THIRD PERSON'S POINT OF VIEW

Sera's heart hammered against her ribs as she strained to catch every word from Lucian's lips. His voice was flat, cutting-no warmth left, no trace of the man who'd held her close just hours before.

Her shoulders slumped, disbelief heavy as stone in her chest. She rolled onto her side, facing away from him, pulling the sheets tight around her body to hide the fact that she was awake, that she'd heard every brutal syllable.

"Why... Lucian?" she whispered to the empty space beside her, arms wrapped around her stomach. Her thoughts spun wild-betrayal she'd never seen coming, trust she'd built brick by brick now crumbling to dust.

The ache in her muscles from their night together didn't register. She'd been so sure they'd shared something real-a connection that went beyond the paper contract binding them. So sure he'd felt it too.
