The sound of footsteps on the mansion stairs had Ace, Kieran, and Kiddeon's attention before Lucian even came into view. Their hearing was sharp as ever-they'd know his gait anywhere, and the heavy, measured pace told them he'd left Sera upstairs.
He appeared at the bottom with his face stripped clean of warmth-the expression they'd known since their days in the organization. It wasn't fear that tightened their shoulders; it was recognition that something deep and unspoken was wrong.
"Finally showing your true colors." Ace grinned, lounging on the sofa as he swirled wine in his glass. His mismatched eyes were half-lidded, fixed straight on Lucian.
"Isn't this what you wanted to see?" Lucian shot back, sarcasm cutting through his words as he dropped onto the cushion beside him. The three of them spread across the long L-shaped sofas that filled the room.
