. Tonight was just the beginning.

Back at the main lounge, Jaewon can't tear his eyes away from the scene in the VIP lounge. Taesan—the Taesan he thought he knew—is an entirely different person tonight. The quiet, unassuming man who follows his lead at every gathering now seems like a centerpiece of power and influence, commanding the attention of someone like Joshua Hong, a figure Jaewon has only read about in headlines.

"Since when did Hyung run in these circles?" Jaewon mutters under his breath, his curiosity boiling over into a mixture of suspicion and unease.

Maya, ever observant, leans closer. "You're staring, Jaewon. Careful, or someone might think you're jealous."

"Jealous? Of him?" Jaewon snaps, louder than he intends. He quickly lowers his voice, frowning. "He's just.... acting weird. That's all."

Maya smirks, a knowing glint in her eye. "Weird, or is it that he's finally showing a side of himself you didn't think existed?"

Jaewon ignores her and turns back toward the VIP section. He watches as Taesan leans back in his seat, the faintest smirk playing on his lips as Joshua laughs at something he says. It's subtle but undeniable—Taesan is at ease in this environment, a far cry from the man Jaewon has always teased for being introverted and reserved.

As the night wears on, Jaewon sits completely puzzled. His mind races, replaying the image of Taesan sitting comfortably beside Joshua Hong, the two of them engaged in conversation like equals.

Then, movement in the VIP section catches his attention. Taesan and Joshua are standing, preparing to leave. Taesan adjusts his suit jacket with practiced ease, and Joshua claps him on the back, a gesture that speaks of friendship, a close one. They exchange a few last words before heading toward the exit.

Jaewon, unable to suppress his curiosity, hastily excuses himself from the table. "Be right back," he mumbles, ignoring Maya's raised eyebrow.

He follows them at a safe distance, slipping through the crowd with practiced ease. Outside the lounge, the crisp night air bites at his skin, but his focus remains on the two figures ahead. They walk side by side toward a sleek black McLaren parked at the curb.

Joshua turns to Taesan, his deep voice carrying in the quiet street. "I'll have my team draft the contract by tomorrow. Let me know if there's anything you want amended."

"Of course. I'll review it thoroughly."

"You've got potential, Taesan. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise."

"I appreciate that."

As Taesan and Joshua share a brief but warm hug, the reality of the scene hits Jaewon with a sudden force. His feet feel frozen to the pavement as he watches the two men—so different from the image he's always had of Taesan—prepare to leave together. Joshua claps him on the back once more, and their friendship seems so genuine, so effortless, that it stirs something uncomfortable deep within Jaewon.

Jaewon's heart thuds painfully in his chest. The feeling of awe grows into something darker, more unsettling—a cocktail of jealousy and realization. I didn't know him at all, Jaewon thinks bitterly, watching the car vanish around the corner.

Back inside the lounge, the laughter and chatter of Jaewon's friends continue, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing in Jaewon's mind. He can't shake the image of Taesan in that suit, walking so confidently beside Joshua Hong. For a moment, he feels like the outsider, like a child watching his older sibling step into a world he never knew existed.

Maya's words ring in his ears: "You know, it's kind of funny. For someone you claim to know so well, you seem totally clueless about him." The sting of her remark cuts deeper now, the truth in her words more apparent than ever. How much had I really known Taesan?

Jaewon shakes his head, as if trying to clear the thoughts swirling around in it, but they linger, persistent. His eyes drift back to the spot where Taesan had been, the VIP section now empty. He stands there for a long moment, lost in thought.

Finally, he turns and heads back to the table, his steps slow, heavy with the weight of his realizations. Maya looks up from her drink, a raised eyebrow directed at him. "Where'd you go?" she asks, her voice casual, but there's a knowing glint in her eye.

Jaewon forces a grin, though it feels hollow. "Just... needed some air," he says, taking his seat. But his mind is elsewhere, replaying the scene with Taesan and Joshua over and over. The questions in his head continue to swirl, unanswered. "Who is Taesan really? And how did I miss all the signs?"

The night drags on, but Jaewon finds little comfort in the loud chatter around him. All he can think about is the man who's been by his side for years—the one he's always dismissed as predictable, as simple, as nothing more than a background player in his life—now stepping into a world of influence, power, and wealth.

The thought is unsettling.
