Six weeks passed.
Cases came and went—a kidnapping ring in Oregon, a spree killer in Nevada, a cult situation in Tennessee that reminded me uncomfortably of The Prophet's compound. The work continued, relentless and necessary.
Emily integrated smoothly. Morgan's distrust became grudging respect, then something approaching partnership. Reid found her fascinating—her knowledge of art, languages, and international politics opened new conversational territory. JJ appreciated her efficiency. Garcia had adopted her as a project, determined to crack the professional shell she maintained.
I kept professional distance with moments of genuine connection. Coffee runs discussing cases. Late nights reviewing files where she asked questions I answered carefully. The slow development of trust between two people who both knew how to hide.
But underneath the surface normalcy, shadows were lengthening.
Gideon was receiving strange communications.
I noticed because noticing was what I did. The subtle tension in his shoulders when he opened certain envelopes. The way he'd disappear into his office for hours, emerging with that thousand-yard stare that meant he was seeing ghosts. Photographs I glimpsed on his desk—old cases, old victims, faces from a past he rarely discussed.

Someone was studying Gideon specifically. Not the way the Fisher King had studied the team—this was personal. Focused on one man, his history, his vulnerabilities.
Frank Breitkopf.
The name surfaced in my meta-knowledge like a shark fin breaking water. Serial killer. Artist of death. The "Jane" killings across multiple states—women murdered with precision that law enforcement couldn't pattern because Frank didn't follow patterns. He followed inspiration.
I researched through legitimate channels. FBI databases. Old case files. The scattered breadcrumbs of a predator who'd evaded capture for decades.
The files painted a picture of someone brilliant and broken. High IQ. Possible medical background. Victims chosen for aesthetic criteria no one else could see. Bodies posed with an artist's precision—each kill unique, a masterpiece unto itself.
And somehow, his path had crossed Gideon's.
The research sessions happened late at night, when the bullpen was empty and the building quiet. I'd pull files, cross-reference reports, build a picture of a monster I couldn't yet name.
Emily found me there one evening.
"Research on something?"
I closed the files.
"Just reading."
She didn't push. But her eyes said she noticed—the quick movement, the defensive posture, the obvious attempt to hide.
"Gideon's been distracted lately," she said, settling into the chair beside my desk. "Have you noticed?"
"I've noticed."
"Do you know why?"
"No." Technically true—I didn't know the specific details of Frank's communications. "But I've seen this before. Something's weighing on him."
"Something personal?"
"Something he's not sharing."
Emily was quiet for a moment.
"I'm still new. I don't know team dynamics well enough to interfere. But if there's something I should be aware of..."
"If there's something the team needs to know, Gideon will tell us."
"And if he doesn't?"
The question hung between us.
"Then we watch. We wait. We're ready when he needs us."
She accepted the answer without fully trusting it.
"Goodnight, Ethan."
"Goodnight, Emily."

[NOTE: NOTICED RESEARCH — QUESTION DEFERRED, NOT FORGOTTEN]
The next evening, I approached Gideon after hours.
His office door was open, but he sat with his back to it—unusual. The desk before him was covered with photographs I couldn't see clearly, but I recognized the posture of someone reviewing evidence of their own haunting.
"Gideon?"
He didn't turn.
"You've been distracted. If there's something happening, the team should know."
Silence stretched.
"When there's something to know," he said finally, "they'll know."
"Is it about the communications you've been receiving?"
That made him turn. Those paper-colored eyes—tired in a way I'd never seen before.
"You've noticed."
"It's my job to notice."
"It's not your job to interfere."
"I'm not interfering. I'm offering support."
Gideon studied me for a long moment.
"You see more than you should, Agent Mercer. You always have. But some things can't be shared until they're understood." He turned back to his photographs. "When I understand what's happening, I'll bring it to the team. Until then, I'd appreciate your discretion."
A dismissal.
"If you need anything—"
"I know where to find you."
I left his office with the weight of problems I couldn't solve pressing down.
Walking through the bullpen later, I noticed something new on Gideon's desk.
A photograph in a simple frame. A woman—dark hair, warm smile, captured in a moment of genuine happiness.
Sarah. His girlfriend. The woman the team barely knew existed.
My stomach tightened.
Frank's target.
In the show I remembered, Sarah had been Frank's ultimate weapon—murdered to destroy Gideon, to prove that no one he loved was safe. The death had broken something in Gideon that never healed.
Is that the timeline I'm in?
Is Sarah already in danger?
I had no way to warn Gideon without revealing how I knew. No way to protect a woman I'd never met from a killer I couldn't identify.
All I could do was watch.
Wait.
Prepare for what was coming.

The parking lot was empty except for my car and the security lights. I sat behind the wheel, staring at nothing, feeling the weight of knowledge I couldn't use.
Elle was gone—my attempt to save her had failed.
Sarah was next—and I had even less leverage to prevent her fate.
Some things can't be changed.
But I have to try.
I started the car and drove toward home, mind already building plans that would probably fail.
Because failure was better than not trying at all.
And somewhere in the darkness, Frank was watching.
Waiting.
Preparing to destroy another person I couldn't protect.
