The Phoenix sun hit like a physical assault.
Four hours on the ground, working out of a cramped police station that smelled like burnt coffee and frustration. Local detectives were cooperative but relieved to hand the case to federal experts.
Garcia's research had produced results: one attendee of the 1987 exhibit with a criminal background. David Chen, 52, assault convictions in 1989 and 1994, released six months ago from a five-year sentence for aggravated battery.
"Address confirmed," Garcia reported through the speaker. "He's been living in his childhood home since release. It's isolated—ten acres of nothing outside city limits."
"Perfect killing ground," Morgan observed.
Chen's property was exactly as described—a ranch-style house surrounded by desert scrub, no neighbors for miles. The kind of place where screams wouldn't carry.
Morgan and Emily took point on the approach. I watched the partnership dynamics—Morgan's body language was closed, distrustful, but professional. Emily matched his pace, covered his angles, moved like someone who'd done tactical operations before.
The front door was unlocked.
Never a good sign.
"FBI! David Chen, show yourself!"
Silence. Then a crash from somewhere below.
[DANGER SENSE: ACTIVE]
[THREAT: BASEMENT LEVEL]
[FOCUS: -3]
I circled toward the back while Morgan and Emily cleared the main floor. The basement access was through a kitchen that reeked of chemicals—formaldehyde and something sweeter. Death's particular perfume.
The basement was a studio.
Professional lighting. Camera equipment. Props arranged with obsessive precision. And in the center, a woman strapped to a table, eyes wide with terror, wearing a white dress arranged to mimic Botticelli's Venus.
Chen stood over her, scalpel gleaming.
"FBI! Drop the weapon!"
He turned, face twisted with the particular rage of an artist interrupted.
"You don't understand. She has to be perfect. They all have to be perfect."
Morgan appeared at the stairs. Emily flanked right.
"Put down the scalpel, Chen. It's over."
"It's not over until it's finished!" He raised the blade toward the victim.
Emily moved.
The tackle was clean—shoulder into Chen's midsection, driving him away from the table and into a stack of props. The scalpel clattered across concrete. Morgan was on them in seconds, securing Chen's arms while Emily controlled his legs.
"Subject in custody! We need medical for the victim!"
I holstered my weapon and moved to the woman on the table, working the restraints.
"You're safe now. It's over."
Her eyes found mine—shocked, terrified, but alive.
Alive.
The arrest processed smoothly. Chen transported to federal custody. The victim taken to Phoenix General. The team gathered for debrief in the police station's conference room.
Morgan approached Emily.
Extended his hand.
"Good work in there."
She took it.
"Thanks."
"I mean it. That tackle saved her life."
"Team effort."
Morgan nodded slowly. Not friendship—but professional respect. The first crack in the wall he'd built around Elle's memory.
Reid appeared with statistics about art-themed serial killers. Emily listened with genuine interest, asked follow-up questions that made his face light up.
The team stopped at a diner before heading to the airport. Morgan's suggestion—an olive branch disguised as hunger.
Emily ordered the same burger as Hotch. His eyebrows rose—the closest thing to surprise I'd seen from him.
"Good choice," he said.
"I do my research."
Small connections forming. The ice beginning to thaw.
On the jet home, Emily caught my arm before we boarded.
"Thank you. For not treating me like an intruder."
"The BAU is about what you do, not who sent you."
She nodded. Understanding passed.
