Chapter 20 - 20. Whispers

Their proximity was close now. Too close. Closer than Jaewon had ever seen Taesan stand with anyone. From across the room, it felt wrong to look at, like something private he was not meant to witness. Joshua leaned in slightly as he spoke, his voice low, meant only for Taesan. Then his hand reached out and brushed Taesan's arm. It was not stiff or hesitant. Not accidental either. The touch was natural, familiar, almost habitual, like something repeated so many times it no longer required thought.

Like he belonged there. Like he had always belonged there.

Taesan did not flinch.

Did not step back.

Instead, he let out a quiet breath, slow and steady, the kind that slipped out when someone finally stopped holding themselves together.

Jaewon's heart slammed against his ribs.

It was not just jealousy. It was something heavier. Something uglier.

The sight of them standing side by side should have looked mismatched. Taesan with his soft edges and quiet manners. Joshua with his broad shoulders, sharp gaze, and commanding presence. Two completely different worlds.

And yet they fit. Effortlessly.

Like pieces that had always been meant to align. What unsettled Jaewon most was Taesan's expression. That look. He had never seen it before. Not with anyone.

Not even with him.

Taesan was looking at Joshua with open vulnerability. Quiet trust. The kind of gaze that said I feel safe with you. Jaewon swallowed hard. That had never been meant for anyone else. Especially not for someone like Joshua.

Outside, the faint glow of the streetlamp filtered through the glass, catching along Joshua's features and outlining the quiet strength in his face. The light softened him, made him look warmer than the cold night outside.

Taesan found himself staring.

The warmth in Joshua's eyes stood in stark contrast to everything Taesan had grown used to. No mockery. No hidden motives. No careful words that needed decoding.

Just steadiness. Just presence. Joshua stood beside him like an anchor. Grounding. Reliable.

Dangerously comforting.

It unsettled Taesan more than he wanted to admit.

For so long, closeness had only meant disappointment. Trust had only ended in betrayal. The one person he had once liked, once believed in without question, had taught him that lesson well.

Jaewon.

At some point, those feelings had been real.

Soft. Hopeful. Foolish.

Now they had curdled into something bitter. Not sadness. Not longing. Hatred. Clean and sharp.

Joshua was different.

Not because of the world he belonged to or the quiet power he carried, but because Taesan did not feel small around him.

Did not feel stupid.

Did not feel like he had to try so hard.

With Joshua, there was nothing to prove.

Nothing to pretend.

Conversation came easily. Soft laughter. Simple words. Silences that did not feel awkward.

It felt like learning a new language. One made of comfort instead of caution.

Joshua stepped a little closer.

The space between them thinned.

Taesan's breath caught. Not out of fear. But something warmer. Something unfamiliar.

Joshua's voice, low and near, brushed past his ear. The sound alone made Taesan's chest tighten, but in a way that felt steady. Safe.

For the first time in a long while, the tightness in his lungs eased. For the first time in months, maybe years, breathing did not feel heavy. Standing there beside Joshua, Taesan realized something quietly. He was not surviving anymore. He was finally starting to breathe.

He exhales softly, almost a surrender, and looks at Joshua again. The way Joshua stands there, calm and assured, as though this—whatever this is—is exactly what was meant to happen, makes something stir within him.

"Thank you."

"You don't need to thank me," he replies. "I'm here for you, Taesan. That's all."

Taesan nods, unable to find the right words, but feeling as though, in this moment, he doesn't need to say anything else. For the first time in what feels like an eternity, he doesn't feel the need to hide behind his usual mask of composure. The walls he's spent so many years building around himself are starting to crumble, piece by piece, and he doesn't know if he's ready for it—but somehow, he feels like he might be.

And for once, he doesn't want to pull away. He doesn't want to keep pretending. Not with Joshua. Not anymore.

The tension between Taesan and Joshua hangs heavy in the air, palpable in the quiet streets around them. It's as if the world has narrowed to just the two of them, the city lights flickering in the distance as their unspoken connection deepens with each passing second.

Joshua's eyes never leave Taesan's face, and for a moment, the bustling sounds of the city fade into oblivion. The space between them feels charged, and Taesan, despite the swirling chaos in his mind, finds himself rooted to the spot, drawn to Joshua with an intensity he can't quite name.

"I'm glad you're here."

"You're not alone, Taesan. I'm not going anywhere."

Jaewon watches from the shadows of the street corner, his heart pounding in his chest as he takes in the scene before him. He's unable to move, his body feeling a different emotion—jealousy—his breath caught in his throat. The world around him seems to disappear as he watches Taesan and Joshua, the two of them so close now, the connection between them undeniable.

Joshua leans in slightly, his hand still on Taesan's shoulder, and whispers, "Let me in, Taesan. Just this once. You don't have to be strong all the time."

Taesan's breath catches at the words, at the sincerity in Joshua's voice. There's something in that offer, a softness, a promise of something more than the power and prestige Joshua represents. Taesan feels himself drawn to it, to him. He lifts his gaze to meet Joshua's, and for a brief, suspended moment, everything feels still.

And then, with a gentleness that surprises him, Joshua closes the distance between them, his lips brushing against Taesan's in a slow, deliberate kiss.

It's not rushed or forced, but tender—a quiet exploration of what has been building between them in unspoken glances, stolen moments, and quiet confessions. Taesan's pulse races, but there's no panic, no urgency. Just the soft pressure of Joshua's lips against his, and the warmth that spreads through him like a slow, steady flame.

Jaewon's breath catches in his throat as he watches them from the shadows. His heart races, and an overwhelming wave of emotion floods through him—jealousy, betrayal, confusion. His hands ball into fists at his sides, his chest tight with a feeling he can't place.

He wants to look away, to turn and walk in the opposite direction, but he can't. He's transfixed, unable to tear his eyes from the scene before him. Every moment feels like it stretches into infinity as he watches Joshua deepen the kiss, his hand now moving to Taesan's face, cradling it gently as if to make sure he's really there.

Taesan doesn't pull away. Instead, he leans into the kiss, his hands trembling slightly as they find their place on Joshua's chest. For a brief, fleeting moment, he feels a sense of freedom, as if the weight of everything he's been carrying has lifted—like he can finally be himself without the constant pressure of the world watching.

The kiss is soft, lingering, as if they both need it, both craving something more than the lives they've built for themselves. And when they finally pull apart, their foreheads rest together, breaths mingling in the cold night air.

"Taesan," Joshua murmurs, his voice low, "you don't have to carry everything alone."

Taesan's chest tightens at the words, the weight of them settling in a way he hasn't allowed for a long time. "I know. I just… I'm not sure what to do with this."
